A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Local knowledge a must!
Played Black Bear for the first time this week.
Two things about the course.
Because it was late December the course was brown.
I never had a bad lie but the look was something I did not anticipate.
An advantage to this was the added run in the fairways
There are a number of blind shots and the greens are very undulating so; you do not want to be int the wrong place when putting.
Now that I know what to expect I look forward to playing it again.
Excellent conditions
Course was in excellent condition, green’s rolled very nicely, not too fast yet not slow either. Tee boxes were in okay conditions. Pace of play was fantastic we played at a very good pace without feeling rushed. Looking forward to going back soon.
STAY AWAY
This was my first time playing Black Bear and it disappointed. The pace of play was awful. There were 3 groups waiting on ever hole. The only good thing about this place if I can say that was that the greens were fair. The course conditions was if it was the middle of the Florida summer. Dry fairways everywhere. Course not maintained at all. I will not be back
Good challenge for any golfer
I enjoyed playing a course with a beautiful links-style layout like this. All of the workers were nice and helpful. There’s no water hazard except for the last hole, and minimal tree trouble throughout, making it less likely to frustrate most amateur players. That being said, the elevation changes are unique for a Florida course, the greens are tough targets to hit, and the bunkers are numerous, well-placed, and really difficult recovery spots. Currently the bunkers seem to be in slight repair on some holes, but relatively insignificant. The tees can cater to players at any level and the course is challenging and forces good shots without being totally demoralizing. I definitely hope to come back.
December 2022
People, people, people - do not give courses 4 and 5 stars if they are not destinantion courses! People use these rating to determine where to go. This is a moderate plus course - nice enough, but not Sawgrass or PGA. It is a decent day outside. Many of the traps are beat up, and many lies are scruffy. Greens rank average on pace and conditon. Solid three star place - which is decent.
Pete Dye course
Unigue layout for a Florida course, tee boxes need to be cut but a fun course to play.
"If you dare play Blackbear"
It has beeb a few years since I have played Blackbear, and now I understand stand why I missed playing there. If you dare to challenge your iron play, then you must take your game to this golf coures that requires sharp and accurate approache shots to those small greens. However, the challenge is when you miss landing on them that in most cases you will have to really have a short game to score because those greens have a lot of contour to them. If you dare to play Blackbear, be prepared and know that it is worth playing there. I love this game ..
Good tough course.
The course is good overall, lots of hills, bunkers, uneven lies, elevated greens, small greens (very tough).
Fairways are generous, tees are ok until you find a tree directly in your line. Greens are narrow and small, multilevel, elevated, guarded by sand and run offs.
It makes for a challenging course, you need to hit your targets or you will be penalized. Fun to play.
Great course, well kept
Black Bear is in good shape and managed well. The grill and bar are also recommended.
will come again soon
The course and weather were great. The course has it moments with you. You are almost always hitting to up hill green so make that club adjustment. There is a few greens that are narrow and can give you a fit thinking you hit a wonderful shot only to see its off the green 5 yd. But to say it again I will return.
Do not play here 🤮 Bad bad course!!!
Weeds all in the greens and cannot make one putt 🤪 Not worth one penny 🙏 Play somewhat else!!!
