Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

not worth it!
Unfortunately this course has been neglected and in a terrible shape. More often than not you will find yourself hitting off of mud or dirt.
Bunkers are full of water to the point that if you're ball goes in, it will be hard to get it out again.
The greens were decent but nothing I would brag about.
Conditions
The course was in the worst condition I've ever seen it. I would not play it again until they improve the conditions
Good to get out there
A nice stretch of weather drew me out to my favorite course. I’m partial to the links style and the way the two finishing holes are designed around the creek is just amazing. Greens were in surprisingly good shape considering the hard freezes the area went through. Fairways have a ways to go considering the clay soil and San Augustine grass being in hibernation. Preferred lies are the way to go around the clumps. The guys in the cart barn are cheerfully friendly. Number seven par 3 white tee into the wind was a bit too far for this 73 year old but that’s a me problem and I was enjoying teeing off with Justin my playing partner.
Soggy but greens still rolling
Unlike drought conditions the ball checks up on the fairways however the greens still roll well
Nice layout, poor shape
Torn with this review because this place could really be something. Staff was excellent. Clubhouse and amenities were excellent. Range was nice and course layout was fun and challenging. However the condition was poor. I get the time of year but have a feeling this is the norm. With some TLC this could really be a great place to play. Glad we got it on a hot deal because it certainly is not worth the full price in this condition. Maybe try it again this summer and see if anything is different.
Great layout but not in great shape
The layout is challenging and one of those courses where you can't use your driver on every par 4 or par 5. Lots of elevation changes that lead to tough lies. But the fairways have lots of bald spots. Could be much better considering the price. Sterling the private side looks amazing.
Been awhile
Six long months since playing my favorite course, I just had to get out there and break in my golf shoes.
My hot deal paired me up with another single and a pair…all younger golfers who could hit it a mile. It was a good group, I actually played better than I expected after a long layoff…I tend to elevate my game when playing along with better golfers. Didn’t lose a single ball. The greens were fast. Fairways in good shape. Only negative was the club house was closed but the Sterling clubhouse was more than adequate.
Fairways are in Terrible shape, it’s evident all the funds and work is going into the Sterling course. Greens are decent but large dirt patches on all fairways is terrible.
Bait and switch
I made a reservation on golf now for Houston National golf course for Jan 1st for $64 to pay at the course. I was charged a booking fee. Upon check in the course required $84 rate as stated because it’s a holiday and golfnow must not be updated. When I showed the clubhouse my golfnow receipt and $64 rate, I was told that the $64 just held a reservation and that I wasn’t charged yet. I wasn’t charged yet, but what was advertised was switched once I got to the course. Can you please let me know if this is how it should work?
Houston National Course
The course was in good shape with some dirt spots. Staff and course personnel were friendly and nice.
Better bang for your buck out there.
The only reason I'm giving it a two is because the green was in good shape, and the course has a fun layout. The course is in serious need of some TLC. The fairways were beaten down and bare patches all over. The pace of play was good for the first three holes, then it went to 20min a hole. Five hours to get through the round, waiting 15-20min per hole to hit. I won't drive the hour from Pearland to come back. Golf pro forgot to give me a key to the cart after I paid.
Meh
Super slow pace of play, didnt see a single marshal, no beverage cart and zero carts available when our tee time was scheduled. The staff had to chase golfers down in the parking lot to round them up.
Value is decent for the course quality, I would only play here as a last resort until staffing changes get cleaned up.
Extremely Slow
Pace was extremely slow, and the condition of the course was not good. Wouldn't recommend nor will I return. Can play a nicer course with better pace for less money

Greens are great, fairways…
First time playing out there, and overall had a good time. Course is challenging (at least to me) with some slight elevation changes and holes requiring smart shots. Greens were all in good shape, with some tough reads.
The fairways definitely need some work. A few times it was hard to know what was fairway and what wasn’t.
Overall, good value and enjoyed the course. Hopefully the winter will help the fairways come back.
