Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Very nice course
Very nice course and lots of fun holes.only odd thing was white tress are 5700 yards and blues were 6500 ..I played whites because 6500 yards is too far but they should have a 6000-6100 yards as whites
Wet, Cart Path only
It’s tough to charge full freight for a wet course and cart path only when you can’t walk the course. 57$.
H
for Having just opened it was great. Greens were rough but that’s to be expected in early April. My ratings will be even higher as the season moves along
Fall beauty
our foursome play the course on a Thursday afternoon very chilly but the course was in great shape a little wet here and there as you might expect given our recent weather. Very few people on the course of the pace was great greens were in excellent condition although a bit fast and hard still in great shape enjoy for the rest of the year. Restaurant staff friendly and food and bar excellent.
Disappointed
No marshall to speed up pace of play. Tee boxes were not adequately marked. Entitled, slow, terrible golfers couldn’t bother to fill divots and repair greens.
Fairways, greens and even the bunkers are in great condition
1st time playing since they reopened. Applause to the grounds staff. Fairways and greens are in great condition.
Actual greens are the same speed as the practice green-true and fast.
Can't wait to return
wet and fast greens
After multiple days of rain we played this course. The grounds crew was very apparent cutting and taking york rakes to the bunkers. They were not a constant distraction because they went against the direction of play. It did not take away from a challenging course we would love to play again.,
One of our favorite courses, but disappointed this time around.
Last year, the conditions were amazing, comparable to the nearby Wintonbury, but there has been a decline this year. Not saying the conditions are bad, but it is a noticeable decline from last year.
The pace today was absolutely awful. 5 hours. On our second time around there was an approaching T-Storm, and thunder was heard and lightning was seen, but no horn was blown. We decided to head in because it was looking really bad. We went in and got a raincheck and asked about the horn and they said you have to listen for a nearby course's horn. Really? That's dangerous!
my only disappointment was the driving practice range was not ready, everything else was good
Thunder and lightening
Things were ok until we hit the back nine and got washed out and could no longer play.
No refund was offered
More bark than bite
Played here for the first time last week. I'd heard there were many holes with forced carries so avoided it until now. Although the area has received a lot of rain recently, I found the course to be in good shape and quite playable. Although there were several holes where we needed to hit over a hazard or waste area, to reach the fairway or green, none of them were unreasonable from the white tees for this 15 handicapper. Many of the holes were visually stunning while also being quite playable. In addition, the price was much better than some other courses in the area. I would not hesitate to play here again...and soon, I hope.
Needs some organization
A challenging course that could use some organization at the start and end. We received little direction of when to tee off, and multiple groups around the first tee at the same time. Lead to back up on the course. And at the end very unclear where to leave the carts...people and carts everywhere.
Course is a challenge with many doglegs and blind shots. Fairway and greens were in pretty good condition considered the lack of rain and hot temps. However, unforgiving greens, that are small.
If you know what you're getting into, you'll have fun
Gillette Ridge is by far the harder of the two golf courses that opened in Bloomfield, Connecticut in 2004, and it has the more checkered history by far. The Arnold Palmer design is, in many ways, an acquired taste due to how punishing it can be.
The drivable par-4 13th (now the 4th, since they recently and totally nonsensically switched the nines) is one of the best holes of its kind that I've seen, but tough bunkering, forced carries and undulating greens can make for a long day at the Ridge if you're playing from the wrong tees or not on your game. But I've always appreciated it for the mental test it poses - it's a good course to play if you want to toughen yourself up as a golfer. Just be prepared to suffer a little bit.

Great course
Great course. It’s in very good condition. Challenging, but not impossible. Off course amenities were nice too.
Challenging layout ...
Always fun to play...cart is a must if you’re playing 18!
July 3rd.
Very challenging course, beautiful layout. Played front nine only. Negative comment: on a 90degree weather I noticed only one water cooler :(. Bring lots of your own water bottles.
