Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Unforgiving
As a high handicapper this course is too difficult for my skill level. Ten penalty shots from lost balls demonstrates the unforgiving layout.
Use the 8 club Palmer distance rules to select the appropriate colored tee. Played white out of pride and it cost an extra ten strokes. Second nine played green tees which was appropriate for my distance level at age 72. Shaved 11 strokes with the tee change.
Highly recommend for the better golfer to challenge their skills, but not to my friends-as I want to keep them.
Awesome course
Course was in great shape- beautiful fairways -quick greens- played from white tees- not long but really challenging- playing again next week- loved this course
Great Conditions
Love playing here. Conditions today were as good as they’ve been all year. Greens nice and smooth, fairways beautiful.
September golf
Course in fantastic shape, only exception are pitch marks and divots not being repaired by inconsiderate golfers. Do not agree with the switching of the nines a few years back, the new number 9 was a classic finishing hole in my mind. Definitely will play again.
Great course but very challenging
The front nine are especially tough. My score was just ok, but I thoroughly enjoyed the very challenging course. The clubhouse was great.... great food, beer selection and service. I’d love to play it again. I had fun.
Good value, but longer tee time intervals are required
Played Gillette Ridge for the first time. The course is a good value and challenging for 40..00 with a cart but they jam too many players out to quickly and play slows to a crawl.
The layout is challenging from the Blue tees with several 400+ yd par 4's and a couple of tough Par 5's along with a couple par threes into greens well guarded by water.
The course isn't in perfect condition, but nice enough for the money and the greens were fast and true where they weren't obstructed by many, many ball marks.
Gorgeous but difficult
Absolutely beautiful course with a great staff! First time here but will def return asap to try again...got beat up and need to reddem myself.. tough greens with an awesome layout...7,8,and 9 are def able to make or break your round. Overall I'd give the course an 11 out of 10. Keel up the great work!
Course not in good shape
I don’t recommend this course. Fairways were patchy throughout. Plenty of bald spots. Also, I got soaked with sprinklers on two separate holes. Not sure why sprinklers were turned on while golfers were playing.
On the bright side, food and service in the restaurant clubhouse were very good.
Slow round
The round was over 5.5 hours for 18 holes 1 to two groups on some holes. Greens are showing they are stressed from all of the traffic . The greens are slow and covered in ballparks. Dead spots in the fairways and clover spots around the greens. Was much better earlier in the year.
Solid track
Great layout. SLOW greens but it’s been hot in CT so i get why the superintendent doesn’t want to burn the grass by cutting them a lot . Lay out is challenging and fun. forced carries and worth every penny.
Brutal Course
Nice layout, lots of forced carries. Greens have gotten better through the years, still need a little work though. They recently changed the nines around, the starter had an isdue with us starting on the wrong side, we weren't aware of the change, he wasn't very friendly. Bring los of balls!!!
Long day
I played this course today for the first time in a year. It took 5 and a half hours to play. The course was so backed up that my friend and I were forced to make a foursome with the group behind us. On every hole we had to about 15 minutes before we could hit. This was brutal!
Awesome!
Great course!
Played the black tips..., a true challenge.
Played with 2 young guys that not only played well but were perfect playing partners !!
Course conditions from T to greens were spot on.
I’ll be back !!!!
Course was great food and pro shop the same but Golf Now Sucks!!!
Outstanding
Great course well maintained tee boxes fairways and greens. Challenging holes. Senior rates are very fair considering the caliber of the course. Only flaw was we were not told that our gps watches had to be reversed because holes were reversed.
Longggg Round
If you don’t mind spending 5+ hours for no reason playing golf go here. It’s unconscionable that 18 holes can take more than 4 hours. Never mind the 5 hour nonsense that it took today. This was not the first time I’ve had a 5+ hour round at Gillette either.
Nicely Back
This course has come back nicely. A few years ago it had gone downhill but it is back in almost pristine condition. One of the best in the state for golf and for support staff.
