The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Tortolita/Wild Burro
About
The desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range provide the stunning backdrop for the three nines designed by Jack Nicklaus at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. They are played in three different 18-hole combinations, one of them being Tortolita/Wild Burro. The Tortolita nine serves as the back nine for the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Play Championship, but Nicklaus considers Wild Burro to be the best of the three. Playing through canyons and desert washes, the golf course features dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. Tortolita's third hole has the highest elevation at the club while the ninth hole on Wild Burro is the longest finishing hole of any of the nines. The intricately contoured greens and strategic fairway bunkering provide a challenge for even experienced golfers.

#3 on Saguaro Photo submitted by timstaley on 10/25/2012
Interesting Round
First, it was a very windy day. That being said, if you have a high handicap, just go to the 19th hole. The course was in very good shape. There were some brown areas, but overall the Course was green. The highlight was the bunkers. They were in excellent shape. If you play Desert courses often, you know that is the #1 issue. Well done Course workers.
Just a great course!
A great course made better by a deal on GolfNow. A multitude of bunkers, with excellent sand, make this course very challenging.
Not for Amateurs
We played in windy conditions but even without wind would be tough. Lots of hazards at 200-240 off tee forcing 5 wood or hybrid tee shots on many holes. Then 170-200 yard hybrid or iron shots to elevated greens. Fairway bunkers on most holes, some in middle of the fairway. Very dry and firm greens would hardly hold quality shots. Bring your short game. Gorgeous desert property next to Tortolitas.
Green side traps
Practice trap was great, 1st hole trap had foot prints and was unraked. Sand was mostly packed and hadn’t been tended in awhile.
Feel like a pro
Playing a course with nothing to complain about is not append oftenly. Really gorgeous day. When you feel a wow on almost every holes fron the tee is incredible.
Bring Your Best Putting Skills
The course and greens were in excellent condition. The greens have lots of elevation changes, bends and twists. Knocking it close, while always a good idea, is even more important here.
. Definitely worth the 20 minute or so travel time from Tucson. Can't wait to play Dove Mountain again
Bring Your A Game
4 of us played this course with handicaps ranging from 5 - 10. The fairways were ample but the greens were the most challenging we have ever played on. All the greens were elevated and small. Better hit the right spot in the greens or you will be penalized severely. You will either be faced with a pitch shot back onto the green or a putt that is hard to get down in 2. The golf staff were great but the restaurant hostess (whom I think was about 16) was not very accommodating). We were going to eat dinner and have a few drinks. The restaurant, patio, and bar had about 40 empty tables and we were told there was no room and that they would all be full in the next hour and there was no room for us. They lost out on our probably $200.00 bill and we also cancelled our tee time the for next day and played Starr Pass and extremely glad we did.
Past its prime
This is a course that used to host a world golf championship but is not in the same shape as the pictures. It's not bad, but not great. I wouldn't pay more than $60 for this course in hindsight when you look at other courses in the area.
Course is kind of gimmicky too with short fairways, very difficult greens
It's a nice looking course and kept in good condition , but it is a horribly designed course. It's designed for only one style of player. Playing a course like this just takes all the fun out of golf . I would highly recommend playing starpass at the Marriott over this one
Beautiful course, bring lots of balls
We love this course but there are some desert areas that seem to collect golf balls. I enjoy the greens and surrounding area but the severity of a missed shot is frustrating at times. Still all in all it is a great course and we play it for the challenge and the beauty not to score low. In fact we don’t even keep score except match play.
Not a fair test
I now understand why the WGC moved. The course is very tough (I am a 4 and I played w a 2). The fairway are hard and fast and the greens are the same. Add hundreds ad fairway bunkers and what you have is a course that will penalize good shot and reward bad ones. The green are so hard they do not mark, even on decent approach shots. For $140, it’s your worst nightmare. The only upside is that it is gorgeous. Don’t plan on eating anything. We played on st Patrick’s day, a Saturday and the Turn Grill was closed and there wasn’t a cart girl to be found. Had to order a hot dog at the bar. Took 25 minutes.
“A” players only
course is 6330 yds from the “sr” tees
fairways all slope and you often roll into hazards ( traps or aroyo’s) from straight center fairway landing spots
for a 20 handicap that drives 200-220 you are going after most greens with a 3 or 5 wood ( or it is just plain out of range) and then greens are lightning fast, hard and sloped so you’ll never hold a green
cart paths meander through desert after the T and you tend to lose your line ( complaint of my entire foursome)
need a couple more sets of tees between the 3rd set and the fronts which are 5300 we had 1 average female in our group and her tees needed to be about 400 yards close also her 160 yard drives left her 2 nd shots unable to fly most aroyo’s
If you are an “A” player and drive 280 or further this course might be playable but I played with 2 players of A caliber and they had their own challenges with rolling off of fairways with center fairway drives and holding greens even when approaching with short irons
bottom line is this course is not for the casual golfer even the best players will be challenged here and card extra strokes that resulted from “good” shots rolling into bad places
Outdoor staff seemed somewhat indifferent to getting groups to the first tee in time - no starter was present saw beverage cart twice in the entire round played in 4:20
I’ve never been a fan of courses that penalize you for hitting shots to the preferred landing area and that is what this layout does
Too tricked
I have played this course twice in the past month. Probably won’t again. The course is too tricked up. From the drive through the green everything is difficult. Especially the greens. If you don’t hit it too the right spot it will probably run off green or give you a rediculou putt. Drive run into bunkers if not hit to specific spots. Just too hard to have fun. A good golf course messed up with too many bunkers and rediculos greens
Nice Course - extremely slow play ,
Very nice course and amenities - No Marshall’s to address the extremely slow play -,waited on every hole and when finally finished the restaurant required a reservation to have a post round drink. Otherwise would play there again and make a reservation for when you hope the round ends...
Greens
Greens extremely difficult to putt. Very little depth to the green cover.
Best golf in Tucson area
This is clearly the best golf experience in the Tucson area. The interesting and challenging layout is complemented by stunning views. The moment you step off the 18th green, you will start planning your next visit.
Diabolical greens
Friendly staff
fairways great
rough easy to play out of
bunkers nice
greens FAST and diabolical undulations
enough tees for any level but
A real test not for the beginner
if you can afford 185 ish then its a must play but you will be tired mentally after.
Authentic desert experience
Only suggestion would be to make sure you have a green map.
