Ironwood Golf Course
About
Ironwood Golf Club has the distinction of being named one of Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." Owned by the city of Gainesville, this popular course hosts more than 50 tournaments year. The course winds through a scenic landscape covered with century-old pines and sparkling lakes. Don't be surprised if you're joined by the wildlife that calls the course home, which includes deer and wild turkeys. The layout will keep you guessing with interesting twists and turns. The elevated greens have dramatic drops from front to back, making them a challenge to read. There are strategically placed bunkers throughout Ironwood Golf Club, as well as thick rough along the fairways. The obstacles combined with some tricky doglegs will make you think twice about swinging the driver too freely. Strategy, not strength, is the key to doing well on this course.

Good deal, good course, good day.
The course was just reopened after a six month upgrade. Fairways were in great shape. The greens were fast and smooth. The rough was trouble if you landed in it but that is to be expected. Old trees are gone new markers were up and golf carts were brand new. Club house was clean and the bathrooms were remodeled. The rest room on the front nine has been moved to the back nine on 15. The driving range now has a sheltered area for driving with matts. I enjoyed my game and would recommend this course to any one.
New fairways are perfect.Tee boxes great. Greens a bit shaggy/slow. Only complaint would be condition of the rough. Very thick fescue and if you miss fairway by a couple feet you couldn’t even find your ball.
Crazy Rough
Ironwood overall was in great shape with one exception, the rough. So thick and tall you could not find a ball if you threw it 2 feet in front of you. The fairways, greens and bunkers were fine.
If the rough was mowed lower there would be a lot quicker play. As it is now anything off the fairways costs easly 5 minutes to find, if you are lucky.
We're coming back, but not until the situation with the rough is resolved.
Course is being reseeded not good to play now maybe in the future
All of the fairways were just essentially sand. Never would have booked if I knew the course was in such poor condition
BEWARE... terrible. Just terrible.
I cannot describe to you how terrible this course is right now. I would not play there for free, and the course conditions are NOT disclosed by the GolfNow site. I have never left a bad course review but I wish someone had before I played there. There is no warning on the GolfNow site as to the course conditions... usually when greens are being aerated or something like that, there's a course alert... nothing here but there needs to be.
Here's what's going on... they are (per the starter and folks in the Pro Shop) "killing off" the fairways and planning to replace them on May 1st. I'm attaching pictures so you know what these "fairways" currently look like. Don't bother looking at the nice stock picture for the golf course. That's not what you're getting. You're getting the pictures I uploaded.
These pictures are from the middle of the 9th fairway, and all fairways on the front 9 are just like this one. Another picture is from a tee box. Greens are marginal and passable, typical municipal course and ok. Tee boxes mostly poor but that's not too big a deal. But there are no fairways... only dirt, interspersed with some brown patches of dead grass here and there. Depending on how far we were from the green, we resorted to sticking a tee in the ground in the fairway or just putting. I just can't overstate how bad the fairways are and how useless the time will be that you spend on this course. We left after 9 and should've left sooner. And I'm not some little princess here... I've played some bad courses. But I've never played one like this. Again, everyone was nice... but the product was just terrible.
Layout is interesting enough, and the people at the course are all very nice. The course may be fantastic in a month. But if you have any intention of hitting any fairways during your round, wait until the fairways are replaced in May.
Nice Municipal Course
Very busy course but well run and things moved along nicely.Nice greens but farways a little sparse in places. Narrow in spots and lots of sand and water....can play tough in a breeze.....nice course
Fun little course
Great for the money. They are preparing to redo all the fairways but the greens are decent and challenging. All in all.... it's a great value and a fun track.
Kind of a cool and breezy day
I've been wanting to play this course for awhile, and decided to go for it even though it was 50 miles from my house.
Have to tell you it was well worth the drive as the course was in good shape with nice fairways and quick greens. Most greens were elevated and undulating which made for some fun putts.
The course was really busy, but the pace of play wasn't bad for a Florida course during the snowbird season. Our round worked out to about 3 hours 45 minutes.
Would we go back and play this course again, yes indeed we will.
ranger needed at times
Jeff is doing great things, staff was great. greens a little bumpy, but very playable.
Nice layout
The course was in good shape. A good golf course for a average player to play on
this course has great features
Excellent conditions, fast greens, challenging holes with some water, and lots of woods.
course maintenance not too good.
The Greens are kept well for a public course. However the practice facilities, the chipping green and the driving range are not kept up well. The center of the driving range tee box needs to be dug up and replaced. They know this. They are not doing it. It has needed this for about 5 or more years, and Gainesville city will not spend about 8K$ on it to get it done. Also the chipping facility is never mown short like the putting green, so you cannot really get good practice on it. Also, the areas around the practice putting green and the chipping green need to be airiated and fertilized on much more of regular basis....2-3 times per years. The sand practice area needs to be dug up completely and rebuilt with much better drainage. I hope they go ahead with their tentative plans to do all this next year.....as they planned this year, but did not follow through. thanks for the opportunity to review.
Other than this, I love the course, the people and even the clientele. Good people!!!
long course helps with that part of your game. The par 3's are fun
always a pleasure to play this corse
