Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Fun Layout
Could be in a bit better shape but greens were real nice. Challenging layout. Good value on hot deal. Will be back.
Full package
Fun course, fee comes with a cold beer and food at the turn.
Go play
Someone mentioned this before but it's a true country club feel, Men's lockeroom includes shower's which is very nice after a hot sweaty round. Greens rolling well only complaint, bunkers. I was in left bunker on 9 Green side and hit over flag info water because it was concrete, hardpan. Bunkers are hard enough and I've been playing 30+ years, get sand in them please.
Driving range and putting green very nice but chipping was only allowed back of range very far away. I appreciated the water throughout course 👍
Get out and enjoy this course
Great great course for the value
At Houston national you get a county club feeling without the country club price. When you book a tee time you get a free meal and free range balls. The course I would say is fairly easy with little water but the hilly terrain provides some challenge. The holes were well kept in all areas except the bunkers which need work and the parts of the fairway were carts get on and off. Overall great course.
Pretty solid course!
Check-in was super easy. Range balls were included along with a meal at "The Deck" for each person in the group (hot dog or hamburger with chips and a beer). Carts and range were right outside, easy to access. The front half, there was a group that was playing as an eightsome that was slowing the rest of the course down. By around the turn the marshall came by and split them up. Other than a few recently-aerated bunkers, the only thing that really annoyed me was the last 4-5 holes of the back half were THICK with mosquitos. Altogether a solid course and we'll be back (with bugspray).
Traps were being worked on after all tje heavy rain.
Greens were excellent
Rain Residual at Houston National
Houston just went through a cycle of storms ranging from 6”-12” of rain with surface flooding, including Houston National. I played on the first day after these rains, cart path only, and found the course in fairly good shape, except for standing water in most sand traps. Greens were dry and firm, fairways were largely drained as were tee boxes (still patchy grass in a few areas). Played ‘winter rules’ of pick up & clean balls, so enjoyed the grassy fairways & challenging greens on a windy afternoon.
Happily Suprised
I’ve played here multiple times and never would’ve given it more than two stars or paid over $40 before, and probably never would’ve played here again: the fairways and greens were always dry dirt (look up the google maps overview), but this was the only course that a buddy and I could find last second for a Saturday morning.
Playing yesterday was a complete 180 from the past. I’m sure all the rain helped but there’s clearly been a conscious effort to fix up the course. Every fairway was green, and the greens were all healthy and rolling true.
The only hiccup was the pace of play on the last 5-6 holes. There was a very slow moving 4some that did not seem to care about the groups behind them.
The one thing this course has always done is include free range balls and a free hot dog + beer with your round. They’re one of the few courses that actually does it right. It’s ridiculous that range balls aren’t included with every round everywhere. I will definitely be back soon.
Changeling Course
So many bunker and undulation make your score lower. But funny and challenging course I never experienced.
Horrible Condition
It's clear that this layout was once a great venue. Unfortunately - fairways were overtaken with weeds and hundreds of sandy, non-grassy blemishes. Very sad. Clearly - this course needs new ownership with a commitment to restoring and maintaining this great layout to its potential. Not worth playing for any amount of money. For the record - this is my first time ever writing a review - that's how bad this was.
Poor shape
Course was in rough shape and pace of play was 5 hours. No marshall to keep play on pace. Won’t go back.
Left after # 12
Pace on back was terrible-was going to be 3 hrs+ to play back but that’s unacceptable..so we left as did the group behind us.. How about sending a ranger out?
Never again!!!
Ain’t comin back
Teed off at 11…front was slow, 2hours, but it took almost hour to play 10-12..we left. Not into a 3 hour back nine..no ranger —upon leaving we came across problem..4 some that was over 2 holes behind—again, no ranger..group behind us left as well..
So Houston, you’re going to allow one slow group ruin it for several other groups???
Not a great business model…
