Leven Links Golf Course

About
Golf has been played at Leven Links Golf Course since 1846, making it one of the oldest clubs in the world. It has a unique landscape of parallel dune ridges that provides the ideal setting for links golf. The slopes and undulations of the terrain are used throughout the golf course, including the fairways that were molded from the valleys created by the dunes. The prevailing winds that blow through the course are often another challenging factor that is added to the game. The first four holes, all par 4s, play long but as the holes continue they become more up-and-down. The golf course opens with a tricky hole where the green sits on a ridge plateau and it finishes with what some have boasted is one of the best finishing holes in the country. It is another difficult par 4 with a burn stretching across the front of the green.

Leven
Love the course but has gone down a little since we last played, mainly the fairways....probably down to a dry summer to be fair.
Classic links golf
Great seaside links course with views of the ocean on many holes. We played in a 25mph+ wind that made it tremendously challenging. Course was in good shape with fast greens. The staff was friendly but the course is very hard to follow for a first time visitor due to quirky layout so ask for a rundown before heading out.
Disappointed
Very friendly welcome from both the pro and the catering staff. The course had been recommended to us and as an open qualifier we had high expectations. Sadly we ended up rather disappointed. The course generally was a bit scruffy with untidy tee areas and numerous bare patches. However, the greens were immaculate. We found the layout a bit repetitive, probably due to the course being contained in a fairly “compact” area with tees and greens in dangerously close proximity. It was reasonable value for money but I don’t expect a return visit.
Played in Championship Tour
Played the course of yellow markers for this event.
Fairways and rough had suffered a bit due to the weather we have "enjoyed" of late, but the greens were in excellent condition. A good pace and very true. (The 3x3putts I had were all my own fault!).
Day started off a bit wet, but sun soon came out. Tight course off some tees, well placed bunkering and evil gorse! - Cost me at the last. Like a lot of Scottish course I play, I disagree totally with having a different par for the course of white and of yellow. No need for it, especially when there is only a handful of yards of difference. Make it a par 4 or a par 5. Simple!
Lovely old course, and look forward to playing it again sometime in the future. :)
Disappointed
Was recommended this course by golfers who recently played in a n open at my home club.
Booked to play through teeofftimes at a cost of £25 per person rather than the course green fee for visitors of £70 per person.
Arrived to a lukewarm greeting in the pro shop with no information or advice offered. Only option was yellow tees!! Which per pitched as far forward as possible (ahead of the blues).
Our ratings as follows:
Practice facilities 1/5 - very poor
Tee Boxes 0/5 - lost all need rebuilt
Course fairways 1/5 - a disaster
Greens 2/5 - nice speed but very bumpy
Weather 4/5
Leven Thistle Clubhouse 4/5
Would not recommend nor return! Played as a pair 8 and 4 handicaps.
Very poor for the price being paid
This was my 3rd time returning to leven links and had fond memories of playing the course, sadly though it seems to have gone severely downhill, first of all it appear the club have sent tee times for online bookings that put you out right behind a senior competition where it's all four balls so the pace of play is never going to be ideal however there is a sign on the Pro shop wall stating faster playing groups should be let through by the time we reached the 4th 1 of the group's had lost a hole but no wave through occurred and by the 9th tee there was a complete log jam with an almost empty 10th hole clearly the club policy if allowing faster groups to play through was not being enforced, just feel to give an online booking website times right behind a club competition is just silly, and unfortunately I have to mention the condition of the course which sadly for a championship links seems to have gone into something almost bordering into a state of disrepair, the recent hot weather has understandably made conditions tricky for greenkeepers but to charge almost full price for a course in that of kind condition was quite shocking, is advertised as an open qualifying venue clearly to justify the price but cannot see it ever returning with the condition it's currently in, as I had good memories of leven in the past I was extremely disappointed with the day would recommend elsewhere if wanting a value for money experience
good links course
played following recent dry spell and course was playing fast and hard. as I am not a particular big hitter was fun watching a drive bounce an extra 40 -50 yards down the fairway leaving some of shorter par fours a wedge onto the green. having played courses where landing on the green almost means two putts max the size and speed of the greens were the biggest challenge of the day, sadly had four 3 putts. great challenge and real enjoyable course.
All round great experience.
This afternoon 3/8/18 at 14 /30, I had @ very good experience at Leven links. From the very friendly starter to the 3 gents who kindly let me join them on the 1st tee. The course was very brown in places (due to the recent very warm weather). But the well watered greens were great to putt on . I would recommend this course to anyone.
A good tradition links layout provided a very enjoyable day for me and my son. Course was in good condition and the staff at the clubhouse and the pro shop were friendly and helpful. Would recommend this course to visitors looking for a great seaside links experience.

Glad you both enjoyed your round and we hope to see you again soon
Challenging
The course is in very dry condition not surprisingly given the recent extended dry spell. Greens a bit bumpy and the course is extremely challenging. Starters Office staff very welcoming and well stocked. Nice lunch in the Leven club house.

Hope you enjoyed your round and we look forward to seeing you again
Helpful and Friendly Staff in the Pro Shop
I popped in 2 days before my tee time to make sure I knew where to go and learn a little bit about the course. Young Finley was a delight to chat with. Scotland has been enjoying an unprecedented hot streak with little rain and the course was suffering a bit from lack of water. But it did not deter my enjoyment of the course.

Glad you enjoyed your game, hopefully see you again soon
Greens require attention
This is a wonderful classic links layout but has suffered badly from the recent dry weather. The greens are in serious trouble and need urgent action.

Thanks for your comments. We take all comments on board and will pass to greens staff
Hard and dry
The Course killed my game. If you play it for the first time you have a lot of blind shots . The greens are fast.
The staff in the Pro-Shop was friendly and we get a warm welcome.
Testing links
The course was mostly brown after a long dry spell and although not that long, proved difficult. It was not easy to pick a line off the tee and I was not accustomed to aiming at undulating brown grassland, with no obvious fairways. There were also a number of blind shots, which are a problem for a first-timer. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the challenge of an excellent links course.
Excellent Links Golf Course
Have wanted to play for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. Loved the layout and the challenge especially the 18th

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the course and hopefully we'll see you back soon
Fantastic day at Leven Links
I wanted to play at some less touristy, but authentic links courses while in Scotland. I played Leven Links first and wasn't disappointed. From the warm & friendly welcome of Eric Walker (club professional) and assistant pro (Liam Duncan) to the outstanding quality of this links course I could not have asked or hoped for more. Leven Links was challenging, interesting, ultimately playable and just simply fun. Leven Links was just what I was looking for. L The course is easily accessible if you are in Fife. It lies along the Firth of Forth and has stunning views of the beach and coast. The greens were firm, fast and played true with lots of undulations for a test. The fairways were excellent, rumpled but fair, with just enough bumps to lead to some heart-stopping moments when a poor shot was headed toward one of the many pot bunkers.
All in all I could not have had a better, more authentic round of golf. I normally would not return to a course to play another round, especially with so many great courses so close by. Leven Links was so much fun, I went back for a 2nd round. If you are in Fife, don't skip Leven Links, You will be rewarded with an outstanding links golf course that will leave you wanting more.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the course so much that you came back. Hopefully we'll see you again soon
Nice course
Played on a Tuesday morning in a two ball and was nearly four hours to play a shortened course!!!
We were informed by the two ball directly in front of us (locals) who walked off at the ninth that it was members causing this slow play.
Positives were that the weather was good and the course was in good condition and the greens were very good.
Slow play put a downer on what was a good visit.
Winter Greens but a beautiful day?
A gutting day as the weather was spectacular for December. A beautiful day, barely a cloud in the sky and very little wind but the most frustrating part was although it wasn’t really cold, only 16 holes were open and all were on winter greens. I get there would’ve been frost in the early morning but by mid morning it must have been gone. Lady in the shop was awesome and the folk in the Leven Society Clubhouse were great, made us feel very welcome. Just such a shame we couldn’t enjoy the course as it’s a great course but staff levels obviously aren’t there to turn things around when the weather changes, which is often in Scotland.
windy
Course was in perfect condition. Never played in wind like it before really hard to control ball
Glad to hear you enjoyed your round and we look forward to welcoming you back soon
