The Dunes At Maui Lani Golf Course
About
For golfers looking for a great Maui experience, your destination is The Dunes at Maui Lani.
Golf's most respected journalists agree: The Dunes is a must-play. Golf magazine named it among the top 35 best new golf courses in America, while Golf Digest called it one of the five "Best Kept Secret Golf Courses in America."
Designed by Robin Nelson, The Dunes at Maui Lani is immaculately maintained and brilliantly laid out. It is a tribute to the great links courses of Ireland that more than one golf writer has described as a "British Open course on Maui." Stunning dunes dot the terrain at every corner, challenging the golfer at every hole.
In addition to 18 holes of championship golf, The Dunes offers the only lighted practice range in central Maui, with grass tees, fairway and green-side bunkers and a pitching and putting green, plus an air-conditioned pavilion. Also, when not on the golf course, golfers can enjoy a four-star meal at Cafe O'Lei at The Dunes.

Save your money
Played this course on March 17 on the Friday deal of $78 bucks. The course is not in good shape. Fairways look beaten up and about half the greens are in terrible shape. A couple should be considered unplayable . In my opinion pay more and go somewhere else. According to one staff member the greens have been like this for almost 3 years.
Interesting course: too expensive for the conditions.
This course offers an interesting and challenging layout. In fact, the last 3 or 4 holes will really make it hard to finish low! The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the clubhouse has an excellent restaurant. However, the conditions when we played were poor. The fairways were average, but many of the greens were in bad shape. Normally I would have expected to see reduced prices offered with those conditions. Still a better price than the more expensive courses, but they need to fix the greens.
Dunes Maui lani
The course is OK but the greens are in bad shape
Many greens have large dead spots some are 90 % brown. Fairways are green and we'll maintained
This course needs some help!
Top notch staff here! The golf course needs a lot of work. We didn't find any help for first time player from the score card ( hole layout ). The hole signs were so faded out that you couldn't read then for guidance. The fairways were in good shape, but the greens were the worst I've ever played. Something infected them and they were bare for most of the green or really bumpy and beat up. The sand traps were thin and hard. Beautiful views and very challenging.
Incredible day on the links!
Do not pass up this course. It was by FAR the best course we played on Maui. We didn't play Kapalua or the $200+ courses, in fact we got a "hot deal" from Golfnow.com and we're going again tomorrow!! If I could have given the staff more than a 5* rating I would have. Im sorry I didnt get the name of the guy who got our cart, explained the layout and generally welcomed us like we were family. I hope he's working tomorrow and I'll repost with his name because that guy needs a raise! We are beginner+ golfers and this course was amazing....rolling fairways, lots and lots of sand but I need practice on that. Just a great place to enjoy an afternoon of golf!!!!
what a shame
pao annua grass has taken over the greens.
my favorate maui course is in for big trouble. the greens are unputtable. big bumps of pao annua are all over the greens. can't putt around them...can't hold line over them. the only thing they can do is let them totally take over then they would be ok.
but i will not play there till they totally take over or are killed off.
Enjoyable layout
This was our 2nd time playing maui Lani and we really like the layout. The course was in pretty good condition, some of the greens had been sanded and it was like putting on oatmeal but for the most part it was a nice experience. My wife loved it because the red tees were a huge advantage, at some holes close to 150 to 200 yards closer than the white.
Good value
Fair price for course conditions. Greens in very poor condition
Enjoyable golf
Great layout, good variety of holes. Quick pace in the afternoon.
Good course but in poor condition
It's a shame the way they let this course go. Tees, fairways and GREENS had weeds growing in them. The bunkers only get raked after someone plays out of them, not raked daily. It's a nice track, just needs to be maintained.
The lady in the pro shop wasn't very friendly but everyone else was, especially the starter and bag handlers.
Need to play more than once.
We had good time but need to come back to repeat the course to get more out of it. I remembered some holes and played better than the last time. Most played well for my game, wind was havoc on long drives. Greens were okay shape but we're not lush green. Similar to city courses in California.
Great links course, great price in Hawaii
This is a tougher links style course in a convenient location, just a few miles from the airport. The course offers extremely scenic views of the mountains, and close ups of many Hawaiian animals. This course offers a challenge for advanced players and well placed tee boxes for beginners. A must play when visiting Hawaii.
Decent for price, not ideal Hawaiian golf
Course was nothing special. Greens overall in poor shape compared to what I'm used to in Atlanta, but the course was similar to most average courses in the southeast. For $60 bucks, I'd much rather play somewhere nicer and double the price than spend a day in Maui playing this course for $60. The staff were very polite and nice, food was totally fine, but the course was simply nothing special. Don't expect ocean views or anything more than an average golf course. If you're on a really tight budget, it's adequate, but if you're willing to spend a little more and play elsewhere, that would be much more enjoyable.
Still better than your best day of work
I played absolutely horrible. I try to get to any course i play, at least a half hour before my tee time. I like to hit balls, putt and chip around, warm up and let loose of any anxiety i may have. I arrived 35 minutes before my tee time and before i knew it, i was standing on the first tee, trying to loosen up after a 25 min. drive. My swing is fickle so i use the warm up time to try and dial it in. Mind you, i let the starter bump me ahead of my time. I wont let that happen again, ever.
The windy conditions and first time seeing this course, never allowed me to relax. The course was beautiful, with some scenic views and a bell on the 12th hole fairway. You ring the bell after your approach shot to let others on the tee box it is safe for them to hit. Pretty cool. Lots of undulations, fitting for a dunes course, the greens were firm but slow and there seemed to be a lot lot of sand as if they had just aerated. So even if i saw a break, the sand kept the ball straight and according to the starters, there isnt any definite breaks on the greens (toward ocean or mountains), so it is guess and hit. There also seemed to be patches of what looked like crab grass on the greens.
The water jugs on the course were far and few in between, and when we did find one, they were empty. We couldnt believe it! Yes, the tradewinds were blowing and keeping the temps mild, however, it was still warm and humid, with no water to fill our water bottles. A huge minus in my book.
When i return to maui, would i play this course again? It would have to take them paying ME to play. I played 2 other courses inside of a week and i would def play those others before coming back to Maui Lani. My money and time are too important for me to give a course "another" chance. First impressions, first impressions, first impressions...
Bargain from golfnow
Good rate from Golfnow- links style fun! Windy days are more challenging- back seemed easier and course appears longer than it is! Overall good experience and fun-
Very nice Course for the money
Played in the afternoon, and the conditions were fantastic. The staff were very helpful, and friendly. This is not a $250 dollar per round type of Course so don't expect it. For someone who plays the better than average public courses, you will be impressed. Anyone who is used to a silver spoon and people pampering them, stay away. The course was in great shape, and there are some very challenging holes. Very well designed hole layout, and scenic vistas. This would be a good place to work on your long and short games. We will definitely be back.
Overall
Challenging for men, friendly to women who's tees are set up much closer to the greens, as they should be for women.
Pro shop and cart personnel are extremely polite, as always.
Been playing this course since it opened in 1999, but not lately, due to other interests.
distracting views
I had a great round on a fantastic course! Don't forget your camera there are many spectacular views. Many exciting slopes uphill or downhill. Not many side hills. Winds were strong as expected but on those drives going with the wind expect another 30 yrds. Greens were excellent. Bunkers could use a little more new sand.
