Stranraer Golf Club
Stranraer Golf Club, located in southwest Scotland on the shores of Loch Ryan, is set on gently undulating ground. The parkland course affords exceptional views over the loch to Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran and beyond.
Holes to look out for include three par-4s: the third, fifth and 11th holes. On the 403-yard third, a winding burn is crossed three times to reach a green set between a large bunker on the left and a steep bank sloping toward the burn on the right. The 382-yard fifth starts from an elevated tee down to a tight, sloping fairway set between a densely gorsed embankment and two inviting fairway bunkers. No. 11, at 382 yards, requires a demanding tee shot, with trees and out of bounds on the left, then a steep rise to a very fast green.
Stranraer Golf Club was designed in 1950 by the distinguished golf course architect James Braid. It was the last course he designed before he died in 1950.

I stood on every tee and thought this is a nice looking hole. Every hole was different and a good challenge
Very friendly club
Despite storm Francis just passing through the day before the course was in excellent condition with great drainage. Pro kindly let us move our tee forward a day to avoid Francis. Overall, from the warm welcome we received on arrival to the course and every member we came across it was a real pleasure to play here again after almost 20years.
The signature 5th hole is superb and worth the visit on its own, 2 long par 4’s on 16 and 17 make for a tough finish. Greens were good and true, fairways excellent as was the overall condition.
We won’t be waiting another 20years till our next visit.
An excellent course. We had a really enjoyable round on a very picturesque and well kept course. We had to leave immediately after our round so thanks to the starter/ secretary for his friendliness and helpfulness. We didn’t use the club house. Golf tips - bunkers are GUR.during Covid. The two monster par 4s on 16 and 17 are killers at the end of a round !
Beautiful Braid course
Stranraer is a lovely course especially in warm calm weather when we played it. The greens and fairways are in excellent condition and the views superb.
Great course and in great condition. My only issue was pace of play. The group two in front had lost 2/3 holes by the time they reached 4th hole and for most of the round we were sat waiting to hit every shot.
You may not rely on the weather, but I feel you will be able to rely on a warm welcome and a course in beautiful condition. Greens fantastic as were the fairways. Will try to pick a better day next time. There will definitely be a next time.
A diamond of a course
I’ve played this course a few times over the years, I’m always surprised at how well the course is presented, particularly the greens which are as good as any I’ve played.
I was down staying at a near by caravan site and wanted to escape for a few rounds of golf, the day before I played stranraer I played another local course and it didn’t come close to this course. On arrival the car park was really busy I had to wait for a space as there was a competition on. After getting organised there is a clear sign for the starter box, the staff are really helpful and friendly, I managed to get on a bit early however as stated above there was a competition on so I was stuck in between a 3 and a 4 ball but no big deal as I was in no rush, and this helped me find my way around the course and enjoy the stunning views of cairnryan and the seas. When I played the course it was extremely tough the winds were strong, I was hitting a good drive and a 5 iron and still make making some greens due to the wind but overall really enjoyable. During my round club members would speak to me and were really friendly I was asked if I wanted to join a group and I was out myself but decided not to. Over all a stunning course with tricky conditions, the highlight is the 5th tee it is stunning, if anyone is in the area give this course a visit the value for money is unbeatable.
Gem of a course
