Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

POOR GREENS
THE FAIRWAYS WERE BROWN LOOKING BUT STILL IN DECENT SHAPE. THE GREENS HOWEVER ARE STILL HEALING AFTER BEING PUNCHED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. OVERALL THE GREENS WERE NOT IN GOOD SHAPE WITH SOME BEING STICKY LIKE VELCRO , SOME SLOW, OTHERS WERE OK. THE PRACTICE GREEN WAS NOT INDICATIVE OF THE WAY THE COURSE GREENS WERE.
Greens
Greens still recovering from aeration over all course in great shap
Talega
Great layout golf course, great pace of play and the green is awesome a must play course
Not like the old days.
Course has gone downhill recently. No starter, no marshall, no cart girl. Hazard areas overgrown. Course seems neglected.
Poor Conditions
My first time at the course. The layout/challenge was nice but the course conditions were poor for the value if you were paying full price to play here.
The greens were very slow as if they hadn't cut them today. Then the greens got more interesting on the back with different green materials. You had the normal green grass on the majority of the green but they replaced poor areas with a much greener, shorter cut grass on parts of the green that had previously died. So the result is guesswork on how fast or slow they would be on the back nine.
The fairways had crab grass tufts all over and I just decided to play winter rules as good drives shouldn't be penalized by poor fairway conditions. The fairways were very form and so you will get longer than normal drives from excessive run out.
The sand traps were very hit or miss and had exposed weed liner on the front nine. Some were very thin and some were overly thick.
The staff was ok in customer service outside of the the club cleaner after finishing the round whom drove the cart to my car.
I'm happy to have played the course and it's a shame that the course is poor version of its former self. The design is great and very challenging.
Would have been much better if it was't cart path only.
Great course But, the driving range sucks
The course the staff the layout the conditions were great the problem was that the driving range was very far from the clubhouse and you had to hit off mats and the mats were about the worst I’ve seen even at a cheap course
Also it would be nice if you could get balls at the driving range instead of having to get them at the pro shop because if you didn’t know you would go all the way to the driving range which is a quite a ways away and then have to go back and get the balls at the pro shop other than this the course was great
Frost delay
40 minute frost delay .... they don’t tell you until after you pay and go to the starter who is an obnoxious a hole... payed for a bucket of balls, didn’t have any told if I wanted to complain then I should go back in and get my money back... my playing party has cerebral palsy, we asked for a handicap flag.. gage gave it to us and then angrily explained to us that we couldn’t get within 30 yards of the green. I said thank you but we know that this is. Not his first handicap flag. He was born this way? He was like whatever, you know I have to tell all you people! Then they had a team tournament, no that didn’t add more time on the group we waited on all day playing from the blue tees and took 2-3 shots off every tee.... then hit it 200 yards... :( thanks Talega I’ll stick to my home course MonarchBeach
Will never come back
Booked a tee time with GolfNow VIP, got a confirmed tee time a day in advance, when I arrived to the course was told my tee had changed to an hour later. The reason given was that GolfNow always books the next available time when the CONFIRMED time is not available, I’ve been with GolfNow VIP for over a year and book tee times at least three times a week and have never had any problems or heard of such a thing, that reason was BS. What probably happen was the course received time request from their member/regular players and moved the GolfNow guess to accommodate.
The course itself was not in very good condition, lots of dirt spots in the fairway and on the greens.
But worst of all was the STARTER, super rude and unprofessional person, we play 3 to 4 times a week but will never spend another dime at this place or recommend it to any of our friends.
A Crime what has happened
I was a member here for 7 years and when joined this course was the jewel of South orange county, but new ownership has turned this once magnificent course from the best to the worst. 1. Gen Mgr is accountant no knowledge of golf course maintenance or administration only task is to save cost. 2. Unqualified greens keeper has no accredited training was promoted from the maintenance staff to save cost of qualified greens keeper. (he is very good at watering) 3, Owner will not allocate funds to properly maintain the course everything is reactive not proactive. The local San Clemente Muni is a far superior value and far better condition. For anyone who has played Shorecliffs in San Clemente only difference is Shorecliffs has better greens. To sum up this review in my opinion Talega is overpriced and under performed.
Beautiful and Tough
Course is very beautiful, nothing was easy as most shots were on sloping areas, green very fast, the back nine was unforgiving for new players with several blind shots. Probably above my skill level
Overpriced and no amenities
Cart path only for no reason.
Driving range is closed.
Cart GPS stopped working on 8.
Staff was unprofessional and we were an inconvenience for being there.
At 6:30 we had to knock on the windo to get them to open the door.
