A fun course, but....
For a first time player it would not be a good experience. At least half the holes have ditches, or washes, that cross the fairways, and many of them are blind. A first-timer would have no idea what he/she is hitting into. Yardage information at each tee box would tell the golfers how much club to use. As for not recommending it to a friend, let me qualify that. If you're playing it for the first time, bring your old balls. That way it won't hurt so much when you get to a hidden hazard and can't find your ball.

Breathless
First time on this track ... a map/guide would've be helpful ... the course is beautifully maintained and the scenery/views are captivating ... slopes, elevation changes, fairway bunkers and undulating greens with some aggressive pin placements made this course my favorite to date ... eerily quiet out there ... somewhat surprised they have gas carts ... the dining facility serves class and cuisine.
Outstanding fun course
Virtually every hole is very interesting and offers some fun challenges. Many different ways to play a hole, with good risk/reward opportunities. Hidden waste/gully areas, big traps, fairways with lots of elevation changes and side slopes. Spend $2 and get a yardage booklet, because there are many hidden obstacles that can cause problems. If you don't hit it straight, bring lots of balls. I played the combo platinum/gold tees (about 6000 yds). Gorgeous views. My wife and I both really enjoyed this course and hope to return soon.
Beautiful layout but shortcomings
The Preserve at Saddlebrook is a challenging layout especially for first time. You need to know the shape of fairways and the location of ditches that cross many fairways. Nothing on card gives one a clue how to play. Found out when we arrived that restaurants/patio closed on Mon/Tues. Not good when hosting out of town guests as we were.
Probably would enjoy more second time.
SLOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!!
if you enjoy a 5 hour round where the pro shop doesn't give a rat's butt about pace of play then this is the course for you. "we don't want to offend anyone by telling them to pick up their pace". the #1 problem in golf: pace of play. these guys don't care.
Overall pretty good
The course was in very good condition. A couple of hole are tricky you can't see the dangers off the tee box and there was no course map. Greens we in excellent condition, just a little slow.
Great Day in the Catalina region!
Beautiful course and weather. Course was in good condition. Greens are surprisingly slow despite being firm and looking fast.
Improvements would be maps of hole layout on scorecard or t-box signage. Also - proshop and restaurant are closed by 3 pm at least on Monday. We were not told that carts had to be in by sunset so missed playing the last 2 holes despite remaining light.
Overall however, we would play here again and probably score better with more knowledge of the hole configuration.
Nice track-great views
Another nice day at the Preserve. Nice layout and good conditions except the slowish greens. Too bad the restaurant is closed on Mon & Tues as nice place to enjoy lunch before the round and enjoy the great views from the deck.
worth the drive,great mountain backdrops
the course is in great shape except for a lot of water has been put on it and left the bunkers in so/so shape, not raked it looked like but had sand in them, but the greens are really good to putt on and kinda hard to read, must take into account the big mountain range "behind"the course and where tucson is located if you have not played the course before some blind areas that will come into play nice par 3s and the course sits at about 3400 feet so the ball will travel a bit further..it is fun to play, tokens used on the range so get more than one
to warm up
Great course
One of the best courses I have ever played.
great course
One of my favorite courses in the area. Definitely would play again.
slow greens
fun layout, majestic views. green speed is always ridiculously slow. fast greens and fixing the irrigation woes would make this a must play
Fun, fun, fun!
This is our third annual Early Spring North Tucson trip and our third visit at The Preserve. Among the 4 courses we played in the North Tucson/Saddlebrook area, we all agreed that The Preserve was the best. The staff was friendly but I was surprised to see while there was a line waiting to check in, only 1 out of the 3 staff in the Pro shop would do the check in while the other two just stood there. Luckily that was the only slight disappointment of the day. The restaurant has a nice view of the Catalina Hills and is reasonably priced for their food and ambience. After lunch, we stepped on the course and we were taken aback by the beautiful scenery and the condition of the course. We really like the layout of the course for each hole has its own unique feature. Some are challenging which requires good placement in order to take advantage of the dog legs and/or carrying over the hazards. If the hole is long and straight, they made the fairways narrow or channel the ball towards the wash/hazard if you put the ball on the wrong side of the fairways. Two par-3 holes have big elevation drop with one over a canyon. The greens are also in great shape with some undulations but fairly true roll. At the end of the day, our two threesomes all said, "Fun, fun, fun!"

Great views of the Catalina mtns. lots of elevation changes
Put this course on your to play list, fantastic layout and in great winter shape, Troon Golf does a terrific job of maintaining a golf course and making it more playable even though the course is a challenging
course for every level of golfer.
Beautiful Setting
The front nine was as slow as a snail due to a male foursome in front of us who spent at least 10 minutes on every green. They wouldn't even let a single play through. He had to finally go around them 6th or 7th hole. The ranger talked to them but only once we were on the ninth hole. Two of the four men quit after nine and two continued on but our pace picked up and we were able to get around the back 9 with no waiting/delays.
Wonderful course
Always a great day at the Preserve. Greens could have been a bit faster, but overall the course was in very good condition.
Hidden Gem
Very challenging course. Scenery fantastic. The course was great . Highly recommend playing this one. Played on a Monday and restaurant was closed along with the pro shop when we finished around 4:00pm which was a little disappointing. Plan to play again.
Very scenic and excellent condition
If you are a first time player here beware of hidden hazards which are not visible from the tee or even on your second shot on some holes. The back of score card does not show a layout of each hole.
GREAT VIEWS
THIS COURSE IS CHALLENGING. PEOPLE ARE GREAT. COURSE OFFERS GREAT VIEWS
