Gillette Ridge

About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

16: One of my playing partners, a scratch golfer and club member, praised the quality of the three finishing holes; this is the first of them. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Tony
The pace of play was so slow. We end up with three other guys playing with us. Make us a five some and we still has to wait forever. It's ridiculous. The greens very slow and bumpy. Other than that it's nice course
One of the best public course in CT
Gillette Ridge is a must for anyone who loves golf. A very beautiful and well maintained golf course from the tee box all the way to the greens. A very challenging course, will definitely be back and would recommend this course to anyone who loves golf.
A fun but challenging course
The course is in great shape for the amount of rain it received. The bunkers on the front nine have been redone, and hopefully the back none will get done for next season. There are a few challenging holes on the course that involve hitting over water and brush. Reading the greens on a few holes was tricky. Really enjoyed playing the course and hope to return again.
Gillette ridge
The course was in excellent shape. The pace of play was good.
I have played this course several times and it is usually in great shape. Unfortunately I cannot say that currently. We traveled 2 hours to play the same 9 holes twice. There should have been a notice about that on Golf Now and there wasn't There was recent aerification but that was done almost 3 weeks prior to our arrival. Our group was not happy at all.
1/2 the course closed ALL year , poor condition
We expecting to play all 18 holes. Sign on the first tee, COURSE CLOSED. People there said the front 9 has been closed ALL YEAR. Played the back 9 twice. Traps are a disaster, no SAND and all are un-raked hard dirt. 4:55 mins. OK a public course, expected slow. It's a very challenging course in terrible condition and most players seemed like it was their first day on a golf course. Ball machine broke , so no warm up. AVOID
Worst golf experience in 20 years.
We purchased 18 holes on this 18 hole layout. We arrived and went to the driving range. Ball machine didn't work, so no warm up. Then we went to the first tee.....SIGN COURSE CLOSED !
What to do? Asked golfers hanging around and they said only the back 9 has been open so far this YEAR! 4:55 hours later we finished playing the back 9 twice. Course is in poor condition. The traps are HARD DIRT not raked. Greens were in fair condition but very slow, probably will be better in a few weeks. The place was packed with poor golfers. Mostly twosomes. The group teeing off was typical. two young guys. First guy hit two hooks 125 yards out of bounds and drooped one in the fairway. The other a slice OB left. The next hole a par 3 115 yards. one guy gets a 6 the other a 5. I know it's public course. I could put up with the 4:55 if the course was in good condition. GOLF NOW and the course did not alert us to the conditions or the closed 9.
A Chilly but Beautiful round
Bright day but blustery. Had a great time playing a brisk 18 holes. Would love to play again.
Like it but
Very challenging course but don't play until greens have recovered from aeration. Golf Now said they were aerated and be good by the 24th but they aren't. Also, GN didn't say anything about front 9 closed for trap work, traveled an hour, not good. Club pro acknowledged this and gave us his card saying he'd make it up next time we play, pro move.
Beautiful Day
We had an amazing time playing this course. The weather was windy but bright and the course was in great shape. And the critters running through were a delight to watch.
Traps had no real groomed sand, so couldn't play from them. Don't know why they weren't filled up back in March. Had to play the back nine twice as greens were being aerated. After nine holes a large group was on the 10th tee jumping in front of us. Had to get the pro shop to delay them; not sure why this happened at all when everyone was playing 18 on the back. I did enjoy a close bear encounter on Number 11 though!
Great experience and value
Playing a pro layout for 30$ is like stealing. I highly recommend the course !
First time out this season
Early signs of things growinggreens and fairways were a little bumpy. Played the back 9 holes twice because the front was being worked on.We knew that before we even booked the course and that was fine with us.
