Challenging par-3, #8 Photo submitted by ConnieBlack on 05/26/2014
Wilderness
Fairways were nice green were just cut so they were not to fast just right. Greens held the ball good u could spin it back a lil. But with mid irons in u could get about a two ball hop and stop. Will be going back had two three putts on front one for double and next one for bogey. But came back on back nine shot two under with two lip out
Best public course and best value in Texas
This is my favorite course hands-down. I love playing late in the afternoon as no crowd and deer start coming into course about 7:30. Course is pristine, grass is always lush and most holes are secluded where you can’t see any other holes. Several risk/reward holes. It is not hard but not too easy. Absolutely perfect experience each time. Marshall’s are friendly and look to help you. Kurt was amazingly nice this last Saturday. The fancy, high cost courses should be trembling in their boots as this course is better at a fraction of the price.
Terrible customer service
Terrible customer service, had 3 foursomes in front of me and sitting here waiting.
Houston Area Must Play
The Wilderness Golf Course is the 4th Jeff Brauer designed course I've played in the last month. As is characteristic of the other designs I've played, The Wilderness is a bold layout with ample fairways, solid bunkering and wild greens. This course is a must play if you're in the Houston area.
Built on a flat piece of land, The Wilderness relies on bunkering, strong greens and we'll placed water hazards to challenge the player and keep things interesting. The front 9 is the longer of the two 9s and seems a bit more challenging. The back 9 has some shorter holes and a few quirks that make for a bit more fun.
The condition of the course is solid, but not spectacular. The maintenance staff has clearly worked hard to keep the course green and playable in the Texas summer heat. There are a few burnt out spots throughout the layout, but nothing that drastically affects play.
As I've already said, the greens are wild! The 7th hole has a green that's nearly 70 yards long. The 16th green is a Biarritz design and the 2nd green is a bit of a punch bowl. Each green has character and makes you want to play it again just to see different pin placements!
If you're in the Houston area, make it a point to take the short drive to Lake Jackson and play The Wilderness! You'll be glad you did!
My favorite hole is the long par 3 16th, which has the Biarritz green. The Biarritz is one of my favorite features and I always get excited for one of these greens!

**New Favorite Course**!!!
An absolute BEAST of a course!!! A "players delight"! The greens must have been rolled in the morning because they had to running no slower than an "11" on the stempmeter. They are undulating greens so if you can't put,, you better stick your shots close...The fairways were well manicured and the bunkers were well raked. The sand is "brown crunch" but, they play well enough to not cause problems when hitting out of them. I was amazed with how the layout provides both a "tight" and, forgiving test of accurate iron play. My favorite course in the Houston area used to be The Golf Course of Houston... The "Wilderness" is my other favorite... maintenance needs to be done on 2 of the greens on the back side but, it doesn't interrupt play. The greens are big!
Hot Day Fun Day
We played at a 4:30 PM T Time, it was Super Hot but the Back 9 temperature was better almost 7 to 8 degrees less. Anyway this is Texas. I brought my friend for the first time and he loved it so much that he shot a 79 braking 80 ufff happy for him an 87 for me but I feel good.
Hidden treasure
This course is a hidden treasure. The condition of course was great. Good price for a good challenging course. Staff that we came into contact with was AWESOME!! THANKS WILDERNESS
Will play again
Friendly reception, good condition, definitely one of the better courses around.
Time tested and in Good shape
I played this course about 4 years ago. Still well maitained and lots of fun.
All around great course
Greens were impeccable, and the course is fantastically laid out and in great overall shape. Enjoyed every minute. Will return without a doubt.
Fun course
Course is in great condition. Greens are putting great and not too fast. Every time I play this course I like it more
Nice Course
First time playing Wilderness, and was impressed with the layout and conditioning. Play was a tad slow, and never saw a ranger, but the beverage cart regularly passed by. Lot's of trees, and some water hazards, but a very fair test. The undulation on some of the greens is pretty crazy, but kinda fun for something different. With not many choices in this area, Wilderness is a hidden gem!
Great course
Course was in great shape, greens were fast. First time playing, won't be my last.
