About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Good Condition considering the Heat
Fairways were expected to be fast but the fringe and green areas were great. Houston National has done a good job maintaining the course during this Summer.

Pace of play great

Water, please.
I have played this course numerous times over the years. The first time I played it years ago almost wast the last for me because there was no grass on many of the fairways. If they are not careful, that may happen again. I know we are in a period of hot dry weather but the fairways need attention. I wonder if it is a soil issue that wasn't addressed during construction. I am also aware that water is one of the most expensive parts of maintaining a golf course. That said, the greens are in good shape and putted nicely as it appears they are getting the attention they need. The rest of the course needs the same attention. I know fertilizer is through the roof but so are green fees.
I was pleased to see they held a drive, chip and putt event for the kids and that is an awesome thing to bring youngsters into the game. I just hope they will be able to afford to play the dwindling number of golf courses that survive the idiocy of the elitists that are currently ruining our country.

Good condition for scorching summer
Greens rolled good and were in good shape. Of course there are dry spots on the fairways but worth the price for a hot deal. Carts are very nice at least so that’s a plus. Some sand traps have solid rock and stone. Overall would play again.

Dry dry dry
Haven't played it in 2-3 years for the reason I stated. No fairway grass still. Still hitting off dirt. Could be a great course if they grew some real grass.

This course was in great shape overall. I saw one bare patch on the 16th hole.

Fun layout - horrible conditions
The fairways were absolutely horrendous. There were fairway bunkers that had literal concrete in them and no sand at all. This place felt like you were playing at a municipal course for $20. I am highly disappointed as this course used to be in tip top shape and has lots of potential.

Water the fairways
Round was really good, greens rolled pretty good after noticing that they have been aerated a little while ago. Course was in pretty good shape but as the temps are starting to climb I noticed some dry spots already and suggest more watering especially in the fairways! Hey if you miss the fairway you gotta pay the price but if your ball is in the fairway I don’t wanna be penalized because the grass is burnt and the ground is hard. Bree the cart girl was fantastic, very nice and saw her 4 times during the round on an extremely hot day and she was as nice the 4th time we saw her as she was the 1st and it was pushing 100 degrees!

No marshal enforcing pace of play. One Par five on the front side had 5 groups backed up. We ran in to a group with 6 players on the back side. Fun course and short drive from center of Houston, but 5 hour round will prevent return.

Fun round
All was good except the course needs more distance markers from the fairway.
A 150 yard marker would help, a lot..

Better late than never
I was held up by construction and arrived late for my tee time. No problem, they readily accommodated me, gave me the ok to tee off after the next group. The course was in great shape…I putted so well on the smooth greens. It’s also great to have ice readily available in the clubhouse…even fresh popcorn which is a great way to stay hydrated. Fun shing holes into the wind…always a challenge.
