Surprisingly in mediocre condition
I was looking forward to playing Sand Hollow for the third time, and was unfortunately disappointed by some spotty conditioning. All the great things about Sand Hollow still apply - the cliffside holes on the back nine, the playable routing, the good food in the clubhouse - but the sight of construction below the patio between the ninth and 18th holes and the average conditions left me wanting the good old days when Sand Hollow stood among my favorite resort courses. I'll have to go back at some point and see if the conditioning issues were a one-time thing, or a trend.
ROUND OF MY LIFE
I Was staying in Las Vegas. First hurricane in 100 years was about to hit weather looked bad so i drove the 2 hrs to Utah to play Sand Hollow. It was well worth the trip great layout especially back 9. Outstanding views great conditions weather was perfect little overcast kept temps down.Shot best round of my life 76 thats after doubling number 2, hit drive into desert lol. The drive there was worth it driving through the desert mountains was awesome. Next time im in area i will be back. Not too far from Wolf Creek in Mesquite probably make a great weekend trip. Staff was friendly pro shop and clubhouse were good as well zero complaints
Back Nine is Insane
10 holes of normal links style golf. Then 5 holes of insanity. Then 3 holes of links style golf again. I have played this one 3 times over the past several years. It's a must play in the area. It's always in good shape but never in great shape. As good as the 5 holes are, I still feel it's a touch overrated to be in the top 100 public courses in the U.S. the area is beautiful. You can stay on site. Be sure to rent some RZRs and ride in the dunes next door or rent a boat and hang out on the reservoir next door. There is a reason this is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Lots to do for lots of different people.
Sand Hollow
After looking at pictures of this course online for three years, I finally got the chance to play it after a trip to nearby Zion. I was a bit concerned due to reading other reviews about pace of play and course conditions, but this course absolutely delivered even though it was low-40 temps with a light drizzle throughout.
The staff was friendly and incredibly accommodating. The range doesn't have any frills but it's grass and gets the job done as far as warming up. The carts were some of the nicest I've seen anywhere, with plush seats and terrific GPS mapping. So far, so good.
As far as the course, I played the Yellow tees (72.2/132) and, despite my concerns about the length, you get a little extra distance due to the altitude and the fairways and greens were more generous than expected. It's in terrific shape and has unbelievable red rock features on nearly every hole. The bunkers are red sand (very fun) and play a bit more like dirt than sand, but they're still playable. The front nine is highly enjoyable (although there are a few blind-ish shots) and holds your attention. Hole 10 is a great par 5 and then everything changes when you reach 11 green and realize you're adjacent to a cliff overlooking a giant canyon, which is the setting for the next several holes. Photos simply cannot do holes 11-15 justice; they are each spectacular in their own way. Take your time, breathe it in, and definitely don't miss left. 16-18 are a bit of an exhale after the exhilaration of 11-15, but those five are worth the price of admission alone.
This course is simply a must if you find yourself in Southern Utah - there's simply nothing like it.
Great Layout in Southern Utah
The Sand Hollow Championship course is a great test located near St George Utah. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and scenery that includes Zion National Park in the distance, Sand Hollow is a feast for the eyes while also being a test for the golf game.
The front nine moves over relatively flat land, with the exception of one and nine. It's a fun 9 holes but doesn't compare to what you see on the back nine. The back nine starts off with a massive par 5, and then moves to the holes along the canyon. Holes 11 through 15 are some of the most scenic you will see and are very challenging. In order to play well you have to summon the courage to hit shots with a canyon to your left.
The greens at Sand Hollow are very fair and not overly wild. The bunkers have a kept look that fits with the overall aesthetic of the property. The sand and the bunkers is more like clay, but it plays very nice and nobody in our group had significant issues with it.
If you are anywhere in the Vegas / St George area, I highly recommend finding a way to play Sand Hollow. You won't regret it..
Great layout. Fair conditions.
I played this course 6-7 years ago and was in fantastic condition. The conditions today were fair due to the fairways and tee boxes having bare spots throughout. The greens rolled true but we’re a little softer and slower than I would prefer for a course of this quality. Granted, it’s late august which may of contributed. I paid 65$ for an afternoon rate so you can’t complain for that rate, but I wouldn’t be happy if I paid 100-200$ which is charged during peak season. The layout is still great, with the back 9 being as good as you can ask for. The cliff holes are as good as advertised.
Absolutely fantastic... EXCEPT...
Stunningly beautiful layout & conditions !!! A+ for everything...EXCEPT...Larry & Paul of the cart staff... two elderly Irishmen, I think. Never in my 40+ years of playing golf have I encountered anyone like these jackals !!! Rude, disrespectful & uncaring?
NO !... hateful, miserable & nasty... intentionally & deliberately vicious. I almost thought I was being filmed for a prank show or was in the twilight zone. I was absolutely stunned. Chris, the Head Pro had to came out to separate them from me & my son. It is absolutely bizarre that these guys are employed by an otherwise prestigious course...or employed anywhere for that matter... especially in a position that involves contact with the guests. In speaking with Chris later, I get the idea that his hands are somehow tied... perhaps they are related to one of the owners or some other strange circumstance. If I ever return to the beautiful state of Utah, I am hoping that Larry & Paul are no longer there so I can again play the most beautiful course I have ever played.
Spectacular
Second time playing it and will return every time I am nearby. The first 11 holes are very good golf holes but you have no idea what's in store until you drop in on 11. The holes carved along, over and through the edges of the bluffs are an amazing experience. A group of us played all the top courses in the area as a scouting trip for a large tournament. Sand Hollow was by far the best in the area!
Epic back 9
1-11 is just another golf course then all heck breaks loose. Great use of the land to terrorize average golfers. The 16th is terrorizing even for mid to lower hcp. players. Do not miss the green. 17 and 18 kind of average too.
Fairways trying to recover from death, the tees are uneven and in bad shape. Greens were in great shape.
Not Worth the steep green fees at least as I played it today.. you should not price a course for a 5 hole stretch.
The course was in rough shape
The staff was wonderful, other than the snack bar. I thought the price was a little steep fir the conditions of the course. Lots of dead spots and new sod in the fairways. No cart girl. No real beverages to take out on the course. No food options for someone who is gluten free.
Great views, tough greens.
Great course. A few burned out fairways but expected for dead of summer. Large greens are easy to hit but surprisingly tricky to read. The views on the back nine are spectacular.
Majestic Views
First time playing this course. The majestic views on the back 9 were amazing!! Greens were in great shape, fairways could have been better. Definitely will come back!! Loved the layout and the challenge!!
Slow (1) & Slow (2)
(1) Teed off 15 minutes late, to begin with. Unfortunately, played in just a twosome, when everyone else was a foursome. 5:05 for the round. I HATE slow golf.
(2) The speed of the greens was SLOW. VERY SLOW. Not sure if the truth, but pro shop said the very next day was going to be their summer aerification.
On the bright side, it is a terrific layout, especially holes #13-15, as I recall. Very scenic, lots of red rock and clay everywhere. Never hit it into one of the 100+ bunkers on the course. Glad I didn't as they had red clay in them, no sand. While that made them visually appealing, my bet is that they would have been nigh on impossible to hit out of (quite deep, no sand).
Beautiful course, pace of play horrible
Stunning tougher course. Starter was very nice as well as Pro Shop desk. Unfortunately, they allowed what appeared people who just finished at the pool to play two groups in front of us and they not only weren’t dressed appropriately but were absolutely awful and didn’t seem to care. The foursome in front of us was frustrated as well. I called the pro shop to ask for someone to please talk with them since no ranger was to be found. I was greeted with a not so nice pr shop guy and then another guy came out and actually seemed upset with us!!
Not sure how you get the awards you get by allowing dress and awful play to go unnoticed. Disappointing
A MUST SEE!
This was an amazing course. back nine was a challenge and the views make it worth the fight to see what's on the next hole. Would defiantly play it again.
Awesome layout and amazing views
Beautiful course. In excellent condition. We played early and never had to wait. We played forward tees to enjoy the course. So we had some short Par 4s and Par 3s. Lots of fun and lots of sun. Bring your sunscreen.
Six hour round
The back nine is beautiful, but the round was six hours long, and no amount of beauty makes that acceptable. After we finished the first hole there were four groups waiting to tee off on number 2. Didn’t see a marshall until about number 14.
Memorable! A must play!
One of the most memorable courses I’ve ever played. I’ve played on some of the best courses all over the country and this one stands out.
There were two courses on my list to play while on my most recent golf trip. This course and another well known course in nearby Mesquite. This is by far the better course.
I left this course wanting to play it again. It was a great experience.
The course was in great condition and very playable for average golfers. Beautiful course start to finish!
Only negative-We teed off just before 8am and there was no beverage cart available till 10am. We were not told this prior to teeing off. That info would’ve been nice. Even when the cart became available we didn’t see the cart until around 11am. 14th hole I believe. Not too critical about a 10am start time for the cart though. Just thought a higher end course would offer this service throughout the whole day. No big deal though.
The food was pretty good. Our group enjoyed the meals we had.
