Windy Knoll Golf Club
About
Windy Knoll Golf Club is known among locals as being one of Springfield's best public golf courses. The course was built in 2001, though you would not be able to tell from its traditional links design. It manages to be a classic links golf course while still being a challenge. The site was originally a horse farm and the design incorporates some of the features from the terrain's former use. Water hazards come into play frequently throughout the golf course and there are trees and rough lining the fairways. Golfers will find many risk-reward opportunities on the course, one good example being the par-4 eighth. This hole plays into the prevailing wind and if you miss your drive, you may find yourself in one of the eight bunkers surrounding the undulating green.

Improving Course
This course is steadily improving and is a lot of fun to play. Some of the greens have been damaged by wildlife, but most are interesting and receptive to good shots. The bunkers have been renovated and are well positioned. Friendly staff.
The only suggestion I have is to improve the rough, although I realize that this would slow down rounds.
Course in good shape for time of year.
In the area for a few days and saw the hot deal at the course. Well worth the drive out. Staff was very friendly and the course is in the best shape compared to anywhere Ive played in KY this year. Greens rolled pretty well and I managed to shoot 2 shots under my handicap first time out. Would definitely play again. Speed of play was fine. My only negative is there's not many yardage markers out there. The only ones I could find were 150 markers and they were really small in the fairways. Plan to play again while I'm in the area.
Harassing Rangers
The first time at this course and my last time at this course thanks to the Rangers. Two groups ahead of us and two groups behind us we're all keeping Pace with each other. When you're being told to pick up the pace and you're 152 the pain with the group in front of you on the Green is pitiful. And it was constant. What drew the line is when the ranger came into the clubhouse while people were getting a hot dog and pop and told them to hurry up it's something I've never experienced and 19 years of playing golf at any course. Other than that staff was friendly and course was in good condition for this time of year. When the ranger is constantly riding you it makes for a terrible experience.
GC's Favorite Golf Course
I first played Windy Knoll 12 or so years ago and immediately liked it. I think it has everything that makes a great golf course. Long holes, short holes, uphill and downhill shots, all four lies, several ponds that come into play and plenty of bunkers. The course is always in great condition, nice fairways, the greens are smooth and fairly fast with unseen breaks that will make you talk to yourself. It has five sets of tees to fit anyone's game. Now that I'm retired, I try to play three or four times per week. Nice staff, too! Hurry up Spring Time!!
Windy Knoll
Always a great trip over to Springfield to play this track 2-3 times per season.
However due to some serious turf & grass problems the course was not in very good shape vs. previous outings. Hopefully they will correct whatever issue they are having with the turf before we return next season. Given those conditions we experienced on Saturday I would think either a pre round notification would have been in order or a discounted fee to play would have been in order.
Grumpy staff goose poo on greens
I've been playing this course on Sunday evenings for about three weeks with my wife and young son. They have been blocking off major sections of fairway to repair turf. The remaining holes that are not blocked off are poorly maintained. Outside of the fairway, the grass is so high, it feels like the ball should be marked out of bounds. The ninth hole was so covered in goose poop, we couldn't even putt without stepping in it or having our ball go through it. Two weeks in a row, I requested to play the back nine holes with my family and we were told we had to play the front nine. This evening, the staff was rude and told us we had to play the front nine holes once again and questioned us and asked "don't you guys have trouble getting nine holes in?" My family and I play nine holes in about two hours.

Was disappointed that there were no diagrams of the holes at each t box. No water fountains either so bring something to drink. Great Course, very challenging but slow play.
Windy Knoll is always enjoyable
Great weather, good pace of play. Only issue in course condition was the first hole fairway. A large swath of turf is currently being replaced and was roped off. Of course, my drive was right down the middle in the dead turf, LOL.
The greens were pretty quick but had quite a few un-repaired ball marks. (no fault of the course, just lazy golfers). I just booked another round for tomorrow. See ya there.
The course was miserable this date
It had rained most of the week before this and play was cart path only. There were many large areas roped off that you could not play in or ride your cart in. That made for lots of walking between ball location and cart path. Having to move your ball from the roped off parts of the fairway, over to the side, resulted in having to hit from a less advantageous position — resulting in a less optimal final score.
In Windy Knolls defense, I have played there many times in the past and the course has usually been in great shape. The wetness, overseeding and large roped off areas and cart path only combined to make it a very miserable experience. And the course wouldnt allow me to reschedule my paid Golf Now voucher. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!
Grounds crew is doing a great job.
The greens have been maintained pretty great this summer considering the amount of play the course gets. They are even speeding up a little again. Keep up the good work!
Goose!!!
So why are there 100 geese on number 1 and 9? That is no exageration! They are destroying the grass around the pond and the rough/fairway on 9 and there are droppings everywhere on both holes. I cant decide if its more gross or sad... They also decided to aerate the greens, again... They were soooo slow it was ridiculous. I have played here before and I have never seen it in such poor shape. They put up signs that says to fix ball marks. There is a ranger that just drives around and looks for golf balls. Why wont he fix ball marks on the greens since he wont encourage the slow group ahead to keep pace! The fairways are so patchy, and only some of the bunkers had sand in them. This was not worth the $45. Get rid of the geese, mow the greens, fix the fairways. Save yourself $20 and go play Reid North!
Still awesome
Haven't been there for a few years but course is still great. We had to stay on cart path which is annoying however it keeps course nice. Greens held and putted great. Fairways good. Worth your time for sure.
Fun course, some concern about conditions
Windy knoll is always a fun course to play. The grass on the course has some strange fungus looks like; not sure what thats about, but just noticed this issue this year. Colors of the grass differ throughout the course and different types of grass throughout, almost looks like weeds or something. Value ok for the money compared to other courses in the area.
Pace of play was ok for a Sunday. Greens seemed to be slower than I remember than a few years ago. The clubhouse and snack bar are great, excellent job!
I'll be back in a month or so to see if the conditions improved.
Great Layout
Windy Knoll is one of my favorite golf courses in the Dayton/Springfield area. It has a great layout with a nice variety of holes. It has some really challenging par 3's, especially #13 the long downhiller. The course was in great shape when I played. Only negative was the goofy ranger who decided to walk up on the green and stand by the flag as I hit my approach shot into the 1st hole. Not sure why he thinks that's ok or needed...he should of been ahead of me trying to speed up a few slow groups. Still can't wait to come back and play again!
