Pittsburgh National Golf Club

About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

PGH Natioanl
I've always liked the layout but the course has deteriorated in most every respect over the last several years. Tees were rough, missing grass, and some unmowed. Some fairways has lots of bare spots. Greens were in fair to poor condition and most traps were rocky and needed sand. The changes to 10 & 11 are good, but work on both is incomplete. Lots of trash on the ground around garage cans & the main bath had a unflushed toilet mess all day. I wouldn't rush back to play this course with so many other better courses in the north suburbs.
Good but room for improvement
Nice course. Held up well under drought conditions. Could be much better with a little TLC.
My recommendation would be if possible to remove all the trees between holes. For example remove the trees between 10 and 18 and remove between 9 and 14. All they do is slow down play.
Good layout
This course has been thrown a lot of hate over the last couple of years due to renovations that were less than ideal for golfers, notably on the back 9. With that said, it is in great shape here in 2025 and being a sucker for a good layout, it is worth your time if you live in the SW PA region. I play there about 2.5 times a month and it doesn’t get old, so take that for what it’s worth.
Some good changes, some bad changes.
I liked the changes to 13 and 14, but not the originally signature hole 11 and why did they move the tee boxes on 15? That was one of the favorite holes and now a blind dog leg? Makes no sense.
Greens were good, tee-boxes were spotty, and some traps are taken care of while others are there for gathering weeds.
Could be an excellent
Course layout is great, but staff including the golf shop/grounds crew really seem to not care and it’s overpriced.
Could be so much better
Nice course, not well maintained from the tees to the carts to the cart paths. Worst pace of play in perhaps 5 years of playing public courses nearly 5.5 hours. Absurdly disappointing.
Good Course, iffy management
First, the good: Really nice layout, course has ‘good bones’ and has much more exciting/interesting greens than most comparable public couses. Big greens with lots of break go give you something to think about and plays harder than it looks as a result — and then they must not get aerated because if its dry the ball wants to bounce off those greens, they play OK overall though. Nice challenging course for good players without being too tough for the average player.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be taken care of too well and the tee times are often mis-managed and over-booked so it becomes a slog of a long round. Occasionally there is a ranger but they just hang out and do nothing to help. There are a few head-scratchers on the course — the shrubs on the right on 15 should be ripped out, the expension of 14 plays really weird, BUT the place has good bones overall. Could be really great with some help, but I’m not sure the help is coming.
Lots of Elevation changes
Course layout was challenging and fun. Need more direction signage between holes. Had a couple of “where do go “ moments finding the next tee box. Example 3 green to 4 tee was confusing being it was our first time here.
Hole tee box markers missing (or we missed them) on numerous holes.
Overall would definitely play again.
Happy they finished work on the back nine holes
We had a nice round in spite of the higher grass that comes in the spring.
PGH National October Golf
With the updated back nine, the course provides a formidable challenge with steep undulating fairways & great greens with many breaks. Choose club selection wisely as many holes require more carry than advertised. Nice fairways, greens & overall fall condition - hats off to the staff for great October golf. Nice morning pro shop staff as well...Definitely a good day for golf for us!
Nice track but poorly maintained
Very nice layout but poorly maintained. Sand traps are a total disaster. Cart path falling apart. Open ditches with no repair coming soon.
Overall, a good experience playing this course; the course is a good layout and the greens are above average. The fairways were in good condition . Pace of play was slow and tee boxes in poor condition. the on site restaurant/lounge kitchen was closed at 2pm.
