Fantastic Course
This is one of my top two Chicagoland courses. It is absolutely fantastic. It has challenging holes with fantastic scenery and is always in great shape. Yesterday was no exception. Even after torrential downpours the previous day it was soft but great and I have nothing to complain about at all. If you are looking for a really challenging course that is always in great shape this your course!!
Best Golf Course in the North/Northwest Chicago Area
In my opinion Stonewall Orchard is the top golf course in the North/Northwest Chicago land area. The greens are fast and the fairways are in excellent condition. There is plenty of water, trees and natural hazards to grab your attention. Make no mistake this is a very challenging course. I love it and I think you will too.
Great layout and condition
Exceptional layout that challenges from start to finish. The course was in great shape and the staff was courteous and helpful. Will definitely go back! Great value.
Incredible Day of Golf
I live in the city and am so glad I made the drive to Stonewall Orchard. Everything was top-notch, here were the best parts: cart staff comes and picks you up in the parking lot, great practice area, course was immaculate, food was really good with good pricing, I saw a fox on the 8th hole, such a serene setting.
Ludicrous speed greens
Lightning fast greens, a majority of pins were in really difficult locations......awesome.
Bring your A game
Love how each hole is isolated from anything else. You don't have people playing in a fairway next to you. It is challenging, but fair. Keep it straight and choose your shots you'll be fine. Make poor choices and it will eat you up though.
U.S. Open sectional qualifier
The title says it all. Stonewall recently held a U.S. Open qualifier.
Great design, great condition and everything you would expect for a premier golf experience.
Highly recommended.
Course plays tough with forced carries but if you strike the ball good you will have fun here.
Great course
Stonewall is a great course with awesome drainage after rain. Greens are in excellent condition. Pace of play is a little slow on weekends. Nicest starter in the business.
Conditions
Greens were fast, smooth and firm. Fairways were firm. Range had very little grass but was still very nice given early season. Great range balls.
Nice Average at Best golf Course
The highlight of this course for me was seeing a coyote and white tails on the course, decent layout. Nothing special to what I get to play in Wisconsin. Looks on the web page super nice, but when you play here its not all that special. Average at best. So many divot makers all over this course, the course is not in great shape. And the putting greens here, are just sad. Very horrible. Like putting on concrete. and if you like to fly the greens like a do, plan on your ball taking so a huge hop and fly off these dry greens, and so many divot greens makers on every hole, wondered if they have a greens keeper at all. But so much water you think they could find some to water the concrete greens. No championship course I have played has these bad of shape greens. Makes this course not worth a second chance. Go play it you will see what I am talking about, definitely not worth there lowest price, thank god I got golf now price, I would never pay the ridiculis prices they ask for this PGA so called qualifier. That's funny to me. The layout is nice . I shot an 90 here from the tips, because of so many 3 putts. not very hard course if you can play golf management. Man those greens are so horrible, for such a course advertising how great jhey think they are. Aweful.. The local father and son team we played with said they get harder and faster in the summer. One and so done with this course.
Course is in fantastic shape!
This was my 3rd time playing at Stonewall this year and I had to post a review. Have played at all the courses that Golf Digest and Golf Week rank ahead of Stonewall in Illinois and they just don't compare. If you are looking for the best greens of any public golf course in Illinois, go to Stonewall Orchard. I live in the city and the drive was well worth the trip, only took about an hour. The three hole stretch of holes 4, 5 & 6 can be challenging but three of the best holes in the state.
Stonewall course overview
Stonewall is one of the best golfing values in Chicago area. The course conditions and greens are country club quality. Course difficulty is challenging but fair.
i personally like the fact the course is not surrounded by houses. Each hole is unique and private.
Other Chicago area courses of "like quality" are typically twice the cost of Stonewall.
Undiscovered Gem
This course has a nice balance in the variety of the difficulty of the holes. A good challenge for all skill levels as it also has a good variety of tees.
Always in good condition.
Stonewall Has It All
In addition to the great course conditions and greens that are purer than a lot of private club greens I've ever played is the wildlife roaming the course. Yesterday we had three Sand Hill Cranes checking me and my buddy out as we teed off on number 3! I've been playing Stonewall for years and always tell people that if they haven't played here yet, then they're missing one of the best public tracks in the state. Smooth, fast greens: check. 18 holes all different from one another: check. Pine trees, oak trees and wetlands: check. Challenging course: double check! Hopefully, there's still more golf left this year cause me and my buddies will be back. Snapped the pic of the par 3 13th during the round yesterday. Great hole!
Great course very odd staff.
On Golf Now we paid 80% of full fee even though the course was empty, very odd.
From the moment our group arrived the rangers were rushing us along. We arrived 45 minutes before our tee time, the rangers came over from the first tee and said "we need you guys ready to go when its your time". I looked over and for the next 20 minutes NO ONE tee'ed off from number one, very odd.
Why isn't Stonewall Orchard selling all these unused tee times a a better discounted rate? again very odd.
Probably 4 to 5 times we saw rangers on the course, why???? Heck there was nobody playing on a beautiful 65 degree day, are the rates too high?? Very odd.
I actually think there was more staff on duty than golfers on the course, again odd.
But again "what a truly beautiful course" loved the experience on the course, funny except when I ran into anybody that worked there.
Not worth your money or time
There were several reviews that boasted how great this course was, and it was far enough out of town that I figured it would not be crowded so I gave it a try while I was in town. HUGE mistake! First off the staff isn't rude, but they aren't nice either......I would say they were a bit aloof and cold. The starter was insistent that we start exactly on time. In order for this to happen he proceeded to tell us where water was located on the holes, bathrooms, and what the yardage markers meant....pretty much like neither of us had ever played golf. Needless to say the foursome in front of us was walking off the first green before we even teed off.
Okay, so not a huge deal.....I could get over that. But try playing a golf course where the greens have so many old divots your ball jumps and moves so bad you can't even get a true putt, all day!! What good are nice tee boxes and fairways if the greens are horrible?? Pair that with NO marshal at all on the course and you end up playing behind a foursome who have no one in front of them for a nice 4:45 minute round.....on a Tuesday afternoon!!!????!!!!
There is NO way I would play this course again. Instead of the starters who take their job WAY to serious camping out on the first tee they should drive around the course and monitor pace!
We appreciate the feedback but feel our greens are in phenomenal shape right now as we do not aerify in the fall. Our maintenance team repairs every ball mark in the morning prior to mowing the greens. If you had a tee time later in the afternoon then it would be the responsibility of the groups ahead of you to repair their ball marks on the green. Our starters are trained to be very thorough on the information they provide and our tee times are spaced 10 minutes apart for many reasons.
We apologize if you felt that your round took longer than anticipated but the weather that day was extremely nice for October. Before you give a golf course a 1 star rating (among others that you have rated) we suggest that you come in the golf shop so we can make every effort for you to leave a happy customer.
We pride ourselves in exceptional customer service and our primary goal is for a golfer to have a memorable experience.
Thank you for playing Stonewall Orchard Golf Club!
Definitely a must play
Loved the course, especially the 8th hole. Greens are quite a test. Only complaint is a bit pricey for the area.
Great course, great value
Cant ask for much better. Excellent layout, challenging greens. One of my favorite chicagoland courses, and i've played many of them!
I would play again!
The course received quite a bit of water the past few weeks...a bit soggy. The weather was not the greatest the day we played as well. Overall, a fun track and would love to play again with better weather and course condition. Looks as if they maintain the bulk of the course properly and green/cart fees seem below what the course offers, I would pay more to play agin.
I would recommend you play when you get a chance.
Slow slow slow
This is a wonderful course completely ruined by an unacceptable pace of play. We started as a twosome, joined the twosome in front of us (no problem with that) and then the twosome behind us joined us so we were six. We still were waiting on each shot. It was a Sunday so maybe better during the week but I will never go back on the weekend.
I'd be interested to know the high caliber courses you play which make stonewall orchard look and play below average. I love to play upper tier courses. As the other comment states "it's up to golfers to fix ball marks on greens and divots" if there were less lazy people with entitlement issues. More who were taught to "clean up after themselves" many of the slightly above average courses would be great courses. I would put stonewall in the latter category every time I played it though. I find it to be a challenging, well laid out as well as managed/maintained. Then again I've played it more than once.
David,
Thank you for your feedback regarding the course. We would just like to clarify a few things regarding the course conditions you experienced. In the Midwest, the average golf course will not turn on their irrigation system until early to mid-may due to overnight temperatures below freezing. With the high winds we experienced and lack of precipitation around the time you played, the course was experiencing really firm conditions. Since the time you have played we have turned the irrigation system on and filled nearly every divot on the course. Also, we noticed that you played at 12:40 pm on Saturday. It is the responsibility of the 100 golfers in front of you to make sure they repair their ball marks on the greens and replace/sand their divots. We look forward to seeing you again and thank you for playing Stonewall Orchard!
Sincerely,
General Manager
