Ironwood Golf Course
About
Ironwood Golf Club has the distinction of being named one of Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." Owned by the city of Gainesville, this popular course hosts more than 50 tournaments year. The course winds through a scenic landscape covered with century-old pines and sparkling lakes. Don't be surprised if you're joined by the wildlife that calls the course home, which includes deer and wild turkeys. The layout will keep you guessing with interesting twists and turns. The elevated greens have dramatic drops from front to back, making them a challenge to read. There are strategically placed bunkers throughout Ironwood Golf Club, as well as thick rough along the fairways. The obstacles combined with some tricky doglegs will make you think twice about swinging the driver too freely. Strategy, not strength, is the key to doing well on this course.

Good public course
Nice practice range, very personable staff, course in pretty good shape, some narrow fairways are a challenge for those who spray the ball (like me).
Excellent staff
The staff is great and the course is in good shape for a public course. It's challenging with tight fairways and rolling greens. Driving range is great. Wish I could take the driving range mats to the course!
UAB vs. Gators
Great value for the money. Fairways are tight in places, but rough was not overly penal. Beware #1 if you have never been here. Greens were moderately fast and rolled true.
Ironwood has grass and real rough
Ironwood reopened last month and I have played it three times. The good news is the course has grass and is in better shape than it has been in many years. The bad news is the pace of play is very slow and I never saw any effort by staff to address the problem group. If you are lucky enough to get a tee time either very early or when the course is empty and get the golfnow.com “Hot deal” you will likely appreciate the city of Gainesville’s willingness to financially support this muni golf course.
Nice Course
Grass in the rough hides your ball until you are right on top of it. Otherwise course is in great shape.
An awesome day on an awesome course
This was my first time playing Ironwood, and the work done on it has left it in really good shape. The tee boxes are just about perfect, and the greens are in really good shape as well. The fairways are in good shape, but the rough is really fuzzy and caused me to loose over a dozen balls for the 18 holes. The golf carts are new and the driving range is probably the best in Gainesville ... although to be honest the matts are really too close together, and it would be impossible for people to actually use all the matts as they are laid out. The putting green and chipping green is also very nice. I will also say, that the sand traps have real sand in them, and so it is possible to blast out without breaking your wrist on hard clay. It was pretty busy today, and there was a group in front that was slow, and a weasel behind me who kept pummeling me with balls ... that kind of spoiled an otherwise awesome day.
Unplayable rough
Could be a nice course but the rough is impossible. This is a muni course for amateurs not the U.S. Open. If you are 5 inches off the fairway you can loose your ball. Also will make pace of play ridiculously slow on a busy day.
Upgrade
First time playing since the restoration. The course was in good condition. However, I don't see much difference of the fairways since they did them over.
Good deal, good course, good day.
The course was just reopened after a six month upgrade. Fairways were in great shape. The greens were fast and smooth. The rough was trouble if you landed in it but that is to be expected. Old trees are gone new markers were up and golf carts were brand new. Club house was clean and the bathrooms were remodeled. The rest room on the front nine has been moved to the back nine on 15. The driving range now has a sheltered area for driving with matts. I enjoyed my game and would recommend this course to any one.
New fairways are perfect.Tee boxes great. Greens a bit shaggy/slow. Only complaint would be condition of the rough. Very thick fescue and if you miss fairway by a couple feet you couldn’t even find your ball.
Crazy Rough
Ironwood overall was in great shape with one exception, the rough. So thick and tall you could not find a ball if you threw it 2 feet in front of you. The fairways, greens and bunkers were fine.
If the rough was mowed lower there would be a lot quicker play. As it is now anything off the fairways costs easly 5 minutes to find, if you are lucky.
We're coming back, but not until the situation with the rough is resolved.
Course is being reseeded not good to play now maybe in the future
All of the fairways were just essentially sand. Never would have booked if I knew the course was in such poor condition
BEWARE... terrible. Just terrible.
I cannot describe to you how terrible this course is right now. I would not play there for free, and the course conditions are NOT disclosed by the GolfNow site. I have never left a bad course review but I wish someone had before I played there. There is no warning on the GolfNow site as to the course conditions... usually when greens are being aerated or something like that, there's a course alert... nothing here but there needs to be.
Here's what's going on... they are (per the starter and folks in the Pro Shop) "killing off" the fairways and planning to replace them on May 1st. I'm attaching pictures so you know what these "fairways" currently look like. Don't bother looking at the nice stock picture for the golf course. That's not what you're getting. You're getting the pictures I uploaded.
These pictures are from the middle of the 9th fairway, and all fairways on the front 9 are just like this one. Another picture is from a tee box. Greens are marginal and passable, typical municipal course and ok. Tee boxes mostly poor but that's not too big a deal. But there are no fairways... only dirt, interspersed with some brown patches of dead grass here and there. Depending on how far we were from the green, we resorted to sticking a tee in the ground in the fairway or just putting. I just can't overstate how bad the fairways are and how useless the time will be that you spend on this course. We left after 9 and should've left sooner. And I'm not some little princess here... I've played some bad courses. But I've never played one like this. Again, everyone was nice... but the product was just terrible.
Layout is interesting enough, and the people at the course are all very nice. The course may be fantastic in a month. But if you have any intention of hitting any fairways during your round, wait until the fairways are replaced in May.
Nice Municipal Course
Very busy course but well run and things moved along nicely.Nice greens but farways a little sparse in places. Narrow in spots and lots of sand and water....can play tough in a breeze.....nice course
Fun little course
Great for the money. They are preparing to redo all the fairways but the greens are decent and challenging. All in all.... it's a great value and a fun track.
