Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Gorgeous Design that is in Poor Condition
This Arnold Palmer course is extremely well designed. Every hole is a challenge and each one is unique. You will use every club in your bag and need to improvise with some of them. Unfortunately, the course is in serious disrepair. All the bunkers are stone or sand/dirt that's turned to concrete and rough is way too high. This is a great shame. I can't recommend the course at all until they get their act together.
Very enjoyable
Course was in fantastic conditions, staff was friendly, the only complaint was that it played on the slow side. It is to be expected as I played 1:00 Saturday. Plan on playing there again.
Bunker mess
Starter was great and friendly. Course was in good shape but fairways we're a little thin so it almost seemed like a penalty. The real penalty was the bunkers. There is no sand in them, but plenty of rocks. No evidence that maintenance made an attempt to maintain them. Rough was uneven. Pace was ok but people think they can play from the blues and painfully that can't. Still finished in 4.5 hrs will still go back
Etiquette
Players recently taking up the game ,or those returning to it recently because of COVID ,need to familiarize themselves with golf etiquette (ready golf…allowing faster players or smaller groups to play through…consideration for others playing).Unfortunately ,inconsideration for others has become the “new normal” in everyday life.
want to play it again
I have played this course twice. It is challenging with a good layout. Very good conditions, though the bunkers are in need of attention. Spoke with the GM who explained the bi=unkers are the next priority. Will play here again
Great layout
I loved the layout of this course. Really penalized you when you hit a bad shot. The only negative would be the fact that the bunkers looked totally neglected. Not raked, footprints throughout and just not kept up. With that being said, I loved the course.
Better than expected
Really challenging hole locations, lots of water and sand so that each hole is really it’s own entity that requires its own strategy.
Awful conditions and weird layout
The bunkers are the worst I’ve ever seen…what a joke.
SLO
Cart path only and NO RANGER
5 hours and 20 minutes for 15 holes finally quit!!
Under tough conditions
Considering all the rain we’ve gotten in the last few weeks the course was in good condition and very playable. Staff was great.

Gillette Ridge is one of the best public courses in the state, as soon as you arrive the staff you meet at the bag drop, and golf shop are friendly and accommodating. The starter, Chris is also a great asset to the course. I showed up on a cloudy day, it started to rain as I got to the first tee, he offered to let me borrow his rain pullover, I thought he was joking until he pulled it off and handed it to me!
Great layout, and not an easy course, the course forces you to hit every club in the bag, and the course is always in good shape. If I didn’t live 40 minutes away, I’d play it everyday.
The staff at the bar and restaurant are also very friendly and I’ve never had a bad meal.
First time at Gillette Ridge
We went after a weeks worth of rain but I have to say the course held up extremely well minus the traps (but that’s to be expected). The staff was amazing from bartenders to the pro staff and the starter(Chris) who went above and beyond to make sure we knew the ins an outs of the course. I will definitely make my back there hopefully when it’s a little dryer. It is definitely a challenging course that makes you use all the clubs in the bag.
Poor course condition
The greens and fairways are too firm!!
Too many divots.
