About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Great greens, not so great fairways.
Course was fun to play! I was impressed with the greens, but the fairways left a lot to be desired. If you can get the greens in that kind of shape I would expect the fairways to be much better.

Course needs improvement
Fairways are in dismal conditions and are as hard as cart path, you’ll get 30-50 yard roll. Greens are in good shape but overall enjoyment is lost when hitting your approach or pitches.Hopefully in the next few months, course conditions will improve. Course is not worth $50 tee time

Review Feedback Is Disingenuous
Retiree here, routinely playing public courses twice a week. HOU NAT'L had been a longtime fave. In addition to being reasonably convenient for me, it had/has an interesting layout. It WAS also reasonably priced at one time. But COVID-19 set in; and like other public courses, the conditions immediately went downhill due to lack of care - while tee-times and PRICES actually increased. The extraordinary downside for this particular course is that its design lends itself to becoming hardpan, throughout, in the MIDDLE OF THE FAIRWAYS. And, yes, like one reviewer noted, an accurate drive will get extra roll. But then there's your NEXT shot... off hardpan... all day long. They did maintain the greens to a reasonable degree. I periodically check current reviews to see if the general course conditions have improved - and obviously they have not. Which is bad enough. But the occasional all-5-star reviews are laughable, especially regarding course conditions and value. But much worse are the completely disingenuous replies from HOU NAT'L, excusing the current course conditions on the recent drought conditions. The lack of course maintenance has been going on since roughly March of 2020, when COVID-19 took root. I REALLY wish they'd bring back maintaining the fairways. After staying away for quite sometime, I ventured back in March of 2023 - only to be discouraged by the course conditions (still), the off-kilter pricing, and the misleading positive reviews and faux excuses.

Went down hill
All the short game areas were closed, putting was setup for a kids clinic but there were no other places to putt and the short game chipping area was closed and the mats mats on the range were like hitting off concrete. For the course it was dirt fairways with little to no grass. The greens on the other hand were green and rolling well. Should have played somewhere else

Good shape considering Weather
Course is dry, so I can’t knock the course because the weather we have been having in Texas but the Greens were in Great shape, able to hit and stay.. Great Value, this is my go to course!

We need some rain!!!
The course is suffering from the effects of heat and drought we have in Houston. Fairways pretty dried out’ but the greens were in great shape. Pace of play was sorta slow due to a foursome a few groups ahead of us. Marshall should have sped them up.

booked two tee times & then had a friend wanting to join in so i called into the pro shop & then said it’s wide open so i could just book another tee time close to it. me and my second player showed up but the third couldn’t make it due to car issues. i told pro shop and they were not helpful at all and wouldn’t budge on giving me any type of credit or refund or anything. it was really annoying mostly cause the course was absolutely awful, definitely the worst i’ve played in the greater houston area over the past several years & it’s extremely overpriced.
fairways are hard as concrete, sand bunkers are uneven & also partially super hard and partially wet.
the maintenance staff was on the green while we were taking approach shots, three different times.
there was no cartgirl, and no water in the water buckets that were spread out amongst the course.

Not Handling Drought Conditions
This course is not handling this summer’s drought conditions as well as other golf courses in the area. It’s too bad, because this has been a great place to play golf in the past.

Greens are in really solid shape. Fairways certainly need some TLC but overall not bad for the price.

Back after nine month hiatus
The clubhouse has been refurbished and looks great. The greens were understandably slow as they need protection from the searing summer heat…but rolled true and I sank a 25 footer on 14 for a birdie off the fringe. The fairway on 2 has been stressed so it’s cart path only on the long par five dog leg. This makes it tough on senior players in the heat walking to and from the ball to the cart…also slow.

Course was basically dead. Most fairway shots are from bare dirt or dead grass. Dust clouds every time your ball hits the ground. This includes the greens.

Solid course
Fairways could really use a nice watering but the greens were great. Great pace. Small complaint is that there are houses surrounding a ton of the holes. Hoping they will give the fairways some love but will play again. The full rate of $80 would seem a bit high for this course though.
