For golfers looking for a great Maui experience, your destination is The Dunes at Maui Lani.

Golf's most respected journalists agree: The Dunes is a must-play. Golf magazine named it among the top 35 best new golf courses in America, while Golf Digest called it one of the five "Best Kept Secret Golf Courses in America."

Designed by Robin Nelson, The Dunes at Maui Lani is immaculately maintained and brilliantly laid out. It is a tribute to the great links courses of Ireland that more than one golf writer has described as a "British Open course on Maui." Stunning dunes dot the terrain at every corner, challenging the golfer at every hole.

In addition to 18 holes of championship golf, The Dunes offers the only lighted practice range in central Maui, with grass tees, fairway and green-side bunkers and a pitching and putting green, plus an air-conditioned pavilion. Also, when not on the golf course, golfers can enjoy a four-star meal at Cafe O'Lei at The Dunes.

Good Challenge, Great Location

The Dunes is not a flat and easy course. The layout is not long by measurement. The wind is in play all around this course. The conditions were great. For as much play as the course accommodates, it keeps up nicely. The greens are in great shape all around. They roll true as well. Pace of play was slow just because of the volume of players but still very enjoyable. The Dunes team were very nice, friendly & attentive. Prices were also very affordable considering it’s a nice course on Maui.

Ok if they know You

Reception by the starter crew really deserves an F. When I arrived I was able to park right by the load out area. I walked by the starter crew who were sitting around and only helping what appeared to be certain people they knew. No one asked or acknowledged me. This was on a Thursday so it was not that busy.

So I went in to pay and when I came out, one of the guys sitting down ask me when my tee time was and when I told him he said, oh you're too early you can have that cart over there. The cart was an old gas cart, no cooler and the brake mechanism was funky when you set it. So I drove it to my car and loaded my golf bag myself. The other carts had a cooler and were electric I think.

As time passed I saw the starter guys run, drive and hurry to get other golfers bag and put them on a cart for them. It appeared they catered heavly to the locals or people who appeared to be well off. I didn't come in tshirt and shorts. I was wearing Nike Golf attire and I'm a 14 hdcp so I know how to dress for playing golf.

I was able to get a cooler after I asked a person in the proshop if they had any coolers for the crappy white carts too.

The restaurant does not have a quick grab in go golfer process. It is a sit down restaurant only and they are heavy on reservations. The pro shop had old sandwiches and No Beer. So you are completely dependant on the cart girl who we only saw once and their 3 water stations were completely empty of water. This was between 12.30-4.30pm.

The course greens and fairways saved this from being a 1 star.

The course has an ok size pro shop, maybe 20x15. No men's golf shoes. The range is fairly large but the grass you hit off is pretty rough. It had a nice large putting and chipping green. Of what I could find they did not have a separate putting green.

I will not be going back because in the climate here you need water. And since they don't allow you to bring coolers on the course I'll spend my money where they take care of Everbody and not just certain people.

Great course

Great course which will not brake your bank like some other resort courses at Maui. Greens were a bit slower from what I’m used to, but that just added more fun to a play. Course is challenging and staff is super friendly! Will be back for sure!

Challenging course

I enjoyed playing The Dunes as it is a challenging course. Great elevation changes with some narrow fairways and some bunker protected greens.

Our pace of play of 4:15 hous was good considering a busy Labor day Monday.

My only complaints are hard, crusty sand traps and dry tee boxes.

Overall Experience

I thought the overall condition of the course was good. The pace of play was good, although there was a mix of twosomes mix in with my foursome which might have been a little slow for them.

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.

I would certainly play the course again.

Fun challenging course

Very impressed. Lots of challenges… probably more challenging than Wailea Gold and half the price but the views aren’t quite as nice.

Nats ruin a wonderful day

The course was a blast until the 16th hole, when we were invaded by NATS ….they covered us & it was not fun to finish when you’re covered by these bugs.

They were everywhere ….very nice course & staff

they close at 6!!

their closing time is at 6 in the winter and 6:30 in the summer, they are strict about that weather the sun is out or not they don't care, they will chase you and kick you out at 6:25.

we didn't know that, we paid good money to pay full 18 holes, but got kicked out at hole 12.

not a pleasant experience, golfnow.com DID NOT POST THIS NOTICE anywhere in the descriptions.

Great conditions, pure greens, fast play

Had a great time on this challenging layout course! Early tee time of 6:50am we played in just under 4 hours with foursome. Greens were rolling very true and overall in excellent condition. Highly recommend this course, great value especially compared to the other resort style courses. Staff was super friendly, will definitely be back. .
