Delaware Springs Golf Course
About
Named after the springs that snake through the layout, Delaware Springs Golf Course is a scenic links-style track that is one of the better values in Texas golf. The low prices and friendly service, combined with a picturesque and challenging golf course, make this a Hill Country favorite.
Architects Dave Axland and Dan Proctor built a natural-looking course that fits the terrain perfectly. The course is nestled into the rolling hills and oak trees along the Highland Lakes, playing 6,891 yards from the tips. During your round you’ll encounter lush fairways frequently loaded with bunkers, large greens that slope severely, and numerous bump and run shots. The designers added a few original touches, such as the descriptive Scottish names for each hole (the 18th is called "Hame" for the home hole).
Another interesting design twist involved placing the signature hole as the opener. Playing 504 yards to a par 5, no. 1 is best attacked with an iron into the left side of a sloping, tree-lined fairway. The creek cuts into the landing area, making it a testy tee shot. The second shot must bend around the dogleg to the left and over the creek, and the approach is into the green shaded by large trees on the right.

Never see one on course Photo submitted by mhughesgolf on 06/13/2015
Just enough challenges for a country course.
Has it really been eight (8) years since I last played this course!? Well, it's just as I remember it. The club house is simple but certainly adequate and they have a decent grill for your dining/drinking pleasure.
I feel like this course has a higher number of senior golfers because the area has a high number of retirees ... with their own golf carts. But don't worry, they know the course and how to play it. They're likely to push you to pick up the pace instead of the other way around.
The putting green near the clubhouse has a little extra undulation in parts but that's good practice of which too many fail to take advantage. The driving range is also close by and can certainly handle getting you warmed up as needed. However, it likely maxes out around 235 yards and that's if you hit it straight to a small area. So perhaps stick to your 180 or less irons.
While this course gets a significant amount of play, the tee boxes are holding up well. Some felt a little hard ... hard to place a tee. You'll find plaques in the ground with yardage markings next to the tees so that can be helpful when you aren't looking at the scorecard, GPS, etc.
The fairways were cut well but I guess I have to blame 'winter conditions.' They're just a little hard ... lacking the softness of (growing) green grass. If you're a divot maker then this may not work well for you at this time. It's better for those who pick their balls a little cleaner. And you won't be playing out of the real rough much if at all. You'll be lucky to even find your ball in the high grass, cactus, thick brush, etc. This is the Hill Country after all. As for yardage markings, you do get sprinkler head distances. Those seem to be harder to find on so many courses I play. They don't use 150 yard poles but that's okay. I do wish they'd paint the red-white-blue-yellow stripes on the cart paths. Oh well, we can't have it all.
There is a scattering of bunkers around the course. They're well placed (in a bad way). So I found a couple. The sand was very fine and very dry but void of any rocks. So I can play those more or less.
Hole #1 is the only hole with a water hazard. It's a mossy little creek at the end of the downhill fairway that you have to carry in order to continue the par 5. I bombed a nice drive that rolled down to the flat area just a few yards short of the end of the fairway. Honestly, I'd forgotten I needed to hit a lesser club off the tee; haven't played the course in a long time. So I was thrilled with my "tee shot of the day" ... only to top the next ball into the water. Ugh. So much for having a chance to be putting for eagle.
The greens had been 'painted' around the edges but were all in really good shape. Unfortunately, the winter conditions aren't done yet so the greens felt a little harder than they might be when receiving more water. So they didn't hold the ball too well ... didn't see a single ball mark that needed fixing. And they were running fast today. That meant we played a lot of shots short on purpose and hoped for the best. And that, in the end, will certainly affect one's score. It is what it is.
Noticed large black tarps rolled up near every green on the course. It's great to see they're taking precautions during overnight freezing and/or morning frost conditions. Protecting the greens is vital since those are the most important parts of the course with respect to our game.
The course had coolers with cold water and cups on both 9's. They also had ball washers next to them. The carts did not have ball/club washers on them but did have two sand jugs and USB outlets. They also had the wider cup holders that I so prefer. And the brakes on these are nice because you just let the cart stop and don't have to engage (click) the brake. Sooooo nice in my opinion. It's the little things that make me happy sometimes. Ha!
Bring Xtra Golf Ballas
Bring lots of balls for the front nine but the back nine opens up. 1 blind hole I never find my ball due to granite,. Beautiful course. Lots of trees and deer.
Awesome course layout but won't be back.
I love the course layout. It has lots of challenging holes. Problem-- there were 4 of us playing and we started with 2 holes open in front of us. By the time we made it to the 9th hole there was one hole open in front. This we know because the ranger told us this on hole 9. Three times from hole 2 thru hole 9 the ranger came out letting us know we could speed up play. I told them each time we are playing ahead of pace. The group behind us(a member who lives on the course) kept calling complaining of our slow play. The 4 of us completed 9 holes in 1 hour and 45 minutes which included two restroom stops. When we were halfway down the 10th hole the ranger came out again. We told them we would wait on the tee box of hole 11 and let that group pass. We waited for 15 minutes for them. We let them play thru. We finished right behind them on 18. If that group wanted to play thru we would have let them, but they were never that close to us to say play thru.
Cart Included???
So I booked here, through GolfNow, with a rate of $27 per player. This rate includes a shared cart. Got to the course, and while they charged us the correct rate, they also charged us each another $12 per golfer for a cart. Not sure why the booking says the cart fee is included, yet the course doesn't honor that?? GolfNow, any ideas?
Oh and the marshal is not a very pleasant lady. Rude at times. I think she forgot this is a game we pay to play in order to have fun and relax, not a boot camp to be yelled at.

It was my first time playing this course. Course was in good condition even just after a 4 day hard freeze. A bit of a drive from where I live but value was worth it. Pace was perfect even on a busy day. Glad to see Marshall’s out I’m sure this helped pace. No cart service was the only negative but it was the day after Christmas.

A Course certainly worth the money and the Drive
The course is in good shape, and the greens are smooth and quick. I live about an hour away and it is always worth the drive. The Pro Shop crew is very friendly (and funny) and they make an awesome Breakfast taco. If you haven't played the course, You need to.

Great getaway
This is a real gem! Challenging with sloping fairways, calling for more creative drives. Tree-lined fairways require straighter drives. Greens in nice shape and rough is generous. Very friendly staff at all points. Excellent practice areas. Plan to go back!

Fantastic Greens!
My hats off to the DS greens keeper! I played this course twice in 2 weeks and the greens are in the best shape of any course I've played this year! They reveal courses that demand twice the cost.
I play about 100 rounds per year all around central Texas and I'd recommend this course over any at this time.
