About
The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway sprawls across rolling hills blanketed with towering Douglas firs. Located just 30 minutes south of Tacoma, it is one of the area's hidden gems, offering not only a beautiful natural setting but also a challenging round. The layout features elevated greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds and wetlands that come into play on several holes. The greens are the most challenging element of the golf course. Some are small, which is tough enough to maneuver as it is, and most are framed by mounding. Sand bunkers also provide contrast against the smooth and fast-rolling greens. The Classic is a challenging course but still playable for all skill levels.

Golfer Reviews
Dated and Dying
I had very fond memories of this course having played it many times, but all more than 20 years ago. Was in the area for a Friday night so decided to stay over and play here rather than pay the big bucks for Chambers Bay. Like I said, I recall liking the track and I remember it being a good value as well.
Well, it's not a good value anymore. And its not in good shape. And I swear they have not spent a dime on it since I played it 20 years ago. The clubhouse is a tiny little building from many years ago with small rooms, very small restrooms, and what you might expect from a run down Muni course - no towels, tp dispenser broken, etc. And the two bathroom houses out on the course - even worse shape.
The tee boxes are small and are not level. many have a mounding effect in the middle so that its hard to find a spot where the ball is level with your feet. And they were mostly chewed up, like there was not consistency or pattern to where they put the tee markers each day.
The groundskeeping was not great either. This course was once extremely pretty, with ponds and fountains and nice contrast from the edge of the fairway, the rough, and the natural. Now, the fairways are not bad, but the rough was very inconsistent, and the natural is sort of overtaking parts that were once manicured - especially around the water.
The greens were the best part of the course: large, irregular and with plenty of movement. And they were in reasonable shape.
But I found 3 or 4 bunkers during the round and I was in a footprint in 2 of those. And when I stood and looked around in the bunkers, I could not believe how many people had been in there and not raked. Who does that?!
I saved the worst for last. Of course there is no marshall - and this was a Saturday - but worse yet, they sent out a 5-some and a 6-some 3 groups ahead of us. And as you might imagine, it made for a 5 hour round. We had to pick up after 16 because we were going to be late getting to a dinner.
So... maybe they have really good twilight rates and no big groups, but, man, way to wreck what should have been an enjoyable Saturday round. Too much money for too little product. We will not be back.
Restroom - none for women???
Really? In 2018 it is unacceptable that there is a men’s bathroom with more than one stalll. (Per my husband)!but one a one stall family restroom for women. It wasn’t very welcoming.
Great Layout, HUGE GREENS!
My wife & I played The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway, WA last Saturday. We arrived well before our tee time and the friendly staff in the pro shop were able to get us off the tee within 45 minutes. The course is fairly hilly and fairways are tree lined. The greens are well bunkered, contoured and huge. There are parts of many greens you will not see from the fairway. The course was in pretty good condition overall though the roughs are a bit messy.
I would recommend this course to anyone. It's challenging without being too hard. A short straight hitter will have better luck here than a long hitter who sprays the ball and being able to navigate large undulating greens will help a lot too. Great value!
Thank you Harold LeMay
Is it too late for a classic auto museum to be built here? Probably.
Good condition
Overall good experience the greens were terrific the fairways firm, considering all of the rain we've had and great value looking forward to playing again soon
Tough day on nice course
Tough course with challenging large greens. I've always liked this course, but wish they would have monthly pay as you go memberships. With injuries and winter travel it will never make sense for me to sign a 12 month contract anywhere.
nice layout-horrible weather
I love the layout and difficult greens. I think getting rid of the trees was a good idea especially when the stumps get overgrown some. the greens are tricky and fast even in rainy winter weather. cant wait to play it in summer
Good course to challenge yourself
We played right after a frost delay so some of the greens were still frozen and some were really good but if it wasn't for the frost I assume the greens would have been in amazing shape. The course layout is perfect for anyone because you can play from the whites and play it easy or go back to the black or blues to really challenge yourself.
nice course to play for mod. skilled player.
Since the course has cleared out a bunch of trees, it makes it much more friendly to the avg. golfer.
It was a very nice place to spend the afternoon on a Friday. Not too crowded, weather was really good for Nov.11th--( tee shirt/shorts were plenty )
Fall golf
The sun thru the trees from a low angle. The greens rolling good for the rain the day before. Great time with three others.
The course is all that I remember but much better views for the tree removals.
Thanks for a great day,
Great value
Beautiful course. The grass off fairway is tough and make sure to use longer club.
The course is in great shape
I try to play the Classic at least 2-3 times a year. It is a bit of a drive, but seems to be worth it every time. I had not played the course since they removed a lot of trees, and I really like what they did. It is still a challenging course, but it is a little easier now. Not as intimidating off the tee-box. The clubhouse is still just a small trailer, but has everything you need. The carts are old and in need of repair. With that said I would recommend this course.
Still a challenging course
Played this course once before all the trees where cut. It was challenging then. I bit easier for a high handicapper now, but they should remove more of the stumps and add more grass. I would look much better. Greens in great shape and the pins in tough places.
Great course
Course has changed allot since the last time played. They remove 1,600 trees which has opened the course up allot. Green riled fast and true. Definitely a position golf course. Hit it in the wrong place and it plays tough. But enjoy playing there.
