Heatherwood Golf Club
About
Heatherwood Golf Club is the sister course to the Pine Hills Country Club, which is a 30-minute drive away in Manorville. It is a short golf course at a little over 4,000 yards but the layout offers excellent short game practice. It is also a good test of your iron play. There are no par 5s but the golf course has an interesting variety of reachable par 4s and challenging par 3s. Mature trees are abundant throughout the course, specifically concentrated along the fairways. One of the most unique holes is the 11th, which features an optical illusion that causes players to line up in a way that makes their balls go to the right. The trick is to adjust your stance slightly left but even if you are still off the green is mercifully large and forgiving.

Nice Course with slow play.
The course was in good condition, but don't try to play it around 12pm or you will wait on every hole. It had very slow play.
Well maintained
4 1/2 hrs is too long on a short course. No ranger to move people along. Waited at every hole. Players not told to keep up with pace.
Even new golfers can go to the ball and hit. I'd never play this course on a weekend. Too bad - it's a nice course overall...
Good choice
For the money this course gives best bang for the buck. A short course which allows you to get through a round pretty quickly. A few challenging holes to test your game. Great course for beginners!
The course is very hilly.
The course is in very good condition. The terrain is hilly which makes it difficult if walking.
Short course
It's a great course to practice your short game. A couple of tough holes & greens. Needs to grow in the rough but fun to play & it only took 3 hours.
Too slow
The starter has no concept of a tee time. If courses would stick to tee times then there wouldn't be all the backup. Waited on every single hole. Not worth playing.
never again
Went golfing with my son. Tee boxes were lacking grass at most of the teeing off areas, especially by blue markers. Play was a bit slow, no ranger to move people along. Even bad players can move at a decent pace. That was not really the problem. The main problem were degenerate types playing in t-shirts and jeans yelling and cursing at one another. Eventually the profanity had a stereo effect when another group a couple of holes away started cursing at the original dirtbags from across the course. Just what you like to experience on a Sunday afternoon during father and son quality time. That was not all, the foursome two groups behind ours were continually hitting into the group behind us. Knowingly and without care mind you. So outside of the profanity I was awaiting a golf course brawl behind us. Partially waiting to help the group behind us to physically remind the offending party of proper golf course ediquette. I would not go back there if it was free and it is a shame because I had been going there for about 15 years and it had usually been a pleasant experience.
A course that serves its purpose
Heatherwood is an "executive course" that delivers what it promises. At par 60, it is a good place to sharpen your skills. With a decent mixture of a few par 4's and plenty of par 3's, you get to use most clubs in your bag. Par 4's , though not long, require a driver for most players. par 3's vary in length enough that you may use anything from a 3 iron to a wedge.
It is hard to judge a course's condition in December as being typical. Puddles here and there, some chewed up tee boxes and rough almost as short as fairways, doesn't mean that this is a year round condition. The greens were smooth and true and the fairways were well maintained. Leaves gone eased frustration about lost balls, so I would say that overall the course can be fun at this time of year.
The only real problem is that holes are not clearly marked. You have to look at the tee box the see the hole number and distance on a 2 foot high by 6 inch wide marker with hand painted numbers. Other than that the noise from the highway can be annoying to some.
One sight that surprised me was a child maybe about 4 with 2 men allowed to ride around the course. I think a little diligent oversight is called for here.
Overall, if you want to sharpen your game and spend far less than 4 hours doing so, I would recommend the course given its slight shortcomings.
Good beginner cost and worth the value
This course is not the hardest and is not for you golf club golfer, but it is a very good pitch and putt course.
great place to fine tune your irons
great short course, well kept and some very intresting and challenging holes
Excellent par 60 course
Lot of fun to play, especially if you didn't feel like battling any par 5's. Course was in very nice shape, with excellent true greens. Will be anxious to play there again.
A great course to work on irons and short game. Well maintained!
I always enjoy playing at heatherwood . They absolutely have the best maintenance crew on Long Island. Fairways and greens are perfect. Staff is always super friendly and helpful. Especially the starter/ranger with the white hair. He always goes "above and beyond" to provide a great golfing experience.. And there is always a free drink waiting for you at TJ Halpins after your round. What a nice touch!
Lovely course, great value
I wanted to play a course I hadn't played before for my birthday, and this was a nice opportunity. The course is relatively well maintained, certainly better than I would have expected for the price. It's a lot hillier than I would have guessed, but the cart included in the deal takes care of that. It's a bit of a tale of two nines at Heatherwood. For most of the front nine, there are roads and houses close to the holes (though generally not in play for the right handed slicer). The back nine plays much more secluded and quiet. The course itself is relatively straightforward; there are a few doglegs on the par 4s to keep them challenging, and most greens are heavily defended by bunkers. If I could nitpick two downsides, it would be that the greens had a number of divot marks. In Heatherwood's defense, it was fairly late in the season, and they were otherwise fine, if slow. The other complaint is that pace of play was glacial, but that was in large part due to the twosome I was paired with playing very slowly (Rant: reading a double bogey putt from three angles is excessive, especially on every hole). Those quibbles aside, it's a lovely change of pace of a golf course, and very laid back. And last, but by no means least, the round came with a free drink at the bar after playing! I don't know if this is a standard practice or I stumbled onto a promotion (I don't see it listed anywhere), but it makes an already fantastic value even better. 18 holes with cart and a Sam Adams pint for about $16 all told on the weekend is impossible to beat on Long Island. I very much look forward to returning.
cant beat the price when you consider the free beer they give ya
great during the week course, because its short, its full of amature's and play is painfully slow on the weekends. the par 60 makes it a fast round, which is great as an after work thing. unobstucted greens, and wide open play make it a great teaching course. the greens and fairways are always in great shape. the clubhouse bar is great, great food and every round includes a free drink or beer afterward. . well worth the price tag for a round.
nice course
playing on sunday afternoon was a little slow,as expected.greens were spectacularly plush and rolled true.new sand in many bunkers.well maintained fairways.great round.
Starter
I have never met a starter more friendly and engaged than the gentleman who was on duty Tuesday. It was a gret beginning to a super day of golf.
Great course to sharpen your short game. Beginner's choice.
Short course, walk this course it's not very hilly. I'm an avid golfer while my son just started. We found Heatherwood a great course to bond. The par 3's move slower so it's nice to catch up on life between holes.
great time
Excellent course and great value. Executive course but challenging.
Well maintained, good value.
The course was very well maintained, the staff was friendly, the greens were amazingly nice for a public course. The pace of play was slow for an executive course, but the course was very busy on the Saturday that I played. Maybe a ranger would have been helpful in preventing some golfers from playing more than one ball on several holes on this busy day. All in all, a great bargain for a public course.
Good value, but pace of play/spacing is too slow.
Heatherwood is a good quality course and reasonably priced. However, the pace of play is far too slow. The course is only 4,000 yards long and it took me close to 6 hours to get around on a Saturday afternoon. I played the next day, Sunday, and it took me close to 4 hours to get through 13...I walked off the course at that point. Part of the problem is player etiquette and efficiency. I would never begrudge anyone for playing poorly or coming out to learn the game (we were all there at some point), but does not excuse etiquette and awareness of pace of play issues. However, most of the blame goes to the course. There is zero spacing between groupings, no one polices pace of play and the course does not do anything to make sure less experienced players are aware of golf etiquette and how to get around the course efficiently. For example, some basic rules/principles could be posted in each of the golf carts. I understand the course is looking to make money, but they will lose long-time, more experienced golfers like myself who rely on Heatherwood to give a local golfing option. It is an "executive" course, and the pace of play does not reflect that. It often takes me less time to get around a 6,500 yard course on a weekend.
