The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Well manicured, fun course
This course is a well maintained, clean course. It isn’t too long but is challenging with numerous well placed sand bunkers andA challenging breeze on several holes. The greens are smooth, fast and in superb condition but true and challenging. A nice layout and a fun forgiving course to play.
A must play in Austin
Plenty of practice space for all aspects of your game. The course is fairly open and the whole course is in great shape. The greens are rolling very good and the sand is in good shape, and yes they have rakes. A fun track to play and if you are playing ok you can score low.
Slow and Bland
Decent course conditions. Pace of play was stupid slow. No Marshal always gets you slow play. Course is very bland, nothing stands out. The value to cost is simply not there. This is a one and done for me.
Fantastic course
Star Ranch is fantastic ! Great shape , always , very friendly staff . I play here twice a week. the greens are well taken care of , as is the whole course. I'll be there Thursday !
Beautiful, Open Course with Challenges for All Skill Levels
This was one of 3 courses I booked for a weekend Austin area golf trip with a friend. It was the 3rd and final round of our trip, and I actually ended up booking it as an alternative to another course in the area that I was unable to get a tee time for 7 days out. As luck would have it, this was a good thing. This course is very beautiful, the conditions were superb, and the pace was the best we had all weekend. It's wide open with an almost "links style" feel in some areas, but for the most part, still has that Texas Hill Country atmosphere. The wide open fairways and lush approaches provide plenty of scoring opportunities, but the greens are well guarded by bunkers and some very beautiful water features, so there is still plenty of challenge and playability for golfers of all skill levels. I highly recommend this course, and would definitely play it again in the future.
Always a great round at Star Ranch.
Course never disappoints. One of the best in the Austin area.
Great course
One of my favorite courses to play in the Austin area. Greens were sanded slighty. You can't go wrong playing here.
Best Shape in many many years
Course was absolutely pristine. Greens were perfect, course conditions were perfect, tee boxes were a little abused and sparse for some reason. Bunkers look like they have been added to, each one was perfect. Now if people would fix a ball mark for crying out loud!!! I played with 2 dudes that I never saw repair a mark they left, or someone else left. I probably fixed 100. No joke.
The housing and apartments RUIN this place. It’s super sad. Especially holes like 2, 8, 13. It’s just nuts the growth out there. Makes a guy sad and miss the fields and hay bails like down 16 fairway.
All in all, the course was just awesome. Kudos to the grounds crew!
Fun course to play
Nice course well manicured not very hard but fun to play. Nice white sand traps if you land in them which I did a few times :) favorite hole is #14
Course in good shape.
The round was 4 hours and 20 minutes.
Not good.
They let Fivesomes play here.
Thats my only complaint.
Course is Lush and well maintained.
The layout is basic.
It's a rather easy course
Very Nice Course
Travelled down from Mansfield, TX for the 2nd year in a row to play this course with my daughter. The course is in great shape. The pace of play was great, and the staff was very friendly. I was very thankful of how they made my daughter feel inclusive. She is in her 3rd year of playing. I think this is going to become an annual tradition.
Top of the line course
This have to be one of the best courses around Austin, well maintained and just a joy to play regardless of your score , I shot an 84 and that just added to the enjoyment. You got to play this course.
Nice course. Get a marshall so we can play it.
Started at 4:00. Ended in the dark at 9:05. We waited on every tee box. Never saw a marshall. No water on the course, and no cart girl on the back 9. It was hot, slow, and miserable. They said they had a tournament earlier in the day.
It was Father's Day so I expected it to be busy. Wish players would play ready golf since we are not on tour. Constantly waiting on group ahead of us watch a player hit then drive to the next ball so everyone can watch them hit.
