Colonial Country Club
About
Colonial Country Club, located in Fort Worth on the southern banks of the Trinity River and near TCU, is one of the most historic golf clubs in Texas. The club was founded in 1936 by Marvin Leonard, who sought to have a north Texas club with smooth, bent grass greens (unheard of at the time, as many courses had either sand or Bermuda turf). The course was originally designed by Texan John Bredemus and Oklahoma architect Perry Maxwell, who formally worked with Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Holes no. 3-5 are nicknamed the “Horrible Horseshoe” and represent the strongest stretch on the course, featuring a 247-yard par-3 4th hole bookended by long and demanding par 4s. Colonial Country Club hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, won by Craig Wood and was the first time the event was staged in Texas. Despite now playing over 7,200 yards, Colonial maintains a reputation to this day as a ball-striker’s playground. Ben Hogan won the Colonial golf tournament five times. Other multiple winners of this longstanding PGA Tour event include Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw.

Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Florida (2014 #11)
Reviews
Very nice course.
Great shape, nice layout , challenging , but fair.
the best course I have played during my current vacation in Florida
I have played several different courses in S/W Florida the last weeks. This one was the best. Very friendly staff and the course was a real pleasure to play.
Good Condition
This course has a good layout and in good conditions. The staff are super friendly. I would play this course again and recommend.
Good conditioned
This course has a good layout. The tees, fairways and greens are in good condition. The pace of the play is acceptable in 4 hours. The staff are super friendly. I would play it again and recommend.
In good condition
The course is in good condition. The staff are super friendly. The pace was a little slow due to heavy play on Sunday. I would play it again and recommend.
rewards good shots, greens fun to putt - true and fast.

Challenging but fair, don't go to far off line, maybe sometimes opt for a wood and leave your driver, you know what I mean!!!
Fabulous course, a very good standard, greens were perfect, fairways were well maintained, and overall a superb course. Downside, we couldn't get a beer when we finished at 4pm as the bar was closed, very strange for us British folk!!!
This course could be a great one, if..... (see review)
Positive: friendly staff, well maintained course, fast and fair greens, challenging, nice clubhouse
Negative:Players we're squeezed in according to a packed schedule ( more than 250 players that day!). A lot of twosomes between three- and foursomes and a crowded weekend, there are better solutions possible.
A dangerous situation should be changed at the 17th hole ( par 3):
the carts drive on the way to the tee through the Drive Zone of the previous flight, the warning sign appears much to late!
Great course and great value!
The Colonial CC surprised four of us with a challenging, very well maintained course with staff that went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. The fairways, greens and the bunkers were all A plus. The course presented a challenge for 4 single digit handicappers but offered fairness at any level of skill. Try it and you will return.
This course is great
This course was in good condition,
We liked this course and its lay out.
Fabulous
Very pristine with great speed of greens. Challenging pin placements with subtle but readable lines. Nice test of golf and super enjoyed it. Will play it again soon and nicest place to play a game of golf. Highly recommend this course. O
Great course. Very pretty
Loved the course. Wish we could play it in season greens were great. The course was very good for my wife to play. Would like to see senior lady tees
This Course is in a perfect shape...
this place is easy to reach. perfect condition, verey nice clubhouse...good beer and food
great course in shape
Lots of casual water from recent heay rains. Fairways and greens in great condition.
One of the best course in this Area
Course was in great shape. Staff friendly and everything ran on time. For a longer course I was surprised we were done in four hours considering how busy the course was. Greens ran true and and were moderate in speed.
Fairways in good shape. A coke for 1,50 :-))
Immaculate golf course.
I have been to country club courses before and have not been impressed. This course was tremendous. Well maintained and not busy the day I played. I'll play this course again when I'm in town.
A very nice CC
This course was being maintained when I played it. The greens hand been aerated and sanded. There were people at work all over the course. The fairways were cut very short; some down to the soil. AND, many fairways were soaking wet and unplayable and no carts permitted.
GOLF NOW needs to make course conditions part of the daily tee times schedule. This has happened at least three times that I played since moving to FL.
.
The only bad think was that the greens were just spiked and they did not tell us ahead of time. The greens were almost unplayable. Usually this is a great course.
There should be a way to know this before you pay the fee to golf now.
Good Track
This was about my 5th trip to Colonial, and my 2nd time playing it from the tips.
As with every visit, the staff is easy to deal with, typically knows what is going on... and immediately got me out early. The difference this time was that the grounds crew was out doing work on the course. Unfortunately a few of them were pretty oblivious to my play... and continued to drive or blow leaves and such while I played through. A few of them were quite brave, waiving me through while standing a few feet from the green... so novice players beware.
Course was in pretty good shape as always, the fringes are a little rough, and there is a clear outline of each green carved into the ground. However, this doesn't really come in to play unless your ball happens to stop in the crack.
Overall I had the same, generally good experience I always have here... which I was I came back. Fun course, a little bit of a challenge if you get out of position, and never seems to be too backed up in the afternoons.
Very nice yet difficult course
Colonial was in excellent condition. It has a great layout and provides a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. Some fairways are very narrow on the back nine but overall it is a fair course.
