Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Pure neglect
I'm not sure why they've completely neglected this course but charging almost 100 is price gouging to say the least. There's soo many other options in the area that actually mow grass and rake their bunkers.
I've complained about the bunkers being unplayable for months and not 1 bunker in all 18 holes is playable which absolutely disgusts me. They look like the course has been closed for over a year with weeds actually growing in the bunkers, I mean absolute neglect. But to be overcharged was the icing on the cake and why I'm compelled for a next day review. The only saving grace, the greens roll good, not great. You would not have 1 member on your private course and I'm more than sure they have sand in bunkers and raked daily which is normal. Our group lost or had a very hard time finding balls in play, just off the fairway. The grass in some areas that are bone dry hasn't been mowed in months. The rough probably hasn't been mowed in several weeks and the crab grass is everywhere because of the neglect, just collecting money.
The Houston national side is a disgrace and someone needs to be removed. I'll stop by to practice as range and practice area is good. I'm sorry but someone needs to be fired
Tough little cookie.
I'm new to golf but have played a few courses now and this was by far the most challenging yet. Rolling hills, tricky greens, gaps and rivers galore. I probably lost 10 balls while I was there. 1-2 is normal for me.
The only weird thing that I noticed was that one of the bunkers was just a concrete bowl, but it could have just been under maintenance.
Needs a lot of work
HN has been one of my favorite local courses, but when Cypress Creek closed they almost doubled their prices. For that, we get really nice new carts with GPS, however they are restricted and we can no longer take them to the car to load/unload. What we didn't get were halfway decent fairways (full of weeds) and playable sand traps (full of water and murk). Per usual the greens are 1st class. So for the time being I'm taking HN off my rotation,
Course is great other than one thing
The course was fantastic staff is friendly and wasn’t too busy. Perfect almost all the way through. The one thing I think would make it 10x better is if the fairway was cleaned up regarding weeds in some locations. It wasn’t terrible but it could have been a little better in some spots and the bunkers need to be redone it’s hard as a rock in there right now but that could be due to the recent rains.
Other than that it was fantastic. Small things would make it a GREAT course for the value
Poor condition ground keeping
sand traps were unplayable.
grass cuttings too thick to locate golf ball.
Leaves you with a bunch of Questions
Start off by saying staff is super nice and very accommodating. Helpful at every turn, even at the end of the round when getting the burger, chips and drink. Bar staff was great.
Now the bad. The fairway was in rough shape lots of holes. Weeds grass missing and just not in great shape. Makes you wonder if the private course is in better shape??? Then bunkers are 90 percent all about compacted and need some good TLC. Some of the areas in the course are pretty rough.
Finally the greens are great as well as the tee box. No fungus or rough shape ones all pretty good. I just think with a little investment in the fairways the course would be excellent.
Price Increase / New Cart Malfunctions / Crab Grass
In recent weeks the price to play has more than doubled. With the new carts, this can be expected. Unfortunately the restrictions to mobility and cart malfunctions make it difficult to justify the cost. The functionality of the cart was sketchy throughout the round. At the end of the round, the cart got stuck in the tuneI beneath Queenston Blvd. We had to pack up and walk back to the clubhouse. In addition, the crab grass around the greens is out of hand and the traps need sand. It’s currently not the place to work on your short game.
Course is the best value in the Houston area
Best value in Houston. Greens were rolling great and the layout is always a challenger. Fairways need some tending but that’s just a small fix compared to the positives this course has.
Sub Average Day
$100 got you a round on rough fairways, bumpy greens and sandy tee boxes. But they threw in a burger and draft beer so hey I guess it was worth it.
Improvements Happening
I'll start by saying (I think) the price has gone up here. Not uncommon these days but I'll also give credit to Houston National for having a fleet of brand new carts with GPS and some better grass in the fairways. In the past there have been plenty of noticable dead/dirt spots in the fairway and while they're not completely gone, it definitely seemed better this time around. It's a unique course for Houston that I enjoy playing and their lunch/drink deal which is included with the green fee remains a great perk.
Greens great. Rest of course in good shape.
Pro shop staff okay. Pace of play a little slow.
Had a good time
Little disappointed
The course was not as well maintained as I would have expected. Lots of bear patches on the fairways and the greens were not in the best shape. The new carts were nice but the restriction features of where you can go left us stranded coming out the tunnel between 17 and 18. Had to wait 10 mins to be rescued.
Punched greens after paying
Played this past Sunday and greens punched probably 1-2 days prior. No notification about the greens or discount which seems fair during punching the greens. Just like previous review, All bunkers should be raked daily and for goodness sakes, add more sand. I hate the excuse it rains when I'm from Florida. We have way more rain and our bunkers just about anywhere you go have sand, not washout and months of neglect... Most courses in the area are the same way so not just picking on Houston National.
Crabgrass is getting out of control around the greens and tee boxes.
The layout and fairways are decent. They always have number 2 and 9 as cart path only and you'll be hard pressed to find a puddle on either hole so when it's hot, you feel it. I play here because it's close to my house. The best take away is round came with a drink and hamburger or hotdog at the turn.
I would've given a 4 star but not being transparent during airifying is a huge letdown.pIt's priced about 20.00 too high but still good to work on your game with little expectations tee to green.
New carts
New fleet of golf carts. They had several bugs with the gps and locking out from some road crossing. Hopefully they do not increase rates too much
New Carts
They have brand new carts with the geofencing now. The course was in good shape even with the greens being punched a few days ago.
Pace was great on the front (2hrs) and we ran into a bottleneck on the back so it got really slow.
Still working out kinks in the geofencing. If it loses you in a tunnel it makes you back up. Had to wait for 2 groups ahead to figure out how to get carts unstuck, and wound up pushing ours through the tunnel instead of backing out.

agreed, played there last week and course was AWFUL FOR $89!!! sand traps were full of weeds, standing water, fungus. Fairways were sparse and hard. Good thing they bought new carts so they could raise their rates. I can't see paying this much to play an unkept course in the future.
