Fine...
First, it’s clear Sanibel is not a golf destination. The Dunes is “way” overpriced for what it offers. The course is very short at 5700 par 70, from the back tees. Water on 17 out of 18 holes, but doesn’t come into play as much as you’d think. The layout is a little goofy, due to the limitation of land. This course would be fine, if not for the price. I like playing in the morning and $105 for this course just doesn’t make sense. I tend to play the nicer courses when I have the chance and have no issue paying the going rate to play them, but this doesn’t live up to the expectation. At $50-$75 this would be a different review... a cute little course that makes the most out of what it has. Condition was ok... The greens were inconsistent, slow to medium speed with a couple that were noticeably faster. Bunkers were damp, packed and damp (no rain for days here), obviously lacking maintenance and needing more sand. The back has some solid holes. 14 thru 18 are good finishing holes, with a couple challenging par 4’s, a longish par 3 into the wind and a couple reachable par 5’s. I like that stretch. The course needs one of two things. Either, lower the price and keep it the way it is, or keep the price and bring up the overall course conditions. I understand they have a captive audience, but they could do better.
Plenty of Water
The course, while a bit short on yardage, makes up for it by bringing water into play on almost every hole. The course was in excellent shape with tee boxes, fairways and greens all well maintained. The first nine moved along at a decent pace but the back nine was extremely slow. Other than that it's a track worth considering.
Dunes Day 2
After playing the Dunes course For the 1st time on Monday I decided to try it again on Wednesday to see if I could Improve on my 1st outing. Well I lost 5 balls on Monday and then 6 balls on Wednesday in all that water on a windy day so NO improvement but I still enjoyed the course and the challenges it presents.
Dunes GC
The golf course was beautiful and challenging. Water EVERYWHERE and small greens require pinpoint accuracy. Enjoyed my round and contributed 5 balls to the collection. Will endeavor to lose less balls next time. Highly recommend this course.
Great course. Short but challenging. Will be back for sure. Have to be able to hit your shots. Had to lay up on several holes. Scenery is good and weather was great. Thanks guys
Beautiful
Great course and challenging. Great turkey club at the 19th hole.
The course was totally dried out and the grass brown!
Golfed with Mark from MN
Started out as a single but Mark came up behind me & we had a wonderful day of golf. Greens were consistent & putting was a key to good round of golf. Really enjoyed the day.
Back again and better than ever
I made my way back to the Dunes for my yearly Florida visit. The course was in great condition, even better than last year and I was quite impressed last year. Bunkers seemed a lot cleaner this year and the gator population was much more prevalent. I love seeing gators on the course and I was not disappointed. The back 9 is one of my favorite stretches of holes. A short track but definitely not one you take lightly, I played here two times during my trip and the second round we caught the wind, nothing quite like heavy wind and a lot of water to set your ego straight. I love it here and would recommend to anyone. The price is a little high but the amenities and scenery help create value.
Beautiful course lots of water
Beautiful course with tons of water. Most tee shots require a lay up. I loved playing the course. The staff are extremely helpful and course is in great shape.
Island style layout course
This course has a great layout with a lot of challenging water features. Well thought out design that provides a lot of risk reward style shots that include water. The course is fairly spread out and would be a distance to walk. Typical flat Florida course but it is spread out between holes. Would recommend this course and th Tennis facility.
Short, but not a cake walk.
The Dunes is a fun course and one that I highly recommend to anyone visiting this part of town. The course is on the shorter end. Roughly 5600 yards from the tips, but don't discount it. It may sound short but if you are not accurate and controlled, you will be swimming, a lot. It is a great challenge with the irons and keeping your driver in check. I loved my round, I will absolutely be back. The course was in great condition, greens looked great and rolled well. They have some tricky greens so be prepared. What it loses in distance, the course gains in strategic bunkers, water, and undulating greens. The tee boxes were filled in and nicely kept. Some very memorable holes here which you will have a lot of fun with. The clubhouse was really nice, looked like it was brand new. The cost was a little high given they charge $8 for a yardage book. The staff was very nice, everyone was welcoming and the started gave me a quick rundown about the course before I teed up. They also have a range that is very unique. You hit down range into water, I have never seen that before. Plenty of wildlife for people who like that, white sand bunkers and new carts. Sounds like a recipe for a course I would enjoy. There are a lot of homes on the course, some of which are only a blade away from paying for a new window. This course will give you anxiety if you get nervous when homes are near. Give it a try, you will have fun and its a great test. I recommend it.
Survived the hurricane nicely
Love this course. Hit it where you want it, or bring some extra balls. Lots of water. Beautiful, challenging layout in great condition.. Friendly staff.
Great course value
Staff made great moves to accommodate us running late. Course in great shape ,short but plenty of challenge m
The Dunes is a beautiful course I've played on prior trips to Fla. The staff has done a remarkable job cleaning up following Irma (which turned inland just before reaching Sanibel relatively sparing the island).
I was surprised how good the course condition was. Great Staff - they go out of way to see you have an enjoyable round. I've played this course once or twice a year for the past 6 years.
Fun course
Pace of play was slow because of 4 some that was 2 groups in front of us. Teamed up with the person in front us and behind us and was still held up. If you only hit it 175 yards at the most don’t play from tees in front of the back especially with the wind. Fun course
So, what about the course? That's the idea of the reviews, isn't it?
