Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
At least the greens fees we reduced.
The round started with no one at bag drop. No big deal. We carried our clubs around to the carts. Mentioned this to the pro in the pro shop and were told " that's not my area of responsibility". Really? Course conditions were horrible. I understand no grass where stands were set up but a lot of the fairways were dirt (not dead grass....dirt). Many of the other fairways look like they hadn't been mowed since the Shell Open. Not good to be in the middle of the fairway in rough length grass. Guess I should have been pleased there was any grass. Glad the greens fees were discounted but at $60 it was still overpriced. Have never played a muni course with fairways this bare. If they are not going to maintain the course while they transition to their cool weather grass, just close it like they do at TPC Sawgrass.
texas ted
The course was in good shape and the greens were fair. It was cart path only which I saw no need of. It slows down play.
Hi "tganoe" we are happy to hear that you enjoyed your round. We hope to see you back again soon.
Fairways Rough
For a course of this reputation, the course was not in good shape. The fairways were very thin and in many places no grass at all. We made an early decision to roll our ball to fairway grass when we needed to.....a bit disappointing. But the greens were good and the Caddy was great.
Regardless of the fairway condition, we had a great time and finished in 3 and half hours.
Hi "Thomorr2" thanks for the review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the conditions of our greens as well as your caddy. Come back and see us again soon!
Great!
Great course. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Houston.
Hi "u000007576537" thanks for the five star review! We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the course here at the Golf Club of Houston. We hope to see you back again soon.
Beautiful
I have played several times and as most reviewers have mentioned the course is in great shape and is a beautiful piece of property.
The staff in the pro shop are consistently friendly and helpful. Also, enjoyed having lunch in the bar and drinks after. The wait staff were extremely friendly and welcoming.
I have played this course about 10 times and I look forward to each visit.
Hey "golfrfish" thank you so much for the 5* review. We sincerely appreciate the kind words about the course and hope to see you again soon!
Love this course ! Lots of fun !
Got a huge discount from GolfNow because overnight rains put us on the paths only on this huge layout. Even with the wet conditions it was a blast to play this course in tournament conditions and measure your game against the pros (these guys are GOOD!). This is a destination type of course.
Hey "daviddvm" thank you so much for the 5* review! We are glad you had a great time out on the course! Come see us again soon.
AWESOME COURSE
Took my 12 year old daughter for her first golf outing to where the pro's play. the shell Houston open home course. This course is like the old saying you get what you pay for, plush fairways, manicured greens and long. Daughter was on top of the world just knowing that the pros play. Much respect for how long the Tour players really are watching and following at the open you don't realize how long this course really is from the tips till you play it from the tips a really wonderful experience.
Hi "ToddLangham" we are so happy to hear that you had a great time out on the course with your daughter! We look forward to having both of you out here again soon.
Beautiful course but tough
Course is very well kept and is in beautiful shape. Fairways and greens were superb.
We played it on the last day it was open for public play before the tournament so the course played very tough. Narrow fairways and long rough made accuracy a must. The wind picked up to about 30 mph and only made things worse for the last 3 holes.
Pro shop staff and forecaddy (Rob aka New York) were all great. It's a bit of a splurge but it's well worth every penny. Great experience
Hey "sanwaldjf" Thank you so much for the 5* review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time out on the course as well as our staff! We appreciate the feedback and please come see us again soon.
The course was in phenomenal shape!
Played the course 2 weeks before the Shell Houston Open and everything was in absolutely perfect condition. It was the nicest rough I ever had to play out of!!! I will always play right before the tournament from now on!
Hey "OSC232323" we are glad you got to experience the course right before the tournament! However, we strive to keep the course in immaculate condition year round so please come see us again soon.
Best Damned GC in Houston
Yes it's winter in Texas.
This course is in great shape despite the season.
The greens held and were true and were fast.
The staff was very professional and friendly and the restaurant and facilities were top notch
Thank you for your 5 star rating! We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your time at the course and look forward to seeing you back!
Valentine's Day golf
The course was in very good shape in preparation for the Shell Open. Good greens that rolled true. Very windy the day we played....at least a 2 club wind, so we played from the white tee boxes. The caddie was excellent and was very helpful.
Sadly, we were behind a group of UofH golf team members who were slow and did not allow us to play thru. On the 18th green one of the UofH players verbally assaulted us because we made some type of noise 300 yards away from him. Even our caddie was appalled by the young golfers behavior and threatened to discuss the incident with his coach. The UofH golf team member made a crude remark about us playing from the women's tees. This young mans behavior ruined what would otherwise have been a great day of golf.
Thank you for coming out to visit! We apologize for the behavior of this young golfer and thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hope you will return to be able to fully enjoy your experience here at GC of Houston.
Dallas
Played 18 with brother, and a member of the course.
Course is very nice, greens a bit slow for the money.
Overall the course is well taken care of.
The staff was not very friendly or helpful.
Looking for clothes the Asst. Pro took a few calls, and did everything to just blow off the customers calling in.
Very poor service, I bought 8 shirts and he acted like it was just too much work for him to do.
Very sad to have that level of service at such a great place.
Paid for a caddy, did not show at tee. Got a refund, but again, this was an effort with the pro!
Great place, but for the money and service, avg. value
Thank you for providing us with this feedback. We apologize for the lack of attentiveness of our staff and the inconvenience you were caused and will be addressing this issue. We hope you return and give us another opportunity to show you a greater level of service!
Forecaddie?!?? Over $80 by itself!!
Great Experience!! Just a little out of my price range.
Thank you very much for coming out to play. We are glad to hear that you had a great experience with us and we hope you get the chance to return during the Shell Houston Open so you can see how the pros play the course. We appreciate the four-star review!
Great, difficult layout.
Much better condition than last summer when we played. Our caddie was great, course was great.
Thank you so much for coming out again this year! Glad you found the course in even better shape and we are thrilled that our caddie was able to add value to your experience. We thank you for your five-star review and we hope to see you again soon.
confused caddie cost
First of the year bucket list course. Clear and 70 on a course that I have walked for the Shell Open. You pay a caddie fee after confirmation, and then a tip fee to the caddie. That was not "customery" so $30 upfront +$50 to the caddie, plus 2x$25 for other twosome. Get the Hot Deal or after 1:30. I know everyone has got to make a dime. Cart path only. Getting ready for the Shell Open.
Thank you for the review. We are sorry about the confusion with the caddy fees. We hope you will come tee it up at Golf Club of Houston again soon!
Nice course
The conditions of the fairways and greens were good, I expected better conditions, greens very heavy not like usually are and uncut fairways but anyway is an excellent course.
Thank you for the 5 star review! We appreciate hearing what our golfers have to say. Come tee it up again soon.
12/20/15
I played this past Sunday after driving down from Dallas and had a great time. I've read reviews where people were disappointed with the conditions. While they were not Shell Houston Open quality, the conditions were still phenomenal.
It was very soft when I played and tee shots were not getting more than a couple feet of roll. All surfaces on the course were in excellent shape and the rough was just long and thick enough to make hitting the fairway a priority. Both water and natural wetlands come in to play on a number of holes. Depending on the set of tees you're playing it may be a long carry in certain situations.
Even though the tees were moved up on several of the holes, it was a neat experience to play from the Shell Houston Open tee markers.
Thank you for the review and for driving from Dallas to play Golf Club of Houston! We are continuing to groom the course for the Shell Houston Open so we hope you can come back soon and experience the course again!
Excellent Course but not SHELL OPEN condition
I enjoyed playing this course especially at Hot deal rate of $35 bucks. I can now scratch it off my bucket list and move on to the next one. It was not the SHELL conditions but just as good as any country club around here. I played solo and had a caddie (not my choice) but it was a nice experience. I would definitely recommend and play here again. Every thing from tee to green was in great shape. I had no complaints except for making a caddie go with me as a single @ 1:35pm tee time.
Great Course!!
The course is phenomenal and the value through Golf Now was even better! Highly recommend!
Thank you for the feedback! We are happy to hear you felt GC of Houston was in phenomenal shape! We hope to see you again soon.
Perfect Shape
I played here for the first time and was very impressed with the course condition. Well kept fairways and greens.
Awesome! We are happy to hear you thought Golf Club of Houston was in perfect shape. Thanks for the review.

Dear Mr. Israel,
We are sorry about your disappointing experience. You may not be aware, but the Tournament Course is over-seeded with Winter Rye grass every year in November in preparation for the Shell Houston Open PGA Tour event each spring. The Rye grass grows in and is manicured to perfection leading up to the tournament, just one week before The Masters, which is also played on Winter Rye. Unfortunately, the Winter Rye burns off completely every summer, typically in June, leaving the Summer Bermuda grass to grow in. This happens every single year and those who play every year at this time are usually aware of the conditions they will be playing. By the second half of July, the course is back in pretty good shape and excellent by late summer. It is important to note, however, that the nearly perfect conditions you see on television in April are impossible to achieve during the annual transition to Bermuda, which is why we discount the fees more than 50% from our peak season rates. It is still the same track, but the rough and fairways are not the same grass. Please understand that the same superintendent and team who produce the flawless conditions for the Shell Houston Open are working even harder during the summer to get the course transitioned as quickly as possible. It is a thankless job.
Having said all this, we want you to feel you received your money’s worth so I would personally like to invite you back out in the fall on a complimentary basis to experience the course when back in good shape. Please make your reservation for a foursome with me personally via email at hLipsman@golfclubofhouston.com
