Great course very odd staff.
On Golf Now we paid 80% of full fee even though the course was empty, very odd.
From the moment our group arrived the rangers were rushing us along. We arrived 45 minutes before our tee time, the rangers came over from the first tee and said "we need you guys ready to go when its your time". I looked over and for the next 20 minutes NO ONE tee'ed off from number one, very odd.
Why isn't Stonewall Orchard selling all these unused tee times a a better discounted rate? again very odd.
Probably 4 to 5 times we saw rangers on the course, why???? Heck there was nobody playing on a beautiful 65 degree day, are the rates too high?? Very odd.
I actually think there was more staff on duty than golfers on the course, again odd.
But again "what a truly beautiful course" loved the experience on the course, funny except when I ran into anybody that worked there.
Not worth your money or time
There were several reviews that boasted how great this course was, and it was far enough out of town that I figured it would not be crowded so I gave it a try while I was in town. HUGE mistake! First off the staff isn't rude, but they aren't nice either......I would say they were a bit aloof and cold. The starter was insistent that we start exactly on time. In order for this to happen he proceeded to tell us where water was located on the holes, bathrooms, and what the yardage markers meant....pretty much like neither of us had ever played golf. Needless to say the foursome in front of us was walking off the first green before we even teed off.
Okay, so not a huge deal.....I could get over that. But try playing a golf course where the greens have so many old divots your ball jumps and moves so bad you can't even get a true putt, all day!! What good are nice tee boxes and fairways if the greens are horrible?? Pair that with NO marshal at all on the course and you end up playing behind a foursome who have no one in front of them for a nice 4:45 minute round.....on a Tuesday afternoon!!!????!!!!
There is NO way I would play this course again. Instead of the starters who take their job WAY to serious camping out on the first tee they should drive around the course and monitor pace!
Definitely a must play
Loved the course, especially the 8th hole. Greens are quite a test. Only complaint is a bit pricey for the area.
Great course, great value
Cant ask for much better. Excellent layout, challenging greens. One of my favorite chicagoland courses, and i've played many of them!
I would play again!
The course received quite a bit of water the past few weeks...a bit soggy. The weather was not the greatest the day we played as well. Overall, a fun track and would love to play again with better weather and course condition. Looks as if they maintain the bulk of the course properly and green/cart fees seem below what the course offers, I would pay more to play agin.
I would recommend you play when you get a chance.
Slow slow slow
This is a wonderful course completely ruined by an unacceptable pace of play. We started as a twosome, joined the twosome in front of us (no problem with that) and then the twosome behind us joined us so we were six. We still were waiting on each shot. It was a Sunday so maybe better during the week but I will never go back on the weekend.
Good course - Very wet
Cart path only day, which caused for some slow play. Course in relatively good shape considering the amount of rain. Pretty good value.
Great Track
Great course. Some hard shots to commit to with wetlands blocking the view. Trust your numbers, hit quality shots, and you can post a good score.
Get a yardage book if you are playing for your first time.
First time at this course
Beautiful course for advanced golfers, tough with lots of sand and water,, fast pace of play, staff friendly, lots of drink carts, will go back
Good day bad day
Stonewall is a great course very difficult fairways are in great shape green are true. It would help if I hit the ball but still a great round
Absolute GEM & stratgic golfers course!!!
Very tricky & mentally challenging course here. Lots of visible obstacles that come in to play from the various t-box choices you make. I play white (-2 from tips @6K) which offers the best of both worlds. Not a grip it & rip it course. Course positioning here will be rewarded. Nice mix of brutal & fair holes so one's ego never gets too down. Like the folks say enjoy the wildlife & bring a few extra balls cause the tall grass is bountiful :-) Stopped for the fish fry afterwards w/the family & that was great too. Staff always friendly as I have now played here a few times. Not a course many of us will ace the first time, which means…I’LL BE BACK!
Great Course
Had not played in several years, still a great challenge, very serene setting and greens very quick. Seemed to have been sanded recent but still rolled true. Only issue pace of play, by back nine extreme wait every shot, every hole. Not sure reason but no where close to the 4-4:15 hours were expecting.
Good Course
Course was in great shape. Very enjoyable round. The only comment is to include a yardage book since there is no GPS on the carts. Several holes, have blind shots or sloping fairways (8 & 10) and no way to know unless you have course knowledge.
Great challenge, wonderful course
I've played this course a number of times. It's a bit on the pricey side for a public course. If it wasn't a players course I wouldn't recommend it. The pro shop staff is lacking. The gentleman at the counter isn't pleasant. I do appreciate getting off the 1st tee on time, however, the twosome I was placed with were allowed to go off early. This is a problem when you arrive at the tee from the driving range with a minute to spare. This would have been avoided if the pro shop attendant had been more timely with his check in AND hadn't allowed customers to jump in line. Basically, wasn't a good start. But where he lacked the ranger picked up. So all in all the experience got better. The course is in wonderful shape, the greens are fast but they bite. In my mind they are perfect.
Ridiculous Pace of Play - Unfriendly Staff
I have played Stonewall Orchard a couple of times and was fairly satisfied with the experience. However, the round that I played last Saturday was just horrid. First, the pace of play was so slow that you can compare this to a cheap county course. (I finished 12 holes after 3.5 hours and I finally had to walk off the course)
During the play, the beer cart girl stopped by a couple of times, and that lady had no etiquette at all - she would zoom by while I was putting.
After I walked off the course, i checked in with the front desk and asked if they have any rain check policy due to extreme circumstances like that day (3.5 hr for 12 holes) - what really ticked me off was the front desk person in charge said they did not have any rain check policy and for golf now customers, I will have to contact golf now about the raincheck. No apologies were offered. I just left the desk. Honestly, what I would have expected the front desk person to do was to at least apologize for what happened and call in the ranger to figure out why the pace of play was so slow. (if he has done that, I would have been OK and not leave any negative feedback here) . Passing the buck back to GolfNow is just an excuse and they should know better about this. As much as I like the course itself, it will be hard for me to want to go back there given the unfriendly staff...just a main turnoff
After my review, the pro shop Brian called me and left me an email explaining what happened and acknowledging the issue that day. That's all I needed to hear, that they actually care about their customers and want to make players happy. Thanks Brian!
Great course for the super rate
I have played this course in the past and have always found it challenging. The greens are very firm with spike marks and ball repair marks taking their toll on them as the day goes on, but as a rule they are fast and true. Play them early in the day if you can.The tees and fairways were in great shape and very firm as well. A little expensive, but we got a great rate $52 vs $84. This course is away from it all with houses only visible on one hole; no other developed proprieties border this course. Club house a little small, but completely adequate as is the practice range. Saw cart girl 5 times during round. Played in a little over 4 hours and that was with dropping a few extra balls. Played tips.
excellent
It was the first time play but this course is very challenging and very good condition. As the starter say if you hit straight and long it's enjoyable course. Don't forget to bring your extra balls
Gem
Despite being a healthy hour from downtown, it is still one of the best values out there. This course is in better condition than most private clubs.
A challenging treat
Played for the fist time in a few years. I always know my game is in for a test when I play here. The conditions were excellent, although the ground was wet, making for short drives but consistent approaches. They don't pick easy pin positions for the weekends, so make sure your putter is working well if you want to post a low score. Worth the challenge.
We appreciate the feedback but feel our greens are in phenomenal shape right now as we do not aerify in the fall. Our maintenance team repairs every ball mark in the morning prior to mowing the greens. If you had a tee time later in the afternoon then it would be the responsibility of the groups ahead of you to repair their ball marks on the green. Our starters are trained to be very thorough on the information they provide and our tee times are spaced 10 minutes apart for many reasons.
We apologize if you felt that your round took longer than anticipated but the weather that day was extremely nice for October. Before you give a golf course a 1 star rating (among others that you have rated) we suggest that you come in the golf shop so we can make every effort for you to leave a happy customer.
We pride ourselves in exceptional customer service and our primary goal is for a golfer to have a memorable experience.
Thank you for playing Stonewall Orchard Golf Club!
