Hill Country Golf Club - Lakes/Oaks
About
Hill Country Golf Club offers three nines, all of which sprawl across 200 scenic acres of Texas Hill Country. The terrain is provided with rolling meadows and steep hillsides dotted with tranquil lakes and ponds that come into play throughout the 27 holes. The Lakes Nine is obviously characterized by the clear blue lakes that come into play throughout the course. There are also wooded ravines and strategically placed bunkers throughout the course for even more challenges. The Oaks Nine is named for the towering oaks that blanket the course. From wooded ravines to tree-lined fairways, this nine is a demanding test of accuracy. There are strategically placed bunkers and water comes into play on a few holes. The courses, which were designed by well-known architectural firm Arthur Hill & Associates, have received praise from both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

Creek Course #9 Photo submitted by GreerGolf on 06/06/2017
Construction OnGoing
I knew it going in, but the construction going on really is putting the damper on the whole course. Shortened fairways and temporary greens make it a little difficult to fully enjoy. Would play again if the green fee was more reasonable to accommodate for the noise, construction, and temporary fairways and greens. Once construction is done it will be top notch.
Dishonest
We arrived for our tee time and were informed they had a tournament booked, so we had to play the Oaks 9 twice. When we asked why they took an 18 hole booking, they falsely blamed Golf Now for not telling us. Then on top of having to play the same holes twice, # 9 is under construction and we had to play a temp green. Then to add insult to injury, we weren’t able to use the range to warm up, because “it was far away and they had to take us there, but couldn’t because they were too busy.” We complained to who we thought was the starter, and he said “it’s not my fault”.
Uncaring, bush league, unprofessional.
Decent course but poor balue
You’re gonna play golf so you’ll have fun. But if you go near Oct 2024, there’s construction with heavy equipment off of almost every hole (lakes and creeks - can’t speak for the other). There’s no beverage cart whatsoever, and no snack or drink shack along the way of those aforementioned 18 holes. There are also several very short (<150 yards) among those 18.
Every other course I’ve played in San Antonio has either a circulating beverage cart, or a snack/drink shack halfway through, or both. None had construction like this one, and most were cheaper than this course (not to mention having a better variety of holes). Very hard to imagine I’ll be back any time soon given all that.
HEAVY Construction going on…
Played it 10/6/2024. Entire short game area is surround by fence. Multiple temporary greens and tee boxes. I wish I would’ve known this before booking.
Renovations & Future Layout Changes
Renovations are affecting a few holes on the courses. The scorecards are reflective of per-renovation layouts as is the GPS system in the carts. The 9th holes for Lakes and Creeks are swapped. Tournament scorecards reflect Creeks 1 and Creeks 9 (formerly Lakes 9) as being Par 3s instead of Par 4s because tee boxes are moved so far forward.
Oaks 2 - Tee box moved forward for a shortened Par 4
Oaks 9 - Temporary Green short of the water hazard. Very poor putting surface.
Creeks 1 - Tee boxes moved forward to about 150 yds out, playing as a par 3.
Creeks 9 (formerly Lakes 9) - Tee boxes moved forward to about 110 yds out, playing as a par 3.
Lakes 1 - Tee boxes moved forward for a shortened Par 4.
Lakes 9 (formerly Creeks 9) - Construction around the hole as the green is being moved to the other side of the water, but otherwise the hole is playing as a normal Par 5.
The driving range is limited to short irons only and golfers must take a shuttle cart to and from the range. Navigating the beginning and ending of Lakes and Creeks can be confusing due to all of the cart routes being different.
This course is currently going thru major reconstruction. Iron or less driving range. Lots of bulldozers.
Disappointed
Until they finish with the construction, this course shouldn’t be charging more than $50.
Next time put a Windmill next to the Oak Tree on Hole 3....and maybe offer a free round to anyone that can find their way around the course without a cart path map.
Re review
I may have been too harsh on the course
It’s a typical resort course
Not real good not real bad
Over priced
Played 18 of 27 holes
7 were ok
Construction distraction
Back-up beep beep beep truck noise
One day when finished should be nice
Under Construction
The practice facility and two holes on our round were under construction. Some of the greens were damaged as well.
The greens were so slow that it felt like they hadn’t been cut in two weeks.
Poor Value
Hyatt is putting in a new water park for the resort, and they are tearing up the golf course to do so. The regular driving range and practice green are gone. Holes are shortened/affected by the massive dig project. The greens are shaggy. There is no way that the rack rate $140 is appropriate for the golf course in this condition. I would not pay more than $50 for the course. Once the project is done, I will come back and play. For now, only a hot deal would lure me back.
Disappointed Experience
The course is under some considerable construction which I can totally understand for any course that is making improvements, but a number of issues with the staff and guest touch points here. The starter was not informative about the driving range location needing to be shuttled to. Just handed us balls and left us to try and figure it out driving around. There is no signage saying which direction each of the three courses are and with all the construction it’s hard to figure out. No beverage cart on a very hot Saturday. At the turn after not seeing a beverage cart for 9 holes we asked the starter and marshal separately about a beverage cart and they assured us it would make it to us on our back 9. It didn’t. Going 18 holes on $150 round without seeing a beverage cart or having proper service is a bit frustrating.
