Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
First Visit
Like the layout but rain from previous days made many parts of the fairway soggy. Was surprised that there are fivesomes on Friday afternoons. Fortunately, group allowed us to overtake them.
Fun but extremely soaked
Probably should’ve closed the course. Way too wet... would lose drives in the fairway. Course overall was nice
Xmas golf
Very nice course.
Great pace.
No water buckets and no ball washers.
No trash cans either.
But very nice.
Great day considering it was Dec 20th !
Booked a two some with a rental set and forecaddie a week in advance. Before 11 a forecaddie is mandatory. At 11 or after it was optional and we wanted the advantage of course knowledge. I was advised when I called by the pro shop that they don’t really have stiff shaft rentals available. I was told at check in that they had one set but it was in use. This was a bit of a surprise and somewhat disappointing.
Forecaddie was friendly and energetic. He is a traveler yet he had pretty good course knowledge and really read greens well. That alone saved several strokes between my partner and me. I would recommend Rob to anyone.
Greens were in good shape and rolled quick. The fairways had a lot of soggy spots and we were limited to cart path only. The bunkers were raked well but seemed to be packed down. I had a more difficult time getting out of sand traps than I normally do.
The last 3 holes are wide open and it was a very gusty day of golf. With 35+ mph winds the last 3 holes were brutal. Overall a very good day.
Great course but pace of play a struggle
We enjoyed the layout and the conditions were overall above average - some very soggy areas and water damage but not the course's fault...Houston has been drenched recently.
Pace of play however is a huge issue. The course routinely lets out fivesomes. We were playing behind 2 consectuve fivesomes and our round ended up taking 5 hours on the dot.
Great course
The layout, course conditions, & friendly staff make this a great golf experience everytime I play there. There is nothing better in Houston.
Great time - better value!
Had a blast. Greens, tees & fairways are in phenomenal condition. Very challenging!
Play where the pros play
Really enjoyed the course. It was very wet from recent rainins which made some lays a little soft but credit to the course they kept it in great shape. The greens were in fantastic shape. And for anyone whose watched the Houston open, it’s awesome to play the same holes and hit the same putts you’ve seen on tv.
Wet but good condition
Only real complaint was rental clubs. My son asked for stiff, only had regular. Clubs had not been cleaned. Later I noticed a half empty water bottle coming out of the umbrella holder.
Redemption
I played here a little more than a year ago, and had a terrible experience. The pace of play was terrible, they were working on almost every hole of the course, so it was loud and intrusive. This visit however, makes me think that was an anomaly. The course was in amazing shape. The fairways were excellent, and the greens were deceptively fast and true. I couldn't have been happier with my round, and definitely recommend this course, especially when you can find a great deal on GofNow.
Definitely Big League!
1st time on the tournament course and it's in great shape - even considering the hottest period in Houston, the greens looked to have been recently punched and have recovered extremely well. Fairways were in great shape. T-boxes the same and the ruff was VERY manageable. The course is LOOOOOONG! Played from the tips that were marked. Don't come out here if you can't control the driver tho and don't try and score well if you're not locked in on your long irons. Although you do have to grip and rip - you also have to place and think 2 shots ahead if you want to put up a good number - whether it be under 80 or 90. Leave the sub 70s to the guys who get paid! There aren't too many blow-off shots where you don't have to think it thru. There is a greater appreciation for the guys on tour and what they have to carry in distance and precision to the greens. So i wanted to see how i matched up (albeit no crowds - TV or $$ on the line). So here's how it went - (nobody saw me and it's darn arrogant but I am kinda proud) I'm 54 - I carry a strong 4 handicap. From the tips marked for play, I put a up a 75 - left 7lbs of sweat on the course - donated to the pond on 18 - and dropped about 30 Advil since (played Sunday afternoon and it's Monday morning). This course will leave you stiff from ratcheting up the driver..... BUT well freekin' worth it! I've played Sawgrass - Pebble - Los Colinas - Oakmont - and now GC of Houston..... This is WELL worthy of being mentioned in the same breath!
Flawless
Course was absolutely perfect. Not a bad spot in a green and fairways softer than I've ever played. Definitely recommend this course!!
