Links of Sandpiper
About
Links of Sandpiper in Lakeland offers a traditional links layout that sprawls across rolling terrain. The course is player friendly enough for players of all skill levels to enjoy but it has enough challenges for more advanced players as well. The course is anything but flat, and the ups and downs are the most challenging element you'll encounter. The small, undulating greens and narrow landing areas off of the fairways demand accuracy. Combined with elevation changes and strategically placed bunkers, proper club selection and course management also play important roles. Picking the right lines from the tees into the greens requires careful thought. You'll face a few blind shots thanks to the rolling terrain and there are also several bunkers strategically placed along the greensides. Links of Sandpiper's final four holes are the toughest stretch.

Course should of been closed due to amount of rain fall from yesterday storm. We we’re very surprised that the staff didn’t tell us that we would be walking in water 2 inches in the fairways This wasn’t in one spot it was in very fairway never had we seen so much water after first two holes we called the pro shop to make report of conditions no answer and no returning of our message. Went back to office found that staff had changed and the new person had no clue what the course conditions were. We packed up and left covered in mud and feet totally soaked. If they don’t care about their course why should we. Also the greens are over come with weeds. Don’t worry we won’t be back.

Wow. No.
This place sucks. Drive 10 mins any way and find a course that’s actually worth playing. 7 1/2 hours to play 18 holes thanks to my 10:22 tee time that 6 other groups were able to book. Horrible. Just go anywhere else

Buzz kill back 9
I’ve grown up in Lakeland and have played sandpiper many times. When they started renovating the course I was ecstatic. However, now that the back 9 is done and the front 9 is virtually untouched, I can say they should have stopped before they ever started. The lay out of the back 9 will test your agility as you will have to dodge everyone’s tee shots after hole 13. You can dodge a wrench but you can’t dodge tee shots at sandpiper. Also who the heck waters the course mid day when it’s packed with golfers. Oh, and when I say packed with golfers I mean there will be a line of at least 10, foursomes waiting at the first tee who all have the same tee time. There is no driving range the bar is nice but serves dollar general hotdogs for 6 bucks a pop. The scorecards don’t match the course. All of the gps apps don’t work because of the renovations.. All in all I would say this course had potential and failed miserably.
We appreciate feedback both positive and negative, however a few additional clarifications are needed:
You say you grew up in Lakeland and have played the course many times, the lack of a driving range is mentioned – the driving range was eliminated in the late 80’s as more homes were developed. We have a 5 bay warm up area where any club can be hit, it is lighted and it is cooled by a misting fan system. The front 9 is referenced as “untouched”, yet every green has been renovated, hole 2 is now a par 3, 3 is a par 4, 4 is a par 5, the 7th green has been moved to eliminate the area that could not be maintained to the side of it and the 8th green has been moved to allow for a more generous landing areas around the green. A new irrigation system has been installed throughout the entire course. It appears you submitted 2 separate reviews, both indicate that 10 groups typically wait on the first tee – our tee times are separated like any other course and are 8 minutes apart – this is standard in the industry
Holes 14 through 18 are specifically mentioned – holes 14 and 16 are separated by the same trees that have separated the two fairways for decades, hole 15, while reversed in orientation, now has its green further away from the 16th tee than it was previously. Hole 16 has two ponds to create a forced layup – this was demanded by the city to protect the road from errant shots, hole 17 is now more removed from both the 14th tee and the 18th tee than was the previous design. The 18th, which is now a par 3, to be hit by a ball there would be the result of a tee shot from 17 going off at a 45 degree angle from an anticipated aiming point – we cannot cure poor golf.
As far as watering during the day, we have recently installed additional new tee boxes to increase course length on holes 4, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16 , 17 and 18 – over 20,000 sqft of new sod was placed on these new tees – due to the drought conditions we are going through to insure the health of the new sod these areas were put on a watering cycle every 2 hours for 8 minutes – without frequent watering, the new sod would not survive.
GPS systems not being up to date are something we unfortunately cannot control – it is up to the individual manufacturers to update their system and the pandemic has put them far behind.
As for our hot prices, ours are Nathans hot dogs and, if you have not already read about it, there are shortages on beef and pork due to production staffing issues at the plants and the cost has risen significantly.
I hope these comments help you to better understand the circumstances and help to clarify any concerns you have. We do hope you'll give us another shot in the future.
Don’t play the back nine
The front nine is fun and challenging also is in good shape, but the back nines set up is unbelievable terrible. I’ve been hit at less as a part time ball picker upper at a driving range than I did today playing the back nine. I will never play the back nine here again. They will cram 10 groups playing with a 1-2 different minute tee time making you wait 10+ mins just to hit your second shot. Just so they can make up for the money they spent remodeling the back nine in to the dumpster fire it is now.
Hi, Kyle4363651. Thank you for taking the time to review the course. We take single star feedback very seriously at our course. You are welcome to comment further or reach out to our team in the golf shop. We always appreciate the feedback. Thank you for playing Links of Sandpiper.
Watering when players are on the field??
This is the ONLY golf course I have ever visited that waters while players are acticely playing. This wasn't the first time for me. Players are frustrated, even angry. Don't they know that over 30% of the watering is wasted through evaporation when watering during the FL hot days? Why can't they water during the evening or early morning hours when players are NOT on the field??
Thank you for the feedback! However, we have recently installed additional new tee boxes to increase course length on holes 4, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16 , 17 and 18 – over 20,000 sqft of new sod was placed on these new tees. Due to the drought conditions we are going through to insure the health of the new sod these areas were put on a watering cycle every 2 hours for 8 minutes – without frequent watering, the new sod would not survive. We hope you'll visit us again in the near future.

Good course!
I’m we had a lot of fun. The course layout on the back 9 is kinda crazy. But overall it’s a nice course.

Great Layout
Entire course was a decent challenge. Greens rolled very well. There are some re-sodding areas on a few greens, otherwise no issues. Grew up in Lakeland but never played the course. Don't know what the back nine used to look like, but the changes are very nice. Put away the driver after #10. Just keep it in play. Lots of "hidden" water out there.
Hi, asal70. Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing Links of Sandpiper.
