Guy who opens shop decides to shows up at 6:50 am on weekend
You play this game long enough, you run into badly managed courses. Since Dyker beach gets so much play, the place is basically a cash cow so they don't give too much about unhappy customers. From having shot gun outings on weekends with no warning or flyers to the sleepyhead guy working the pro shop who decides to show up just before 7:00 am, this place is what it is.
windy day on da links
great course in nice shape...staff was pleasant enough and pace of play was tolerable...would definitely come back
Good value, decent course
Pretty good value for the money - $40 for 18. Dyker is a solid old-school parkland layout. It's quite short, but there are still some good and challenging shots to be made. The greens were in really excellent shape - firm, quick and shockingly true given the amount of play it gets. Some of the greens have some real character and complexity that the quickness brought out beautifully. They must have a new greenskeeper who really knows what he is doing. If they would just fix up a few of the tee boxes, this course would be a borderline hidden gem.
Separately, it's a super-easy walk and have nice views of the bridge and Poly Prep campus.
Good for Brooklyn
Nice course in Brooklyn! When in Brooklyn do as the Brooklynites.
Best location to play golf in NYC
Being one of the most played course, the conditions are surprisingly as good as it usually is. Course is located in a awesome neighborhood of Bensonhurst so people playing this course are the most part friendly. Layout is relatively flat, fairways are wide and overall course is short. A big hitter would definitely eat this course up for lunch. I play this course frequently because of location and super deals they give out. Usually the two for Tuesday deals.
$$$$$
The best deal in NYC !!! The course is always on good shape.
A GREAT TIME AT DYKER BEACH GOLF COURSE
WHEN YOU PLAY GOLF AT DYKER YOU FEEL THAT YOUR IN THE COUNTRY NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF NYC. THE 18 HOLES OFFER PARS RANGING FROM THREE TO FIVE AND THE COURSE IS PERFECT FOR BOTH THE SEASONED AND BEGINNER GOLFER.THE STAFF IS VERY FRIENDLY , KNOWLEDGEABLE AND ACCOMODATING. PEOPLE WHO ARRIVE BY CAR HAVE NO PROBLEM PARKING AS THERE IS A HUGE PARKING LOT. PEOPLE DRIVE TO DYKER FROM SUFFOLK AND WESTCHESTER COUNTIES AND FROM NEW JERSEY.I HAVE PLAYED GOLF WITH BOTH THE YOUNG AND OLD AT DYKER AS WELL AS AN OCCASIONAL TOURIST FROM EUROPE. I RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE PLAY A ROUND AT DYKER AS IT IS REALLY A :GEM OF A GOLF COURSE.
Slow
Everything about it was slow. Slow start. We started 40 minutes after our reserved tee time. Slow pace of play. Waited about 5 minutes every hole. Slow greens. Greens were terribly slow. Needed to hit with full swings to go 12 feet. Ball would slow down going down a hill.
Go somewhere else
Be sure to call the course before you play and ask about aeration schedule. They don't tell you and don't discount you at all for poor course conditions as the better courses do. They also put as many players as humanly possible, no staggered tee times, all they want is money. Expect a very long day.
Brooklyn golf
Most poorly run course anywhere. Five to six hour rounds are the norm, and golfers can expect the course to be running 45 minutes to 90 minutes behind in tee times. They often allow 5-somes, golfers without clubs. and marshal's are scarce.
The course is OK, but beat up by too much use, and you will be aggravated for sure if you survive 18 holes.
This course has changed for the better!
The last time I played this course was over ten years ago. Plenty has changed for the better. It's great to see the Clubhouse being used for various enterprises, new restaurant, quaint Pro Shop, and other facilities. Friendly staff, challenging but slow greens which you'll get used to after a few holes, a very nice Academy Training Center. I brought a friend in from Chicago who requested playing golf within the city limits, and he was pleasantly surprised, and pleased with the conditions. My friend never felt like he was on a New York City course with so much greenery, and barely signs of the outside other than sirens, and a few horns blowing. Played Monday morning and the round was just over 4 hours, but moving. I would recommend this course to a friend.
SUCH A SHAME
I live in Brooklyn but will not subject myself to this torture again. Played on 7/26/15 and walked off the course after playing 12 holes in 4 1/2 hours. The marshals have no idea how to keep groups moving, and the starter is buddies with most of the regulars so don't be surprised if a foursome gets slipped in front of you at the last minute. Do yourself a favor and travel the extra hour to find a course other than Dyker. Your golf experience will be much better any place else but here. It's really too bad because this place could be so much better if managed properly.
If you want to enjoy a nice round of golf go somewhere else.
I highly recommend Dyker Beach Golf Club
I was in Brooklyn for only the weekend, and decided to try Dyker Beach Golf Course for the first time. It was truly well worth it. Good value, friendly staff, and the course was in excellent condition.
Good course
Very good course for a city track. Greens rolled well. Lines were kept. Fairways are cut and well kept. Only down side is that nobody fixes ball marks anymore. Rule of golf : urs plus one.
Awful
If you are looking for an expensive, 6 hour round on a poorly maintained course, then you will want to play here. Otherwise, its a complete waste of time and money. It is an absolute struggle to get through a round everytime i play here and usually end up walking off after 6 hours whether i have complete 18 holes or not. No management anywhere on the course to keep things moving. Really brutal.
Good Course, but could be better managed.
We reserved our time online and it seemed like there were plenty of t-time's available. However, when we turned up there was a long wait to register and eventually to tee-off. Likely b'cos they overbooked. Additionally, our cart broke down on hole 13 and they did not issue us any credit or refund.
Course it self is nice and fun to play, but improving the logistics, reservations and coordination could greatly improve the experience and flow. It's not that hard to do, just needs someone with the right level of experience and planning to coordinate.
Uncoordinated
I got there early thinking I would practice but this course does NOT have a driving range. They have a small putting range across the street but the putting holes just had bumpers, not actual holes which may not be a big deal to most but if you have ever putted where the ball rolls along the rim just to change direction and miss the hole you know the practicing with an actual hole is more important than just getting a "feel" of the green speed. The worst part was that I had paid for a booked a time through Golfnow but when I got to the course they claimed my time was 45 minutes later because they claim that Golfnow book wrong times. I say, if you know this happens you should contact Golfnow and fix the issue or if you're not competent enough to fix it then stop offering times on Golfnow. The starter was very discordant and was causing errors for so many people to start that everyone was delayed at the front and back 9 and groups got mixed up because of it. The fairways were in good shape but the greens were all ulcerated and just poorly maintained. Overall, I say it's OK if you live near by and can walk there but definitely NOT worth the price or travel for what you get.
Beverages
It would be nice to have been able to buy a beer or two during the round.
aerated greens and fairway maintenance spoiled our round
dyker beach is well known for been backed up ,the course is ok ,on this occasion all the greens were aerated and all had sand on them ,plus they were doing 9 and 10 fairways with the tractor with spikes so there was no chance of your drive going anyway ,very disappointing , it would have been nice to know in advance so i could have avoided playing for a few weeks until the greens settle in
