Ironwood Golf Course
About
Ironwood Golf Club has the distinction of being named one of Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." Owned by the city of Gainesville, this popular course hosts more than 50 tournaments year. The course winds through a scenic landscape covered with century-old pines and sparkling lakes. Don't be surprised if you're joined by the wildlife that calls the course home, which includes deer and wild turkeys. The layout will keep you guessing with interesting twists and turns. The elevated greens have dramatic drops from front to back, making them a challenge to read. There are strategically placed bunkers throughout Ironwood Golf Club, as well as thick rough along the fairways. The obstacles combined with some tricky doglegs will make you think twice about swinging the driver too freely. Strategy, not strength, is the key to doing well on this course.

Kind of a cool and breezy day
I've been wanting to play this course for awhile, and decided to go for it even though it was 50 miles from my house.
Have to tell you it was well worth the drive as the course was in good shape with nice fairways and quick greens. Most greens were elevated and undulating which made for some fun putts.
The course was really busy, but the pace of play wasn't bad for a Florida course during the snowbird season. Our round worked out to about 3 hours 45 minutes.
Would we go back and play this course again, yes indeed we will.
ranger needed at times
Jeff is doing great things, staff was great. greens a little bumpy, but very playable.
Nice layout
The course was in good shape. A good golf course for a average player to play on
this course has great features
Excellent conditions, fast greens, challenging holes with some water, and lots of woods.
course maintenance not too good.
The Greens are kept well for a public course. However the practice facilities, the chipping green and the driving range are not kept up well. The center of the driving range tee box needs to be dug up and replaced. They know this. They are not doing it. It has needed this for about 5 or more years, and Gainesville city will not spend about 8K$ on it to get it done. Also the chipping facility is never mown short like the putting green, so you cannot really get good practice on it. Also, the areas around the practice putting green and the chipping green need to be airiated and fertilized on much more of regular basis....2-3 times per years. The sand practice area needs to be dug up completely and rebuilt with much better drainage. I hope they go ahead with their tentative plans to do all this next year.....as they planned this year, but did not follow through. thanks for the opportunity to review.
Other than this, I love the course, the people and even the clientele. Good people!!!
long course helps with that part of your game. The par 3's are fun
always a pleasure to play this corse
Great layout and challenging greens
Course is short on some par 4s but it makes you think and either play driver with risks or play a long iron for better approach.
Some good sand and water features keep you on your toes
Staff is very friendly and helpful
Great value
Ironwood Golf, looking forward to my next round there.
First time I played there, a friend has played there with the Gator's senior league and recommended it as a challenging layout. I really liked this course. When ever you play at a new course, your a bit handicapped with the distances, this course is a challenge to read! Some of the par 5s have creeks that run across, too lay-up or go for it was a tough call! Now that I've played it, I can't wait for my next round there. The draft beer was ice cold, nice finish to a great round of golf at Ironwood. Paid $12. bucks plus tax per person on Golfnow.com!!!!
A bit narrow, so bring extra balls!
I've played Ironwood many times and can say that you get what you pay for. This is a challenging layout, but the greens and fairways are a bit rough. If you're willing to lift and place while you're in the fairway, you shouldn't have much of a problem getting in a nice round.
Ironwood Gainesville FL
Played Ironwood Friday and had a great time. Fairways and greens are not in as good of shape as I have seen them in the past. Course was not too crowded. Staff is always friendly. I definitely recommend Ironwood, especially at the price at got at Golfnow ($22).
Very Enjoyable
This course is challenging depending on the level of the golfer with tees to accommodate most any golfer.
...I really like the layout of the course. So, I guess the layout and the staff inside and outside make the visit to Ironwood very enjoyable.
Nice course
This is a nice course. Can be challenging. The greens were not in the greatest condition. They are usually much better. Will play here again. Hope they attend to the greens.
Don't Bother
I must say, I see this course with 3.5 stars and I'm baffled. First the good. The layout is one of the best I've played in a long time. Water on a number of holes, but not too difficult to avoid. Good doglegs, some fairways narrower and tree lined, some more wide open. Some tough traps. I guess I would call it an "interesting" layout. Not just cookie cutter up and back holes. The greens and sand traps are actually pretty good, so no problem there.
The Bad.-- The problem with this course, is that the fairways are ATROCIOUS and the "rough" is just as bad. I'm no expert on florida grass for fairways, but I do know that decent and better courses overseed with an annual rye to compensate for the summer grass going dormant. Ironwood either doesn't overseed or tries to get by with a minimum of seed which is far less than they need. It is impossible to find a even a one foot section of fairway that isn't either dead, dying or dirt. The "rough" is more dirt than grass. GOLF IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED ON GRASS THAT IS ALIVE AND GROWING. Now, maybe the course is better in the summer and fall, but they should just close it in the winter.
Descent course
The grounds were
In great shape. When I played in the morning it was very cold so the first couple holes,
Putting surface like Velcro but it soon warmed up and then they rolled quick. Grounds staff immensely friendly,
But the young
Lady Erin who works the bar/counter was the opposite, making me wait, not acknowledging customers standing waiting for food or drink or something from the pro shop. Ridiculous! Otherwise the experience was great and you should play here if you are in the area.
solid muni
greens roll nice, fairways spotty, beverage cart girl was pretty and freindly, wht more could you want.
Great hot deal value
Played for $17 (with fees), wouldn't pay a dollar more though. Good value for the time of year and versus $40 at bostick. Will definitely be playing here more often but only if I can get hot deal discount.
What a steal for $11
You cant beat the Hotdeal Tee Times for this quality of course in this Area. I paid $11.00 for 18
Good layout, good greens, fun game
I had a wonderful afternoon at Ironwood. Pretty good price for a great round. Pretty good greens, too.
Great value
Course is very well maintained and in good condition. Great course for not playing in a while
