Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Very poor maintenance
There’s a reason why it’s cheap. Good layout. Poor grounds maintenance
Fairways and Rough Bare spots
Many many bare spots in Fairway and Rough areas. Greens were good condition. Fairways were very poor. Rough areas are very poor. Obviously all the $$ goes to Sterling CC. Would not recommend this course.
Beautiful course
Course layout is perfect, and the staff is professional.
Poor course condition
First time play here. Course fairway is the worst conditions I ever seen. There are barely any grass, if you like to hit off dirt, this is the course for you. Zero maintenance.
Great layout, Great Greens, Bad Fairways
Played after a big storm so take it with a grain of salt. Love the layout, Greens were fantastic, fairways need some work but overall I liked it. Good challenges on some holes and it forces you to control your distances off the tee.
not worth it!
Unfortunately this course has been neglected and in a terrible shape. More often than not you will find yourself hitting off of mud or dirt.
Bunkers are full of water to the point that if you're ball goes in, it will be hard to get it out again.
The greens were decent but nothing I would brag about.
Conditions
The course was in the worst condition I've ever seen it. I would not play it again until they improve the conditions
Good to get out there
A nice stretch of weather drew me out to my favorite course. I’m partial to the links style and the way the two finishing holes are designed around the creek is just amazing. Greens were in surprisingly good shape considering the hard freezes the area went through. Fairways have a ways to go considering the clay soil and San Augustine grass being in hibernation. Preferred lies are the way to go around the clumps. The guys in the cart barn are cheerfully friendly. Number seven par 3 white tee into the wind was a bit too far for this 73 year old but that’s a me problem and I was enjoying teeing off with Justin my playing partner.
Soggy but greens still rolling
Unlike drought conditions the ball checks up on the fairways however the greens still roll well
Nice layout, poor shape
Torn with this review because this place could really be something. Staff was excellent. Clubhouse and amenities were excellent. Range was nice and course layout was fun and challenging. However the condition was poor. I get the time of year but have a feeling this is the norm. With some TLC this could really be a great place to play. Glad we got it on a hot deal because it certainly is not worth the full price in this condition. Maybe try it again this summer and see if anything is different.
Great layout but not in great shape
The layout is challenging and one of those courses where you can't use your driver on every par 4 or par 5. Lots of elevation changes that lead to tough lies. But the fairways have lots of bald spots. Could be much better considering the price. Sterling the private side looks amazing.
Been awhile
Six long months since playing my favorite course, I just had to get out there and break in my golf shoes.
My hot deal paired me up with another single and a pair…all younger golfers who could hit it a mile. It was a good group, I actually played better than I expected after a long layoff…I tend to elevate my game when playing along with better golfers. Didn’t lose a single ball. The greens were fast. Fairways in good shape. Only negative was the club house was closed but the Sterling clubhouse was more than adequate.
