Canmore Golf Club in Dunfermline was built in 1897 and has been at its present site since 1902. In 1914, the nine-hole course became 18, although play on the back nine was limited as most of it was given up during World War I. The golf course had a second run from 1921 until 1941, when World War II intervened. In 1946, after a redesign, the course was given back to Canmore Golf Club, and, with the exception of a few small changes, the layout remains the same today.

One of the changes has been the addition of more trees, which have created a more defined layout. The par-67 golf course is comprised of five par 3s and 13 par 4s, with nary a par 5 in sight. Don't mistake the lack of a cinco as some nod to economical layout, it's more like stingy ratings. There are a few long par 4s, like the 430-yard 17th, nicknamed "Sandwich." The fairway here slopes steeply from left to right, with bunkers on the right and trees on the left.

Canmore Golf Club's signature hole is the 11th, "Quarry," a 374-yard par 4. Your second shot after the drive is blind, 30 feet down to a green surrounded on two sides by steep embankments and an out of bounds. There's also two bunkers and a burn to spice things up. The 11th hole is in the middle of a particularly tough stretch on Canmore that doesn't get much easier. The 10th has an out of bounds running along the left side, and the 12th, a par 3, features a tee shot over a big gorge full of trees. The 13th, another par 3, features more out of bounds to the left of the green. Make it out of this stretch with your sanity and a decent score, and you might be in for a good day.

Canmore Golf Club is open to visitors from Sunday to Friday from March to October and Sunday to Saturday from November to February. Catering and full bar service are available. Also, party bookings are welcomed on all weekdays and selected Sundays throughout the year.

Cranmore GC

Really enjoy visiting Canmore and enjoyed the course which was in good condition for December, the greens were decent and the fairways were wide reducing the chances of losing a ball or two. Would like to come back in the summer to see the difference in shots required compared to winter. Decent bacon roll before the round and lovely soup at the end. For less than £10 a round through Golf Now it's a no brainer to book this course

Good round of golf

We booked through golfnow and we were paired with two strangers but we all got on. The course was in good nick considering the dry weather. No par 5's but was still a good test. Two holes to highlight first the 8th which required a good carry with your drive so for golfers who don't hit the ball long it might be a problem. The 11th what can I say. One to remember. There are some parts of the course which causes bunching up. Our 4 were not particularly slow but one of the members came over to tell us to speed up which was unnecessary. All in all a good day out in the sunshine and we will definitely be back next year.

Was much better than expected

Having read some previous reviews it's taken a year to make up my mind to go.

My son and I attended last week and was greatly impressed with all aspects of a day out the only slight negative being behind a foursome of old guys who were very nice and helpful and understandably a little slow but this in no way would put us off returning.

From the Pro to the kitchen staff I would give 10/10 for our day out, we will return for sure.

Canmore

Fairways in good condition, greens recently top dressed so there were a lot of winter greens which we were unaware of when booking. Fairway mats were required as well which wasn’t stated at booking. One hole was not in play which involved hitting 2 balls at the next hole - no mention made of this on the pro shop so we had to rely on some other players explaining what we were meant to do.

I’ve played the course before and enjoyed it but this was a poorer experience although staff are friendly and it’s a good parkland course. Would return but probably not in the winter. Better communication before booking and when checking in would make a difference.

Fortunate change

Originally booked in a pitreavie but when I got there all 18 holes were winter greens. So on phone to golfnow and got the money credited to my account and jumped up to Canmore instead. The pro here fitted me in earlier even on a very busy day as the change in location had given me a much later tee off time. Thank him for that. Also, have a computer layout of the course on the screen in the shop where he ran me through hole number 11 before I set out as it is a hole I'd never came across before.

I must say it was a good change of location. Course was in fantastic condition. Greens were perfect, fairways cut to a nice length and semi rough wasn't to thick either. Tees were perfect and flat. Really couldn't fault the condition of the course at all.

Had a roll in the clubhouse before hand while I waited on my tee off time and the ladies that served me were very pleasant and helpful.
