The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway sprawls across rolling hills blanketed with towering Douglas firs. Located just 30 minutes south of Tacoma, it is one of the area's hidden gems, offering not only a beautiful natural setting but also a challenging round. The layout features elevated greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds and wetlands that come into play on several holes. The greens are the most challenging element of the golf course. Some are small, which is tough enough to maneuver as it is, and most are framed by mounding. Sand bunkers also provide contrast against the smooth and fast-rolling greens. The Classic is a challenging course but still playable for all skill levels.

Hot Trash

A played this course for my first and last time.

The course was packed with 2-somes and 4-somes and took 5+ hours to play 18. There was a “marshall” on the course, but he was completely useless for managing the pace of play. The trashes were full and trash was all over around the tee box. I was too scared to attempt a bathroom break based on the poor management of everything else.

Find somewhere else to play and avoid this course!

The Classic Golf Club – Spanaway’s Hidden Gem

Nestled among towering evergreens in Spanaway, Washington, The Classic Golf Club remains one of the Puget Sound region’s best-kept secrets. While many nearby courses have recently raised their rates significantly, The Classic continues to offer affordable pricing without sacrificing the quality golfers expect from a premier course.

Unlike other courses that charge more and deliver less, The Classic maintains excellent green conditions and top-tier course maintenance year-round. Lush fairways, fast greens, and a peaceful natural setting make every round feel like a getaway. It’s a course that rewards precision and strategy while still being enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

Golfers from Tacoma, Puyallup, and Lakewood regularly choose The Classic over higher-priced alternatives like Chambers Bay and The Home Course—not just for the savings, but because the value is unmatched.

Whether you’re looking for a casual weekend round, a weekday escape, or a solid practice session, The Classic Golf Club continues to deliver a premium experience at a fair price. In a time when others are charging more and giving less, The Classic remains true to the game.

Interesting layout that tries too hard to be difficult.

This could be a fun layout with elevation changes, rolling hills and contoured greens. But unfortunately when we played it was underwater and we could only complete 9 holes due to the rain and unplayable conditions. But I was struck by the strategic overuse of trees that detracted from the experience. Why should trees dictate every shot on an otherwise great property, rather than allowing the natural terrain to allow for some imaginative shot making instead you're forced to focus on trees in play on most shots.

Fun course, pace of play slow...

We played 18 in 5 1/2 hours. At hole 6 one of our foursome left due to pace of play. At 15 we lost our 2nd player. But we still had to wait to start each hole. The Marshal was going to push a group a couple holes ahead of us at hole 11.

It was a nice course . Greens were consistent as far as speed of puts so that makes it more fun than courses that sometimes the ball rolls and sometimes doesn't.

Overall I enjoyed it. Golf now made it more affordable.

Great course

Love the challenge of the course. The greens are challenging to hit in regulation and get up and down when missed.

Nice course

Very walkable course. Challenging enough with lots of trees along each fairway, but the rough is low and easy to hit out of when needed. A few of the greens are right next to another, so it could be easy to go for the wrong one if you don't have a scorecard or GPS with hole details. It can also be difficult telling where the next hole is without the scorecard, so grab one even if you have GPS. The course was in excellent shape, and even though the pace of play was really slow, I'd still go back.

Needed cart girl!

Very great weather . Course in great condition but b a cart girl was needed. Too far to walk between 9 green and 10 tee to get something. 4 hours 30 minute pace was okay at best. Never saw a marshall.

Tough greens

Drove ~1.5 hours to get to the Classic on a Thursday.

Arrived early and they let us tee off, no problem.

Good thing too as several 4somes showed up after us. We played in less than 4 hours. That and the quality of the course made the almost 3 hour total drive time worth it. The greens were tough. My partner had a couple of birdies, but i had to resign myself to birdie opportunities missed.

I'll play again.

A Challenge worth price of admission

Great championship level course. It’s playing modified currently on all par 3s but there’s no need to make it harder than it is. Trees, bunkers, greens, and sometimes wind. This course is well protected. I’ll be honest with you if you like resort golf or easier courses this track isn’t really for you. There are better learning tracks. This is an intermediate/expert course with constant pressure if you play more than bogey golf regularly. Work on your swing and at your best come try this quiet beast on. Bring all of your shots and leave your excuses at home.
