Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Challenging track, requires well placed shots.
Tough course in fairly good shape - even for spring. Found the tee decks to be a little long - could be a spring thing as well. Lots of variety here with tough bunkers and undulating greens.
This course has great features
Good course! Would play again. Good course. Would play again.
Ponds were overflowing
Tough narrow course with water on almost every hole. Spring water levels were high and ponds were overflowing which made the course even narrower than intended.
Early Season
Couse condition was inconsistent.. most fairways were good to very good, most greens were below average to average. Greens were very slow, bumpy and very sandy.. need care and work. Course layout was nice .. would play again later to see if course conditions improve to justify the price.
Fun course
Little short from the blue tees, will have to move back next time to use driver on more holes.
Good Spring Golf
This was a round of necessity after a long winter and it didn't disappoint. Not much I can say as it is so early on the year, but despite that the curse was in pretty good shape. It obviously drains well and there were very few soggy spots in the fairways. I was very happy for mid-April gold and look forward to returning under ideal conditions.
Nice course, worth playing
Only complaint was the pace of play, extremely slow, waited on every tee, no marshal to push things along. Many of the greens were irritated, which I think should have been noted before we played. Beautiful course, really challenging.
Greens do need better care.
Some of the greens were not as playable as it should be. Many ball marks and no one seems to rake the bunkers, sigh!
Longest round this year
Wouldn't pay the normal rate this golf course charges - there's just too many courses, in this area, that are of equal quality, at a more reasonable rate.
If we knew the discounted rate that we paid was going to result in a line-up at every hole, we would have booked elsewhere.
Poor course management!
Did't like the conditions of the gree
The course is very challenging and some what maintained but I didn't like all the ball marks not repaired on the greens.I mush have fixed between six and eight ball mark on every green before i could putt.I'm not putting your course or your maintenance people down.I guess it's because i have never seen greens with that many ball marks not repair.(some people just don't have any respect for the courses they play)
good track, somewhat expensive
will test you for all 18 holes, not the easiest to match your personal par. average value as green fee is rather high compared to other courses in the area.
the course has a good blend of challenging holes.
Royal Ontario is easy to get to from anywhere in the GTA. The fairways are in great shape and the greens are fast and roll true. There are some challenging holes as well as some that let you breathe easy. The 18th hole is the only unfair hole for most amateurs as the fairway at the 150 marker is a very narrow landing area but better players can lay up past that point.
Beautiful Breeze
An early Wednesday tee time was a great choice. Course was in good shape considering the whole summer of play it had just been through. Only interference was the maintenance staff on a few holes, as they seemed to be playing catch-up at 9am. They did politely move out of the way, but it was more the number of times they appeared and had to get out of the way. Now, either that's a short-staffing issue, or the course is trying to cram more tee-times in, not giving maintenance enough time, with whatever budget they've been given, to prepare the course for the day. The course was relatively quiet, although I imagine that sort of thinking could lead to a slower pace of play. Had a great time thanks to the relatively few booked tee times! Loved that gentle breeze that fools club selection and target line on shots that fly above the tree line on #11-16. Nice added challenge.
This is not Lionhead...
I have now had the pleasure of playing all of Ted Baker's Kaneff courses. The course I played most recently was Royal Ontario. Upon check in I soon realized I was not given the same greeting as my fellow(non-golfnow) patrons. In fact, I realized during my round that I was over charged for a small bucket of balls prior to my tee off. Regarding the course layout and condition. The layout does offer the opportunity to use all the clubs in ones bag. On the down side, there are more then a few "gimmicky" hole layouts. I assume because of property restrictions. The greens ran fast, but the greens were butchered by non-repaired ball marks. That seems to be a reoccurring feature of the Kaneff chain. Bunkers were in good condition. Tee boxes were in disrepair. Finding flat footing to tee up was impossible. The pace of play was slow. We teed off before 8a.m. and finished @ 1p.m. The fairways were in nice shape. I CANNOT RECOMMEND PAYING FULL $ FOR THIS COURSE! We played it on a hot deal. That would be the way to go. There are many, many courses in and around this course that offer a better value/experience for the dollar. Not a premium course. Play either of the Lionhead courses to better assess Ted Baker and his design philosophy. Money better spent. In my opinion.
Course in good condition. Value for money when booked through golfnow.com. Golfers need to check egos and play proper tees for their game.
Pace of play too slow. Groups ahead of us playing blues & blacks & shanking it all over the place. My group plays the whites or whatever is around 6,000 yds. My take is that 90% of golfers should be playing 6,000 yds or less. Leave the longer tees to the really good players (which I hope to be one day)!
Beautiful course; staff was friendly; marshal was very rude
Overall we had a very nice experience. Course was very well maintained. Marshal was very rude; our pace of play was a little slow over the first couple of holes due to our inexperience; groups behind us blocking our fairways; having to wait for them to clear the fairway for us to tee off. We picked up the pace as requested by the marshal; however as we got a full hole ahead of the group behind us the marshal kept on us as if we were holding people up in their game. He would sit and watch us tee off consistently; which as a player new to the game (6 rounds under my belt) made me uncomfortable. Additionally the marshal told me that we should be teeing up at the white (we used blue); I found the manner in which he spoke was not acceptable!!
Greens require alot of work.
Greens require work Beer girl never around other golfers fail to replace their divots.
Good.
The golf course is well layed out and provides enough challenge from the blue tee. The greens have not been maintained and was very bumpy and uneven. Good patio and restaurant amenity.
The course sets up well, is a challenge and is in excellent condition.
I have played this course 3 times this summer, and it is always a great challenge to our round. The course is always in excellent condition, and the greens are quick, but fair. It is always a good day on this course, and the layout is fun.
Great course but needs some TLC
I've played this course for a number of years. Every year it seems that the condition gets worse. (ie greens have ball marks that haven't been repaired, tee decks are in rough shape and uneven, etc). Its really too bad because I love the layout, and its a good challenge for all. My favourite holes being the 9th and 18th. I do hope that management starts putting money back into making this the course the way it used to be a number of years ago. It used to be worth the high green fees it charges these days not so much these days.
