Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Very difficult course but fun to play. Would help if you knew the course before playing it.
I enjoyed playing the course and for the most part played very well but I didn't know the course so I didn't know where to hit to. Many times I hit a straight drive and I was in trouble. From the tee box I really had no idea where to hit to. But now that I have played the course, I can't wait to play again.
Nice layout, generally good conditions
This course has a nice layout with a good variety of holes. I found the conditioning to be generally pretty good, however the greens were inconsistent in speed and had a relatively high number of unrepaired ball marks. There were quite a few groundskeepers on course (I played early AM), so they are making an attempt to keep the maintenance up. Would play again for the Golfnow rate (with 25% discount code), would not be very happy if I paid rack rate ($~115!!).
This course used to be great. I think they have lost their focus.
I have played this course many times over the past years and I enjoyed everything about it. This year I was very surprised at the lack of detail. The greeting at the bag drop area was very disorganized and the staff at the Pro Shop were not very helpful or interested in assisting me. They were having a tournament and they weren't sure where my foursome was starting from. Usually you have to fill in a form for the cart and hand it in to the Starter however there was no starter so no form was filled out. The fairways were in poor shape with divots everywhere that were not attended to.The greens were also in disrepair with multiple ball marks not repaired on most green, scuff marks from spiked shoes and patched areas of grass on 4 of the greens. The attention to detail was obviously lacking. The refreshment cart came around twice on the back 9 and only once on the 8th hole on the front nine. I wanted to pass on my observations to the Staff after the round however the 3 gentlemen at the Pro shop were not interested in listening to my opinion about the problems and chalked up the conditions to heavy rain. We haven't had heavy rain this summer and other courses in the same area are in great shape. There is allot of room for improvement.
Needs attention to details
It's a challenging course at a 142 slope from the gold tees. I found the maintenance to be poor....sight lines from the tee were blocked by overgrown vegetation. These are not trees but weed like vegetation. The course is generally flat and the sight lines off the tee were not very good. It was the first time we have played the course so it was particularly challenging to know where to hit the ball. It's just not a well designed course and poor value for money. Our foursome were all single digit caps and it was a death march waiting for the groups ahead.......there are much better options out there.
Very nice course.
Great value for what I paid. Would not pay full price. Very nice course.
Some very challenging holes. Putting is at a premium.
Lovely property...Mix of very challenging to moderately challenging holes. Every tee shot demands your attention because (unfortunately) there isnt one level tee box on the course. Par 5's to end each nine are some of the hardest holes on the course but too many very short Par 4's and Par 3 with almost unfair greens to compensate for lack of length to be classified as an elite course.
This course absolutely requires a great deal of maintenance attention during the month of August.
This course has great potential to be outstanding. Love the challenging design. Unfortunately when we played this course, sand traps were as hard as rock or under repair. More importantly, the greens were marred with days of un-repaired ball marks.
Very hard course, close to Toronto
Played first thing in the morning. Course was wet with dew and we got around in about 3 hours. Lost many balls but had lots of fun. Bring your A-game for sure and don't get greedy. Course was in tip-top shape.
Good value for $50 (Red hot deal)
We played Tuesday morning on a $45 + taxes Red hot deal rate. The pace of play was great.
But the staff didn't smile at all and the course was not manicured well. At the Red Hot deal rate I'd play this course many times.
But at a regular price, I would not recommend this course
You'll love this course even if it doesn't love you back
Staff are friendly and courteous. The course was in excellent condition. It has six tee decks for all skill levels. I would classify this as a difficult but fair course. You are punished if you miss the fairway but can score if you get in the right position. Bring a lot of extra golf balls.
One criticism is that the pace of play was slow despite not being fully booked. I would like to see more marshalls who enforce better pace of play as the groups ahead of us were easily a hole apart from each other causing our group to wait on every hole we played.
Bring your love for golf, for the challenges that good courses offer and your intelligent club selection to Royal Ontario and enjoy the super layout.
Playing from the blue tees in order to test our games, my golfing partner and I were indeed put to the test. That is the point isn't it? To face the challenge of great holes, amid great scenery. The day was a rewarding one.
Good course,some tuff holes,well maintained
Course in good condition
Staff friendly
Marshalling poor
1 st group off slow held up whole course
Complained to Marshall, claimed he spoke to them
Did not improve situation
2 nd group jumped ahead
We ended up playing in just over 4.5 hours
Overpriced. Poor pace of play
Expensive vs. other courses. Poor pace of play - did not see a marshal the entire day, yet the course was backed up.
A challenging course with enough variety, even for the above average golfer.
It was a hot and humid day when our foursome played Royal Ontario for the first time. We followed a tournament, so things were a bit slow and the greens were somewhat chewed up. Nevertheless, it is an interesting course with many challenging holes. If you are not straight off your drives, trouble abounds.
Lovely course. Not long, but narrow fairways make it a challenge.
Enjoyed the course. Most drives are pretty tight so hitting the ball straight is a definite advantage! Tees weren't in great condition, but otherwise the course was well maintained. Some laying-up required off the tee, which makes it difficult the first time you play. We played the blue tees, but gold was probably a better option. Would definitely play again.
Maintenance crew on every hole with a 7:04 am tee time! Loud & gas fumes.
This is the 2nd time I have played this course. The poor practice of the greenskeeper for this track is that they have their crew cutting grass and grooming bunkers the entire morning of our round. We had the lawnmowers at every hole throughout the course. A Marshall agreed with my observation but said it was out of his hands. I'm sure business is just fine for Royal Ontario but we won't be going back there again. On top of that their lawn mowers would back fire on occassion when you're putting or teeing off which was just ridiculous. The cut grass was even left on some fairways which was just incredible. The first time I played here many years ago, they were also spraying a liquid foam on the fairways in front of us where we were teeing off which was the first and only time I've ever experienced this on a course.
Tight course, tough greens, beautiful setting and very well maintained.
It was a great day and the course was in excellent condition despite the heavy rains during the week. Enjoyed playing the course and plan to play again!
In the heart of nature, to be discovered
We have discovered a little jewel and even though the course suffered from the terrible rains it recovered pretty well, most probably due to the very good quality of the greenkeeping team. The design allows you to stroll in nature and to fight with the hole you are playing.
The most beautiful holes are the holes nr 9 and 18, not only do they offer a nice view back on the clubhouse they are pretty challenging.
Not Bad
!st time playing here nice large greens lots of water a little over priced I think but that's GTA pricing.
Challenging but a lot of fun
The course makes you think hard about your second shot. It's about making the smart decision rather than powering towards the green. Considering the fact that there is water on 17 of the 18 holes, a few lost balls will help emphasize that. A strong iron game would be good for this course.
Only one issue with the maintenance guys running the mower right next to one of the tee-boxes. But overall, love playing this course.
