About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Not the same quality
Lots of dirt patches and dry water runoff areas off the fairway, if you look at Sterling course as you finish 9 you can see a big difference in the quality between public and members course, makes you wonder at these prices

Getting better
The course benefited from a lot of rain lately which is helping the new sod. Rain also filled up a lot of the traps so they were mostly unplayable, but will come back. Pace of play on the front nine was excellent, back slowed a bit but okay.

Are you a mosquito? If so, great place to be
Course has an interesting layout, but there is a significant amount of standing water (not just small puddles, some of them are almost water features with 6+ inches of depth) in almost every single bunker. Also, the greens were punched and there was no warning from the staff when booking. There were both large dirt patches and large puddles, sometimes within feet of each other (somehow).

Gone downhill
Played here many times before but never seen it in such bad condition. And they are still charging almost $50 for senior in this condition? You know they can keep it in better condition because you can look over at the membership course Sterling and see what better shape it is in. Cross off my list of returning any time soon.

Disappointing
Not sure where to begin, but in short…SAVE YOUR MONEY! This course is no where near worth $80 per round, even if it is a weekend. The previous night’s rain didn’t help, but no one bothered to tell us that the greens were freshly aerated and at best patchy. Because of the rain, it was cart patch only, but the fairways are so barren it’s hard to distinguish where not to drive. The staff wasn’t overly friendly, no beverage cart service, no Marshall’s visible, and their “meal deal” missed the mark because they were out of hamburgers and the second choice hotdogs were cold. Very disappointing….won’t be back.

Wonderful if you like playing on dirt
With a name like Houston National and the obviously outdated pictures this looked like a great place to play. However, it is not that great. Some of the hole layouts were cool, but the fairways are in atrocious shape . We started hitting out of the fairways just so we could play off of grass. Greens are unpredictable not sure what kind of grass they used but some are as speedy as a PGA course yet others you have to Texas wedge it to move your ball. Place needs a lot of help

Layout, condition, price, atmosphere far better than overpriced “pony” course nearby.

Good overall
I loved this course.
The layout is excellent and the elevated greens adds and extra layer of difficulty that sneaks up on you.
Only concern this time around was course conditions. There were numerous dry/dead spots along just about every hole. Apparently, construction on hole 9 changes the layout but we were not told about it at the clubhouse.
Overall, this is still probably my favorite course in the area.
