Stranraer Golf Club
About
Stranraer Golf Club, located in southwest Scotland on the shores of Loch Ryan, is set on gently undulating ground. The parkland course affords exceptional views over the loch to Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran and beyond.
Holes to look out for include three par-4s: the third, fifth and 11th holes. On the 403-yard third, a winding burn is crossed three times to reach a green set between a large bunker on the left and a steep bank sloping toward the burn on the right. The 382-yard fifth starts from an elevated tee down to a tight, sloping fairway set between a densely gorsed embankment and two inviting fairway bunkers. No. 11, at 382 yards, requires a demanding tee shot, with trees and out of bounds on the left, then a steep rise to a very fast green.
Stranraer Golf Club was designed in 1950 by the distinguished golf course architect James Braid. It was the last course he designed before he died in 1950.

Memory lane
I returned to Stranraer/Cairn Ryan for the first time in over 40 years.
Enjoyed being paired up with a couple and finding out it is a small world by way of connections.
The course was in great nick, the layout was brilliant and the views were spectacular.
Course was in fantastic condition from tee to green.
October half term holiday round
Unfortunately holes 2 & 3 were closed with a shortened hole 3 played instead, shame as holes 2 and 3 looked great holes. The secretary/starter made this very clear before we played and his welcome was very warm. This course is a little gem and although winter golf was in place, the views were lovely, the course considering the time of year and recent rain was in good condition would certainly play it again anytime of year. Great value with golf now booking thank you.
Well worth a try
Stranraer has some really good holes and is always well presented. The layout of the two nines is slightly unusual with some distance between them but the scenery is lovely throughout. There are a few slopes to be dealt with but looking down hole 5 from on high is a treat.
Tidy course. Great views,
Tidy course with a some great views. Course flows very nicely. There is not one hole we did not like.
Fantastic views
Challenging course in great condition, lovely clubhouse with upstairs lounge overlooking course.
Fantastic scenery around loch Ryan.
Well laid out course interesting holes greens in great condition with challenging undulations. We have played several times and it is always enjoyable.
Stranraer golf course
Outstanding course. Value for money.. ill definitely be back soon
Made to feel cheap
I was excited to play stranraer but had a dreadful welcome by the guy in office. I booked a hot deal on golfnow and was made to feel very cheap when I booked in on the day. Not sure hot deals are welcome at these struggling courses. This course is definitely not worth £45. Covid has stuffed round rates way too high and i think courses will struggle to attract non-member players at these rates.
On a different note the chef upstairs who served me breakfast was welcoming polite and very pleasant.
As we're the players on the course.
Lovely 18 holes
Played twice while on holiday on the peninsula in August and loved it. Used their discounted slots at 11:30 and good value at £30 although would have paid the full fee if required.
Course was reasonably quite so easy stroll round, tight off a few tees and left 3 balls in the bushes on both occasions. Very dry due to the amazing weather but course condition was very good. Just to say, the condition of the greens was amazing, nice and quick and true, very fast downhill, terrific.
Fantastic course
First time playing the course and we really enjoyed it! Was quite a windy day but still a great course to play. Some fantastic views out to the sea and beyond. Course itself was in very good condition and the greens were superb. Friendly staff in the office and lounge, food was good too. Definitely play it again.
The course was in Excellent condition
Everything was great apart from the horrendous slow play. I understood there was a competition ahead of me, but to take over 5 hours to get round on not the longest or hardest course is just ridiculous. The annoying part was there were plenty of holes free of players and not many of the four balls were keeping a eye on the other guys shots so more wasted time looking for balls!
Amazing place to play golf
The course is in tremendous condition and provided a great test as always. The hospitality and friendliness of the staff and patrons is second to none. For the last few years our annual trip to Scotland and our obligatory round at Stranraer is the highlight of my golfing calendar and it is the only course we play religiously each year. This is by far my most favourite place to play golf. Oh, and the full Scottish breakfast is highly recommended too!
Great Welcome and hospitality
The course was in good condition and the welcome by all the staff was excellent and extremely professional at all times. The food and drink offering was great quality and good value for money
What a surprise
We had a 4 ball returning from Turnberry. I was recommended Stranraer as hidden gem and it didn’t disappoint. Not too long but technical enough to give a wide range of handicaps a test. Fantastic views and a friendly reception made it a great day. Highly recommended.
Day out At Braids Last
We had a most enjoyable day out on this “ Braw Course” one of Braids last. The breakfast and rolls were terrific. The course was very well presented for a pre season round. Would love to return to play when the season has started. Great Golf Experience.
The course was being well prepared for the season coming. Put this course on your to play list. Davidjr
