After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Golfer Reviews
Historic Muni That Still Has Life
As a New Yorker, I really adore this course. The history of it being the oldest public course in the US is so cool. Also as a baseball fan, knowing I’m playing a course the likes of Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, and Jackie Robinson all used to play is just icing on the cake.
The new management has really stepped it up too in terms of the maintenance and conditioning of the course. Really just makes it a treat to play on any given weekend. Just make sure to book an early tee time to avoid pace of play issues but other than that, it’s a blast to have this in the city.
Quiet Friday night oasis
Sparse players so able to get further than expected on the twilight rates. Staff was great in pointing out a few of the hidden women’s tees. Would play again!
Van Cortlandt park Golf Course, Bronx, NYC
Have played this course many time before . Conditions and services are getting slowly for the worst.
Frustration at the start
I cannot believe that this course is allowed to have such poorly executed systems for starting golfers.
We were sent out as a twosome initially and then told half way down the fairway that we needed play with the twosome ahead of us and that their single had to play alone. And then when we were on the second hole we were yelled at for not playing with the people in front of us who were no where to be seen. This went on for 3 holes with multiple interruptions while we were playing which obviously impacted our mental status for golf is a difficult game to begin with. This was unacceptable and shows incompetence and lack of customer support for people who booked their time ahead of schedule. Also the greens had not been mowed down so it felt like a 1970’s golf course with how slow the greens were rolling.
1000 times over, recommend!
You can feel the golf history in the air as soon as you pull up. The head pro is a real stand up guy, the course is absolutely beautiful and pristine. 10:10 recommend, phenomenal price too!
Old reliable
As the oldest public Golf Course in the United States, it’s wonderful that Van Cortlandt Park is still a going concern. Its easy access to Manhattan makes it a real plus for the golf-deprived residents of that borough. It’s also a great layout and, during the week, the pace of play is usually reasonable. Sadly, on weekends, like all of the city’s public courses, it gets overbooked and a round just takes way too long. The course is in pretty good shape, though the tee boxes are pretty rough and the greens kind of slow. But all in all, it’s a great buy.
