There is no better course in the Richmond area
Birkdale doesnt really fall short on any aspect of their course. Its challenging, has holes that are more open, great mix of par 3/5s, and solid greens/fairways. However, Birkdale does not get my glowing review simply for their course.
It's their staff. I have golfed all over the country, and recently moved to RVA. I spent my first few months playing every course in an hour radius. When I arrived at Birkdale, I was greeted with an incredibly respectful and friendly pro-shop attendee. My first day, I met the pro, manager, and the main weekend starter. All of whom shared as much love for the sport as they did with their customers. It's the type of course where I know my interactions with staff will be friendly, the starter won't make you feel uncomfortable, and the overall atmosphere is one that other courses should look at as the gold standard.
Thank you to Reed and all of the other staff members for making my rounds incredible enjoyable. I'll be back 100 more times!

Course is not worth the $$. We were treated like intruders on their course at the club house. Had issues on the course with a group of younger players (18-21) who acted like the course was theirs on the way to a 6 hour round of golf. They would not allow faster played to play thru. Had to go around them and miss a hole. Would not play this course again even if free.
Course Decline
Ive played Birkdale semi regularly for years. It was in reasonably good shape when I last played earlier in the summer but it was in poor condition today. Greens were potmarked and poorly maintained, tee boxes were barren and fairways were rough. Only one water station on a hot day. Very disappointing to me and my partners.
Decent Value and interesting Course Design
Usually one of the cheaper options around Midlothian so I always take a peak at tee times before I book anywhere. Course conditions usually fluctuate for no apparent reason. Some years the greens are terrible, but this year seems to be a better year. If it rains, good luck trying to find a dry spot to hit your ball. Pretty poor drainage overall. Bring plenty to drink/eat, as typically you won’t see a cart coming around, even on busy days/weekends. Still, because I live so close to the course, as well as don’t have to drop $75-$125 to play a round, I keep coming back. Course design is also pretty unique, so fun to play around. If you’ve never played here, give it a try.
Good layout, rough shape
Played this course last time a few years ago. It has a good layout with a variety of holes and hazards (water, sharp doglegs, large trees strategically placed, etc). Pay attention to the yardage and play one set of tees back (ex. if you normally play the whites, play the blues here). This time it was in rough shape. The tees had a lot of weeds, the greens looked like they were not recovering from ball marks, and several holes had hard-as-rock dirt patches in the rough (mostly next to cart paths). I got a good deal through GolfNow, but I would not pay $50+ to play here the way it is now.
Fairways were in good shape but the greens were not the best. The greens had small marks with no grass and seems evident that the ball marks are not being repaired. I've seen worse at other courses but to be fair to those who are contemplating playing at Birkdale course conditions need more than a star rating and require some context.
Good course
Great course good location well maintained just don’t know on some holes what’s fair way what’s rough what’s fringe
Sliding downhill for sure
So birkdale is always known for a couple things, pace of play is always slow, that’s simply due to the amount of players usually here. The second thing is the layout, fun and challenging in my opinion.
Here’s the rub.
No Marshall. I played behind a 3 some that look, frankly sucked. Left, right, shank, chunk, etc. I waited on every single shot except the last hole because the cart guy ran them in. I was walking by myself. They knew I was waiting for them every time.
Greens were poor, lots of dead spots in the fairway.
And a cardinal sin for ANY golf course is not providing water on the course during summer months. That just should never, ever happen. There was no water and no drink cart.
The staff are always friendly, I couldn’t care less really. They can be unprofessional and the course can be amazing and you’ll forget all about them.
“Off course amenities”? What does that even mean? 🙄
Still, a fun track now and then.
Birkdale
Decent course if you are just looking to get in a round for a good price. Staff is friendly. Played around noon, and tried two different carts, both seemed like they were almost out of juice. Didnt think I could make it through 18 holes, but did. Nervous crossing streets due to carts being so slow. Had just heavily sanded the greens, and bunkers were rough. Hoping some nice weather gets it back in a little better shape.
Great course for the price!
Loved everything about Birkdale. Very friendly staff and fellow golfers. Only con was they didnt have any glizzys ready for a mid round snack but it was on a Monday so I'll give em a pass for that! Can't wait to play here again soon.
Greens are spottier than a Saharan cheetah and harder than hunter Bidens crack rocks. They need some time to recover. They also need to relearn the value of making people fix their divots then I’ll go back. Until then no thanks
Honest Review
Neighborhood course, not a fancy layout but definitely a few great holes. (Favorite holes are #4 par 3 and #9 par 5) Tee boxes, fairways, rough, greens are all in exceptional shape. Very pair pricing for what you get! I have played this course over a dozen times since moving here from Florida last year and will continue to go back.
Great course!
Great course and is definitely coming along well! Couple of bunkers on the back 9 had standing water, but that’s probably pretty normal considering the amount of rain we’ve had. Greens played great. Staff is always awesome.
