About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Slow
At one point I counted over 10 carts, 4 groups at one hole. Way over booked. Five and a half hours and didn’t even finish. Marshall was useless. Won’t go back.
6 Hours round
We play as a foursome and were allowed to start earlier than the scheduled tee time. There were a foursome and a five some in front of us so we have to wait almost every hole while the five some had two holes clear in front of them. They did not allow us to play thru. This course use to be nice all around. Now the fairways need a lot of work as well as the green but they still charging $74.00 for around...Just amazing. No marshal on the course ....I still like to come back if some of these issues are resolved

Not going to play again
Course conditions are horrible. Never going to play again. Waste of money.

Love this Course.
This course has been one of my favorites in Houston for some time. I think because of the drought last year maybe, the turf needs some time and work to come back, but the course layout and the staff both are some of my favorites in Houston.

Just ok
This was my first time playing here with my father who was visiting from out of state and I was kind of disappointed. The pictures shown are from the other course at this location which looked beautiful but also private. Houston National was messy with a lot of broken tees on every box, lots of dry dirt patches and ball marks on every green. The course layout was actually decent and the last 3 holes are very challenging but overall I don’t think I will go back there unfortunately.

First time played in a quite awhile
HOU NAT'L use to be a regular on my schedule as a retiree. Interesting, fun track layout. But then COVID-19 hit and all public courses around chose to cut expenses (ignore the course conditions, especially bunkers), while "out-of-work" golfers filled up the tee-times. HOU NAT'L was by far and away the worst, also raising their fees. Their fairways became hardpan. Bunkers completely ignored - didn't even pretend to make them look useable. Lakes where they weren't suppose to be. But I decided to try it yesterday - ONLY because of a G/N Hot Deal AND a discount on top of that. The weather has been helping general course conditions the past couple of weeks, and this one was no exception. The greens weren't horrible. Nice golf carts. I fully expected to come back with a one-star review; but it was borderline 3-stars, more like 2 1/2. Will I go back soon? Would I recommend it to others? That's a no - at their ridiculously high rates for the course conditions. I truly hope they bring it back to pre-COVID conditions.

Pace of play was absolutely horrible
It took me and my partner 5 hours. The pace was horrible I never knew that people joining a group could make it slower. We played the front nine in 2 hours with two groups of 2 in front of us then on the back nine those 2 groups joined up and made for a 3 hour back nine which is insane with us waiting almost 15-20 min to tee off each hole. Their was no marshal nor starter driving around to see the pace. And ten minutes per tee time is not long enough.

What a disgrace
What a disgrace and embarrassment. I just moved to Cypress Texas from NYC and my parents came to visit and I played here with my 75 yr old father and this course is horrible!!
This course should be closed. I was embarrassed. Huge craters on the fairways, rotted out steps on the high tee boxes. To many complaints and issues to list but my 75 yr old father who has been playing golf since he was 15 yrs old said amd I quote
“ that’s the worst course I have ever played … PERIOD !!!

Fairways aerated
The fairways were recently aerated leaving some bad lies, but otherwise in good conditon. Pace of play was excellent and weather perfecto.

Winter recovery
The tee boxes and greens were ok, but the fairways were pretty rough. They have started aerating, so in a month it will be fine.

Another fun round at Hou Nat
My buddy and I had a great time but we are curious about something. These are the hardest fairways we've ever played... they are some kind of firm. Great for roll out, but why does the course mow them so low when the ground is so hard? It's almost like playing shots off of hard pan when your in the fairway! I guess there are blade types that can knife through this stuff but for the 95% of us with a little bounce on our irons it really makes it tough. It was actually easier hitting out of the rough most the time. Why not raise the mower a fraction of an inch and make it more fun. It would also make the fairways more drought resistant and stand up to cart traffic better. Anyway, still had fun and will be coming back.

Does anyone know...
Why would a course that has rock hard fairways mow them at bikini wax levels so that every shot is effectively played off hard pan? I realize perfect strikers with their knife blade irons can play these shots, but 95% of the players on this course do not fit that category. I guess it just makes too much sense to raise the mower blades a fraction of an inch and make this course more fun for everyone.
PS It also makes the course more maintainable, more resistant to drought, disease, weeds etc... funny how all the other courses we play seem to understand this.

Not worth the money
Course needs major overhaul for even $70.00 Greens on bad shape. Bumpers had no rakes and were hard. No coolers for carts given if you don’t play Sterling which is the private course.

Course condition negates many course positives
Many good things about this course (staff friendliness, off course amenities, pace of play, course layout) but course conditions are poor bringing the overall rating and value for the money down.
