The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Tortolita/Wild Burro
About
The desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range provide the stunning backdrop for the three nines designed by Jack Nicklaus at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. They are played in three different 18-hole combinations, one of them being Tortolita/Wild Burro. The Tortolita nine serves as the back nine for the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Play Championship, but Nicklaus considers Wild Burro to be the best of the three. Playing through canyons and desert washes, the golf course features dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. Tortolita's third hole has the highest elevation at the club while the ninth hole on Wild Burro is the longest finishing hole of any of the nines. The intricately contoured greens and strategic fairway bunkering provide a challenge for even experienced golfers.

Tough desert golf - if you want fast greens this is your place
Played on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. This course is fair off the tee's but be careful you play the correct tee. The course plays so firm that what you think is a good tee shot ends up in a bunker or the desert because how it was set up. Greens did not hold well struck shots and would bounce off the back.
The pins when we played were tucked in difficult locations and in some cases if you had a downhill putt and it goes past the hole it would roll off the green.
This course easily plays 10 shots harder than your handicap. I normally shoot high eighties to low nineties, I was triple digits by 15th hole.
Not sure we will be back, there are other courses in the area that are groomed just as nice for a better value and overall experience.
Bring your best
The course is awesome. Well designed and very pretty views. Putting green and practice facilities are very nice. Staff is great. Now the bad news. Greens are for the most part, large, undulating and in great shape. The speed of the greens however made them unforgiving. You couldn’t keep balls on them. Our foursome of 6,10 and 15 handicap three putted many of these. Many chips got close to pins and rolled off the greens. Made for a very grumpy group.
The course is an excellent facility. The scenery was wonderful. The course was a difficult test for me, particularly the greens. The pins were difficult to get reach. There was a lot of undulation in the greens and the pins were cut on top of small ridges or on side hills.
We aren’t professional golfers
Picking the appropriate tee is very important when you play here. But the most important is figuring out the putting. Too firm and it goes 3’-5’ past the hole and too soft and it breaks too much. That is the heartache and joy of playing this layout! It is also hard to concentrate on the golfing part when the views are so breathtaking, which is why I try and play here whenever I get to Tucson!
Wicked Greens
This was a nice getaway from the snow and cold!
I really enjoyed playing this Nicklaus designed course. The strategically placed bunkers and fast greens made for a difficult challenge. I would recommend playing Dove Mountain if you are in the Tucson area!
Beautiful but Tough
Played Dove Mountain on sunny but windy Monday. Not too many people on the course. The course is really quite scenic and there was a sense of isolation. It was in great shape. Although the greens looked like they were in poor shape, the ball rolled smoothly. There are a lot of bunkers on this course and, with the slopes of some of the holes, shots do have to be placed strategically. This was made even more challenging with the 15 mph winds on this day. As a mid - handicapper, I really had to decide where I was aiming, either to bail out or to get the least damaging place to miss. Shots into the brush are gone, so bring lots of balls. The greens were also very challenging, demanding precision speed and line. I think of myself as a good putter so I did enjoy them. In speaking with one of the staff, he said that speed on the greens on this day was not much slower than what the pros used to have to contend with so I really had an appreciation for their putting abilities. This is a tough course. This is not a course for a beginner. Good test for low handicappers. The rack rate is apparently about $170. Our group was able to get a much better price due to online promotions. I would definitely play this course again.
Not for amateurs
Tough courses. Played Saguaro and Tortolita. Beautiful courses, but not for most amateur golfers. No ball washers or club wash on carts, so they give you a towel and say wet it in the ice chest where they have bottled water. Very tough undulating greens which are hard to read and firm for approach shots. Great for a one time play to experience a very tough course. Unless you are a good player, recommend playing at least one tee forward of your normal game or you will be more frustrated. I can understand why the pros didn’t have good comments when they played here. Scoring a 38 on Tortolita from the copper tees was my enjoyment for the day.
BRUTAL
Course is beautiful, but super hard. Course was a little dry and greens were super fast. Doesn't help when the greens have 0 flat spots. Definitely one of the hardest courses I have ever played.
Typical Jack!
I keep hoping that one day I’ll play a Jack course and have fun. His only architectural styling is to make the course as hard as possible. It’s no wonder no one was playing when I played. Conditions were good and the greens were rolling true. Kudos to the greens staff. Take a look why there aren’t any Jack courses being played on the PGA tour aside from the memorial, where the course has been redone so many times that it is starting to not resemble a Jack course. You had a great Golf career Jack but your architecture is for the birds.... not birdies!
One of my favorites
Wonderful mountain course. Difficult for a high handicapper. Tees, fairways both excellent. Greens good with some blemishes. Contours is the greens are some of the most difficult I ever play. Still, a must play.
not for the average golfer
The course is beautiful but extremely challenging; especially as you near or are on the greens. An approach shot that is one or two yards off target can end up in trouble. Lots of bunkers to catch tee shots as well. I'm a single digit handicapper and had very few pars, despite striking the ball well.
Golfers should play it at least once to understand what the pros contend with and experience a little humility.
Can’t recommend
The course is pretty and the pace of play is fine. But the greens are absurdly hard. The greens were as hard as a rock so even if you hit a perfect shot the ball would careen wildly off to who knows where Not a fun course.
Great time
We attended the WGC Match Play here in 2011 and always said we wanted to come play it once. Didn't get to play the original 18 but got to play the original back nine. We enjoyed every minute of it even though the greens were crazy to putt on (multiple 3-putts and a 4-putt). Would love to come back and play again some day. The views are amazing.
Maybe next time will be better
My wife and I had heard this was one of Tucson best golf courses to play. After playing we were left a bit disappointed. I believe the fact that the course was very dry had a lot to do with this.
The course layout is great and the scenery exceptional. I found the course quite difficult and the fact that the greens would not hold a high approach shot did not make the situation better. Also the greens were quick and had many undulations.
I would look to play again because I believe thus would be a great course.
Beautiful day on a challenging track
The greens at this course are possibly the most difficult I’ve played. Not only were they undulating, they had speed. Definitely a course to play multiple times if you desire to score. My first time on Dove Mountain as a 3 handicap and it got the best of me. I’ll be back to seek revenge now that I have an idea on how to attack each green.
Excellent Layout with tough greens
This is an excellent course with very difficult greens. Fair from all the tees depending on your skill level. I believe it is worth the price to play. The off course facilities are excellent
Enjoyed an Unexpected Opportunity
I had heard that Dove Mountain was now offering a lot more public access. When the opportunity arose to play it in prime time I jumped on it. I recall so much about this course from the years it hosted the Accenture Match play. I knew the main challenge of this course was in the greens and all of the twisty tiers and undulations, so I chose to play the shorter yardage Yellow tees. This way I was hitting shorter irons in , as opposed to long irons or hybrids. I aimed at accessible places on the greens, not necessarily at the pins. There seems to be a lot of the room off the tee to hit the ball, so my driver got a lot of work. If you play in a conservative way, you can enjoy this course. I think if you take too many risks you will get burned. If you are a 20+ handicap, this course may not be enjoyable for you. The pace of play was about what I figured at 4:40. I am glad I got to play this course that the tour players never liked and I would play it again if I was in the Marana area.
