Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Goat patch
They’ve really let this place go downhill. Either fix the fairways and bunkers or put yourself out of your misery and just close it. If it hadn’t been for the phenomenal greens, I’d give it a 1 star overall. Great layout so it’s really a shame to let this course go so bad. They are not watering the fairways much at all. Bunkers, awful. The fairways are as hard as concrete and too short for the amount of water they receive. Greens, fantastic but other than the layout, it’s the only thing worth talking about. Put it this way, I got a hot deal for $45 and I still think I paid too much. Move on
Sent me out as a single with two foursomes in front, unreal
Don’t understand why I would be sent alone at 0940 t-time, two or more foursomes in front, they did not offer a pass even when I was waiting on the same t-box. Unreal
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us, NavyGunner. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Houston National Golf Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Needs some TLC
The fairways need some serious work, be prepared to hit off hard pan / dirt in the middle of the fairway. The sand traps are garbage and not very well taken care of or washed out.
The greens are in good shape.
The course should be better taken care for the price they charge.
Thank you for your review, slojek. We will pass along your positive experience and feedback to our team at Houston National Golf Club. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Slow play
The course needs a Marshall as we were stuck behind a twosome holding up everyone behind them. 4-1/2 hours is too long and the course was wide open in front of them!
Course played well but lack of rain getting us again. Greens in great shape and fast!
Hello, u000001534634. Thanks so much for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed your round at Houston National Golf Club. That's what we like to hear! We hope to see you again soon!
Really enjoyed the round!
This was my first time playing here and we really enjoyed the overall experience. The greens and tee boxes were in excellent shape. As were the golf carts. The driving range is mostly dirt, which was not very attractive, but didn't really affect our warm-up. The putting green was in great shape and similar to the greens on the course. The fairways are a links style - not many trees in play and lots of large mounds/dunes lining one or both sides of most fairways. Most of the bunkers were in fair or poor condition, but thankfully we didn't get in many so it didn't affect our play much. The fairways were in OK shape with some bare spots. It seems they spend most of their time, money & water taking care of the greens and tee boxes and less on the fairways. That said, it didn't affect our play or experience significantly ... mostly just looked dry and hard instead of lush and green.
We didn't realize that this location actually has two courses ... Houston National which is public and Sterling Country Club which is private ... that share common club house, pro shop, range, and golf cart facilities. We had the course mostly to ourselves with an 11am tee-time on a Tuesday, so the overall experience was very relaxed and enjoyable. I'll be back again in the future, maybe after some rainfall greens up the fairways.

Like the old Houston National
I hadn't played Houston National in a couple years because they had let it go downhill and increased prices since opening Sterling.
Well, they're doing something right. I took a chance an booked and had a great time on the course I remembered when I first started playing there 10 years ago.
Not a $70 course maybe, but it's a nice layout and in fine condition. The greens are stellar.
Thank you for taking the time to review us, jmaximusmax. Your feedback is valuable, and we look forward to delivering you excellent service again soon. Houston National Golf Club thanks you!
Worth the 45 minute trip
In these inflationary times, it’s good that you can still find such value on such a fun links style course. Every hole is a challenge with shotmaking rewarded. Greens fees are half what you pay on a comparable layout. Staff is friendly and will work with you on ordering that cheeseburger and a beer for a stop in that cool clubhouse at the turn.
Thanks so much for the great review, u8860059. We look forward to welcoming you back to our course soon. Thanks for choosing Houston National Golf Club.
Challenging course with nice greens but hard fairways
This was my first time to play here. With a name like Houston National I figured let's try it. Also figuring cooler temps and all the recent rains would provide a nice environment for golf. Unfortunately, this is a typical public golf course. Greens
held and rolled nicely but the fairways were hard with many bare spots on them It was far from lush as hoped. Teeoff got me a $15 discount ($55) but full
price ($70) got you a beer, chips and hamburger. Beers we're cheap enough on the course. No price
gouging there.

Hot with light winds no problem.
The long par 5 number 12 got me as I found the bunker left of the green on my 4th…my lone double bogey. Otherwise I managed to stay out of trouble. This is the course to play when temps hit 97 with 104 heat. There’s always a cooler full of ice in the clubhouse with ice water next to it. Putts rolled true.

Number 13 got me
My white tee was in the back hitting into a northeast wind. A short drive was made worse when my second failed to clear a large bunker. Result was a double bogey. So I moved up to the forward tees which netted me plus two over the last five…playing it forward works. Greens were superb, fairways had plenty of roll out. Clubhouse and pro shop are outstanding.

Average at best
While the cost of our round was not what I would consider premium, it was high enough where I expected more from the course. I realize that we have had a lot of rain in the area, but my experience on the course was poor. The bunkers were unplayable by any stretch of the imagination. The upkeep on the course was marginal at best on some holes and poor on the vast majority. Disappointed and will not return.

Nice layout and greens.
Need to spend some time and effort on the traps...not one was playable. Fairways and greens were good. Rough hasn't been mowed in a while, but shouldn't be there anyway. Overall the course is challenging, just need to work on the traps.
Did notice the Sterling CC course traps were well maintained. Maybe they could send those guys to the National course.
Steve6073009, thanks for the amazing review and for choosing Houston National Golf Club. We hope to see you again soon!

Course maintenance
The layout is nice, the staff was nice and helpful.....need to get the maintenance staff to spend some time on the traps and mowing.
Looks like they are spending all their time on the members course and neglecting the other.
Greens where fast and responsive.....well done there.
