Challenging par-3, #8 Photo submitted by ConnieBlack on 05/26/2014
Fantastic Layout
Best layout I have played in southeast Texas. Course is fair but challenging. Tee boxes are placed to promote confidence in tee shots with very few if any forced carries over water or native areas. Fairway bunkers and green side bunkers are well placed and manicured, however I wish they would have used native sand over the shipped in white sugar sand. Greens were just recently punched so they were a little inconsistent but they are large and well designed. Pace of play was 4.5 hours, however we followed a tournament so that was to be expected. Great course to play with a group of mixed golfer abilities. High handicappers will not be excessively punished and experienced players will find the course challenging, which I think is what every course design should strive for to make the game fun for all. Pro shop and starter were friendly.
Great course
It's not easy, huge bunkers and large, slippery greens but beautiful and well kept golf course with all the amenities you would expect.
I will definitely be back.
Welll worth the drive from Houston
If only The Wilderness were a half hour closer, I would probably play it all the time. But with that said, it's certainly worth the drive if you've got a day to kill with your buddies. The layout, the natural beauty and Jeff Brauer's wonderful design make this a treat. And as an added bonus, the hospitality here is second to none. I love the rustic clubhouse, which fits the theme of The Wilderness, including the back porch, which is the perfect place to relive your round over a cold one or two. As for the course, there's a green that's 60 yards wide (Brauer knew that would be a talking point), but the course is anything but gimmicky. Just one solid hole after another.
Great course ! Wilderness is a great description! No houses abundant wildlife a superb golf experience!
Blustery day!
Wind was really up that day! Course was in great shape despite some greens work being started. Course is tree lined which helped with some coverage against the wind. Very good price point for the quality of golf that is received.
Hidden Gem
This course is a hidden gem in the coastal area near
Lake Jackson. The layout is challenging and the bunkers are plentiful. The green were very smooth and had many subtle movements. This is a course that you will definitely enjoy more your second round there.
Polite staff and nice grill.
Love this course
Staff was friendly. When we made the turn a group got in front of use. They said they were told to by the starter. After we questioned them they allowed use to play through.
Excellent golf experience
Played there the first time yesterday. This is a great course, especially for the money. Greens huge and in good shape, bunkers well cared for as are the fairways. Great layout, friendly staff, scenic and challenging, We will be back.
Great course!
Well kept, fast greens and gray staff!!!
Beautiful and Challenging
GC is about 45 minutes from my house, but well worth the drive. My wife and i love the scenic views. GC is built in the middle of a wild life preservation. There are gators and snakes so stay away from the ponds and OB lines said the starter. WE didn't see any but did see some birds and lots of rabbits. THe GC is well kept. Beautiful fairways and greens. But warning... greens are heavily undulated! Talk about two to three teir putts and 2 to 4 feet difference! Very challenging so plan your approach and chips accordingly or be ready to 3 to 4 putts! We love this challenge and will be back again!

The course was in good shape. The greens were very good. It rained about 30 minutes but the course absorbed it well. I enjoyed the round and will come back.
Great course!
I havent been golfing very long. This December marks my 2 year anniversary, but I have played just about every course in the greater Houston area and this ties with Moody Gardens as the nicest looking course (my favorite course is Vaaler in Blanco,TX). It was well manicured and all but a handful of the bunkers have been repaired from the recent dlood damage. I got a great Hot Deal through GolfNow. I highly recommend this course to everyone. I drove an hour to get there and look forward to my next visit.
first time, not last
title says it all, need 25 characters so here they are
Worth the drive...
I live in Sugar Land and I can promise this...you won't be disappointed to make the trip to The Wilderness. The staff makes you feel like you are part of a country club. Extremely friendly and helpful. The course plays long and has many tricky greens, but a truly enjoyable course.
excellent as usual
This course is amazing, for a municipal, or any other type of course. Beautiful layout, good condition except for the bunkers which they were completely rebuilding, including new drainage apparently. Friendly staff. Had the course to myself on a Wednesday afternoon!
The undulations on a couple of the greens was unreal, but very playable.
This place is a gem.
Fun at the Golf Course
This was the second time I have played since the Memorial Day weekend floods. Overall the team at the course has done a wonderful job recovering from the flood. They are still working on the bunkers; installing new drainage and sand. The greens are in remarkable shape for this time of the year. I recommend that anyone looking for a challenge and fun time play the Wilderness!
