The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Tortolita/Wild Burro
About
The desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range provide the stunning backdrop for the three nines designed by Jack Nicklaus at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. They are played in three different 18-hole combinations, one of them being Tortolita/Wild Burro. The Tortolita nine serves as the back nine for the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Play Championship, but Nicklaus considers Wild Burro to be the best of the three. Playing through canyons and desert washes, the golf course features dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. Tortolita's third hole has the highest elevation at the club while the ninth hole on Wild Burro is the longest finishing hole of any of the nines. The intricately contoured greens and strategic fairway bunkering provide a challenge for even experienced golfers.

Absurd pin placements
2 stars might be drastic but the greens were absolutely absurd! I don't mind fast but when the greens have the most undulations in all of Tucson, and of all the courses I've ever played, and the greens are like glass, you can't put the pin placements 18 inches from the top of of a peaked ridge. 18 holes of golf with MAYBE 2-3 acceptable pin placements.
Staff was great! Conditions tee-to-green above average. But very little variety. It was like playing the same holes over and over.
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain
Dove Mountain is my favorite course to play while visiting Tucson. I try to play 2 to 3 times a year and bring a group with me on each visit. The Course is always in excellent condition and the restaurant and off course amenities are top notch. The green fees are a bit pricey but thanks to GolfNow and a little advance planning you can normally book a reasonable rate. You can expect a very challenging round of golf from any tee box you choose. I thought it odd, but, I did notice on this most recent trip that the scorecards no longer include scoring from the former PGA back tee boxes. The tee boxes are still there and maintained but your scorecard does not include them. The back PGA tees are over 8,200 yards so bring some extra balls. Ha!
Mr Nicholas unmasterpiece
What a beautiful spot in the high desert. Mr Nicholas made an unfair course for the average golfer. No wonder the pros hated the course, not the location. At $200 for 1 person to play 18 holes, it will take a thriving economy to stay open. The layout of the course is fine. The only way to make this a course a more enjoyable experience for the average golfer, would be to flatten the greens, and remove about 1/3 of the bunkers. To golfers out there who are planning to come to the Tucson area to play golf. There are 25 courses for half the money or less, and 200% more enjoyable and fun to play.
8 handicap,
Nightmare on the greens
Was excited to play Dove Mountain as I am usually when you have seen a course played by PGA tour players. Beautiful setting in the mountains of Tucson. Great practice facility and clubhouse. Typical Nicklaus layout with challenging bunkers. What wasn't typical were the greens. Absolutely the most difficult greens I have ever played. Crazy undulations and very firm and fast. I am a 5 handicap who's ball striking is the weakest part of my game but I make up for it with an exceptional short game. I could not handle these greens. They were ridiculous. Can't believe Nicklaus would put his name on this course. I should have read what your players were saying about "blowing up" these greens and refusing to play here. Sorry Dove Mountain but until you do something with those greens I won't be back.
A Mighty Course
One of the best desert courses I've played! Keep the ball in play and you have a chance to score. Hit one in the Jumping Cholla, and you'll pay the price. Greens are a definite mystery to read, try to remember the predominate break is too the valley floor regardless of what your other senses are trying to tell you. Will give this course a hearty recommendation.
Play was a little slow, but we just happened to be there on their busiest day of the year so far.
Where the pros play
This is an excellent golf course. Top condition, good greens. The pros played her for a few years in the Accenture match play. The staff has the course in shape for the pros. Here's the bad part. They should give you a towel for each player to use. They don't. Not a killer but it would've been nice. The pro came out on the 9th green before we putted out and scolded us for being 10 min behind. We were a foursome following a twosome. We were on their tales waiting for 5 holes and then they picked. It up and we laid back a bit. We never saw the group behind us! He could have Waited for us to finish #9 before he went into his rant. All in all a great time playing this tough course.
Beautiful course
This is an extremely difficult course. The greens are extremely quick and small with a lot of undulations in them. Hardly ever had a straight putt. The rest of the course and staff were excellent!! the greens were just to difficult.
Big Boy Course
I can see why this was a WGC Match Play site. Wide fairways, multiple tees and classic Jack Nicklaus greens! Fast, slick, and a ton of breaks. Not a flat spot out there! If you can hit it long, this will be your place, but play up if you can't and you'll still have a blast!
Love this coarse
I have been here several times and will keep coming back. Challenging and fun plus great weather.
Good course, no frills
Worth the discounted price of admission. Well manicured and maintained. Nice practice area included in green fee. Courteous staff. Towels and water provided in cart. They don't provide any type of memento from the course with the green fee - no ball marker, tees etc. Overall a nice course, but would not pay the full rack rate for it. Decent on-site restaurant.
A must course to play
The two courses I played at Dove Mountain were extremely challenging for an average golfer. The most difficult part of these courses are the greens. They are very fast with numerous breaks. It is very easy to see your ball roll off the green if the putt is not properly read. My recommendation is the play the courses from a yardage that you can handle. This is a PGA course built by Jack Nicklaus that plays like a champion ship track.
Must play this course! Make the trip.
Twenty seven holes of great golf. We had the course to ourselves and took our time to enjoy the magnificent scenery. Could play these courses all winter long.
Challenging Course
Wife and I played an afternoon round at a great price ($49). Played Saguaro 9 behind a corporate scramble and Wild Burro 9 all by ourselves. Great conditions, very challenging golf with undulating/fast greens. Even wife enjoyed it and she is a 27 hdcp. Go to enjoy the golf/views/experience and don't worry about your score. A par will feel like a birdie. Don't miss happy hour in the bar after. Great food/drinks and very affordable. Great sunset views as well...
Extremely challenging
Course is in great condition, wide fairways but very sloppy greens. Three puts are a norm
