Colvend Golf Club

You all know, those of you who rely on reviews to pick and choose where you go.....that occasionally, if you play this game long enough you end up finding a jewel in the crown that you wish to pass onto your fellow nutcases that play and love this absurd pastime.

My buddy and I recently organised a trip up to Dumfries and Galloway, on advice we booked Southerness (and were suitably impressed), Powfoot (good test) and we then chose Colvend as our 3rd course as it gave us something different to the links nature of the other 2.

We arrived for our tee off time of 11.00am a little early and were met by a wee Scottish lassie named Wilma, she was super pleasant, had our cards and course planners together and our buggy all fired up and ready to go (more of that later!!). The course is relatively short at just over 5,000 yards and wouldn’t normally be a course we would have considered but so glad we did. It is a delightful mix of shortish par 4’s, tricky par 3’s and the occasional test of straight hitting....we played it whilst the ground was still fiery from the recent hot weather which lent another dimension, but loved every minute, we are so looking forward to playing again under somewhat more normal conditions. So, that should be enough shouldn’t it? No, when you throw in that when we came in Wilma served us drinks in the bar and made us a snack while explaining that the club is run by volunteers, people who love the game and give of their time to make sure that we golfers have that great experience, artisan in its purest form. All this while sitting outside watching other players finish off on the really tricky 18th in gorgeous sunshine..perfect!!)... So, regardless of whether you want somewhere quirky but a real golfers paradise for your society or like us you were just looking for that hidden gem with your mates, play and support this wonderful example of pure golf where everyone we met was just delightful.

Just as a matter of interest, it is rather hilly in places, so if you are a little seasoned, infirm in any way, or just lazy like us 2.!!!...get a buggy, they have plenty so take advantage.

This course was hilly and I would recommend a buggy. I have played here in the past and the course condition has definitely improved and there are a number of challenging holes. Overall we enjoyed it and would recommend. The clubhouse lacked any catering facilities when we arrived midday and was a disappointment.

Enjoyed our day at Colvend. A nice variety of interesting holes, well laid out. The rain had come down heavy the night before but there were no sign of flooding on the course. Staff were friendly and helpful. My playing partner lost her head cover on the course and a member found it and it’s being posted back to her (lives over 100 miles away). A very nice touch

Looking up the 1st tee we opted for a buggy and thought omg . What we had in feint of us was just amazing , what a course layout superb the undulating greens where 1st class . You defiantly need to plot your way around this course . The back 9 more of a test longer with water hazards but still the scenery around was stunning . Will defiantly be back and highly recommended. Oh the young lady behind the bar very helpful plenty of advice before we went out , thanks again see you soon hopefully

We really enjoyed playing this course. The layout is interesting and varied with spectacular views. It is a fair and fun test of your game and course management.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Colvend G C.

and certainly hope to play the course again when we return to the area.

I organise a golf trip with friends every year. Colvend is now on the radar for future trips.

We booked this course on Golfnow for what now seems a ridiculously good for value amount. We also booked two buggies which are definitely needed unless you are very young and fit as the 1st hole is a huge climb and is not alone. We were greeted by helpful and friendly staff and given help and advice and a course planner as it was our first visit. The couse varies from short, quirky holes to longer, testing ones and the greens were slick and in superb condition. We would recommend this course to anyone visiting the area.

Brilliant wee short course but shouldn’t be underestimated by the yardage as can be quite tight and tricky in places then you throw in the elevation changes.

Great veiws out to the solway and then the inland hills.

Course was in great condition for time of year and everyone we met at the course was very polite and welcoming. Value for money £ to £ tough to beat.

Throughly enjoyed and will return in the summer.

This was a great golf course to visit. Very steep first hole and then beautiful views from other parts. Some unusual holes, including greens next to ruins, and one that sits between two ponds. Would highly recommend it as it has so much character and challenging also. Very nice and friendly staff also.

Touring in the area and booked in to play a couple of days before - what a great find! Very friendly members chatted with us in the car park as we pulled in with our motorhome and friendly greeting and sign in with Andy. The first fairway is up quite a slope but the views from the next few holes were fantastic! The course was well maintained and fun to play and we had a thoroughly enjoyable day, despite the erratic golf! We finished our round with a drink in the sunshine. Will definitely play again when next this way..

Tee time 2.30 pm we had the the coarse to ourselves 18 holes in 3 hrs some varied and interesting holes excellent value for money

Definitely a course of 2 halves. The outward walh, presumably the original 9 holes, are quirky and challenging, the first climbing straight up the hill, then you work your way back down through the bracken and gorse. Then you cross the road onto the newer half which are slightly more parkland in style, and whilst enjoyable, not quite as much fun. We had the course to ourselves and so whizzed round. Some of the greens were a bit patchy but overall it was in good nick. Overall very enjoyable and had a lovely piece of cake afterwards

Played this course as part of a 4 day break and we weren't disappointed. Once we saw the 1st hole we decided to take a buggy and were so glad we did as its quite hilly. The views are amazing, the layout is good with some very quirky holes which makes you have to think your way round. Not a course for the big hitters who like to hit long straight drives but if you don't enjoy this course then you're playing the wrong sport. The only disappointment was the greens as they weren't the best but it didn't detract from our game. We had the course to ourselves as we played the day after a competition so I reckoned the members were still recovering! Would gladly come back and play again and definitely with a buggy
