Ironwood Golf Course
About
Ironwood Golf Club has the distinction of being named one of Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." Owned by the city of Gainesville, this popular course hosts more than 50 tournaments year. The course winds through a scenic landscape covered with century-old pines and sparkling lakes. Don't be surprised if you're joined by the wildlife that calls the course home, which includes deer and wild turkeys. The layout will keep you guessing with interesting twists and turns. The elevated greens have dramatic drops from front to back, making them a challenge to read. There are strategically placed bunkers throughout Ironwood Golf Club, as well as thick rough along the fairways. The obstacles combined with some tricky doglegs will make you think twice about swinging the driver too freely. Strategy, not strength, is the key to doing well on this course.

Sandy Slow Greens and Splotchy Fariways
I golfed this course a month ago, and came back again today with 3 other friends from Jacksonville, thinking the conditions might get better with a month of maintenance--it wasn't better. It's difficult to describe how bad the greens are, which were little more than sandy patches of dirt with intermingled grass sprouts that provided no consistent roll (sometimes fast, sometimes slow). The lack of maintenance extends further to the driving range, where the mats are seemingly 20 years old and there no way to tee up a ball for driving. There was no food in the clubhouse. There was no cart girl on the course for refreshments. And we had several 'single' players jump in front of us on the back nine after the turn and slow the course down. One of the golfers was blatantly playing two balls, and we were waiting for him to track down his balls. We brought the issue up with the ranger, who apparently knew the offender and justified "oh, he's just playing a two-some buy himself". The the ranger not only didn't enforce the pace of play, but actively endorsed the two-ball play as 'okay by him'. All in our foursome concurred that we will never make the hour-long drive from Jacksonville to play here.
We only were given three hours for 18 hole from tee off until an afternoon tournament started after playing behind a five some of kids with rentals clubs. Didn’t make it and had to quit early.
Good course for the money
Pleasantly surprised by the course. Visiting for Gator baseball game.
Greens are bad
They need to fix their greens. Some are shaggy, some are cut better, most have bare spots and duck grass.
Ironwood Experience
For the deal that I was able to get for my tee time, you really couldn’t beat it. The course conditions aren’t 100%, but they have definitely shown improvement since their recent struggles this past summer. I enjoy my time at Ironwood and I will certainly be playing here again.
Greens are pure dirt
No grass on greens on back 9. We were not told this prior to play. Way overpriced for course condition.
Dump, embarrassing
Play this course on saturday. I played a lot of courses around the United States and I am telling you this corse is in the worst shape I have ever seen. We could only get through nine before we decided to go home. The greens were so bad that the crab grass and the dirt took over. There are no greens. You are trying to put on dirt, crab grass and weeds. They pace of play was not enforced and every hole we waited at least 10 minutes. This place should be closed and for 50$ I just have to laugh. Who ever is managing this corse needs to be fired. It should be called the Dump.
Worst greens ever
The fact that this course charges a greens fee is ridiculous considering there is not 1 playable green on the whole course. Every single green has more sand than actual green with tons of weeds and dead spots. The sand bunkers are hard as a rock. The course is a joke
It just doesn’t have a budget
The greens are literally all sand and some of them don’t have holes for flags to stick in. The grass is dead and the people that golfed in front of me had no golf etiquette to let me play through when I was behind them for 9 holes. I couldn’t putt on the greens and half of the grass is just dirt.
Terrible Experience
The course was by far the worst I have ever played on. The “greens” on the back nine were completely sand and had no grass on them whatsoever. I rented a set of women’s clubs for $15, and the bag had a lefty iron, and no wedges. Very poor experience and definitely would not come back.
Greens
Most of the greens on the back nine are half sod, half dirt.
