Country Club of Silver Springs Shores

About
Opened in 1969, the Country Club at Silver Springs Shores has been host to a variety of mini-tour and U.S. Open Section qualifying events. It is known for having some of the fastest and most severe greens in the area. Desmond Muirhead, a longtime associate of Jack Nicklaus, designed the golf course, giving it a different character on the front and back nines. The first half of the golf course is a traditional parkland layout that mixes native trees and wide-open meadows. The back nine is a true Florida-style golf course with water coming into play on six holes. Country Club at Silver Springs Shores finishes with one of its toughest water holes, a par 5 starts with an intimidating tee shot past a massive lake that wraps around the landing area. Many locals consider Silver Springs Shores to be one of the best public golf courses in the Ocala area.

It's better
Greens and tee boxes were decent. The rough would be OK if it didn't have so much watergrass mixed in. Plus, a lot of areas that weren't mowed. Most bunkers had water in them. My riding partner & me lost a couple of balls in the bunkers. The rake came apart while trying to sweep through the water for a ball. The fairways (always the issue there) was better, but patchey throughout. You almost always have to bump your ball for a decent hitting spot. Now we got a great deal through Golfnow ($17) for a 10:30 T-time. It's a fun course to play. A great and challenging layout. And for that price, I'd play it nearly everyday. I would not feel comfortable paying over $25-$28.. It's a shame. Like many courses in the Ocala. It's just not taken care, and could be a spectacular course if brought back to what is was back in the day.
Pgapge
The course has a great challenging layout. The greens were in very good shape and fun to putt on. Unfortunetly the rest of the course was full of ruts, bare spots and thin grass along most holes. The roughs hadn"t been worked in which a ball could easliy be lost due to tall grass and weeds. The cart paths were very old and in total shambles with broken or missing pieces of concrete and rocks and hard ruts throughout. One voided driving on them. Ball washers, trash containers and so called restrooms were outdated and not maintained.. The entire facility especially the cart paths require a major overhaul. Don't go out of your way to play there.
Don't go out of your way to play here
The greens were in excellent condition and fun to putt on. The fairways were in tough shape with many bare and thin areas and lacked decent fairways all around the course. The cartpaths are very old and in poor shape with nothing but ruts, broken concrete and bare spots making for a very uncomfortable ride. One tries to avoid driving on them.
The course has a very good layout but requires a lot of work and completely new cart paths.
Huge Letdown
Based on overall rating and the provided images- it looked as though we found a solid place to play a round. Unfortunately, the entire property looked in major disarray. Upon initial arrival, the parking lot was full of weeds and a mess. We only found the pro shop because of a small sign. The pro shop was also disappointing. Some clearance-looking shirts and shoes with nothing else. They didn’t even have a single golf ball you could buy.
We were pleased to not have to wait on anyone or be rushed as the last group to go out was over an hour prior to our arrival (8:30am).
The course itself was a mess. Conditions were terrible with the rough being so bad that you could easily lose your ball. Sand traps were considered an auto drop because of how bad they were, and the greens were hit or miss with tons of ball marks and no care in movement of the cup as the last one was still super apparent and not flattened completely. Lastly to mention- restrooms on the course… more like outhouses if they did exist at all. There were structures we came across with open doors, broken toilets filled with beer bottles, etc.
We will not be visiting this course again. Wish ownership luck, but wouldn’t be surprised if this property is closed within the next 1-3 years unless major improvements are made.
Bogus reviews
Theres no way this course deserves any recognition above a 3 star rating. Anybody that gave it more, dosent know what a decent golf course is.
A group of 4 ahead of us, drinking and screwing around. Severely slowed the pace of place, several groups backed uo. Drove over the greens and in sand traps. Called clubhouse to complain, was tild they did not have to staff to come out to address the problem.
Rainy Start
Greens were very nice. Some of the fairways had bare spots, but they are actively trying to kill out the quack grass.
The hotdog basket was a nice lunch for a fair price!
Poor conditions this time
My friend and I have played this course multiple times. I don't know what happened this time but it was not a great experience. Pace of play was crazy slow. There was a solo in front of us and we had to wait on him at every single hole and did not want us to play through. finally had to just skip a hole all together. They should really have someone keeping up with this.
Secondly the tee boxes and fairways particularly on the front 9 were in very bad shape. overgrown grass footing in tee boxes was very bad. The rough was insanely overgrown to the point you could not find your ball.
I have never seen this course like this ever. Please fix it like it use to be.
Course layout
This is an interesting layout with challenges on each hole. The rough was a little long in places, but overall in good shape. Saw quite bit of wildlife while playing. Great day.
Unfortunate Changes
I've played Country Club at Silver Springs Shores for many years. However, this is probably the last time I will play this course. The course is in very bad condition and its clear that its being allowed to decline. I can't recommend this course any longer.
Formerly Loved It
I have played this course at least 30 times over the last couple of years even though it is a 40 minute drive -- I love the layout and the greens are always good.
We arrived at 9:20 for our 10am tee time and the 3 of us hit some range balls and then some putts. At the 1st tee we were told there were still three groups ahead of us, plus a single who the starter said insisted he play alone. It's a Sunday morning with another twosome ahead of us and the starter let a single dictate he would play alone! NEVER seen anything like it! A competent starter ALWAYS pairs up a single on a busy day... but not here.
So after warming up we had to wait over a half hour to tee off. I was shocked at how the fairways had deteriorated. Despite the rains, there were wide, course brown weeds covering large portions of many fairways. The cart paths, always rough, were a joke and now, even the tee boxes were terrible. The only saving grace were the greens, but that was not enough to overcome everything else. Oh, and the bathrooms were filled with trash and toilets overflowing with urine and feces; couldn't even go inside. Very sad what has become of what is a great layout that I will NOT be coming back to.
